@@aaronjgeorge Are you doing a repaste or something else? For which laptop model? My comment is that you dont need to remove the display and all the cables to get the the fans. I am taling mostly about the WIFI antennas and ther touting. Yes you need to disconnect the cables from the motherboard and wifi card

I'm thinking of repasting my P51 too. Did it make great changes in the temperature and cooler speed?

@@CasherPD well my P51 wouldn't even boot before I repasted, so the fact that it now boots is a plus! I haven't unthrottled it b/c I think it's at the end of it's life and don't need the turbo for my activities. Wish I could give more info. Sorry.

Did it now, it was super-easy. (I'm now missing one screw(?!!)). Before doing it, the system was thermal throttling ALL the time. Now it only power throttles, like it should (sadly). I also removed the mesh, it's just a sticker with holes punched in it, loosened it in a corner and ripped it off. Whole process took less than an hour.

@@b1n0ry3Oh thermals ok. CPU hits 3.7 - 3.9 on high loads, also I'm staying in India where the options are not soo great, so I plan to wait and catch the 970 Evo on a sale or something. Import duties make everything cost double here.

It is metal, some magnesium alloy that's quite strong but light.

Why?

I honestly think it's just a poor cooling solution for the cpu and gpu. If you think about it you have a 75W GPU and a 45W CPU trying to be cooled (at full load). That's 120W that needs to be dissipated. What lenovo has in there now is trying it's hardest to keep things cool but really isn't properly spec'd. If you check out kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsqEptWSktuwcn0.html. Linus has a tear down of the MSI GS65 which has (IMO) a much more capable cooling system. You can clearly see just how it's engineered to be able to pull more heat away from the cpu and gpu. I'd love to get in a WS65 from MSI and put it head to head with my P52. That would be a good showdown.

@@b1n0ry3 Hi, thanks for sharing the video from Linus! I think the liquid metal is the way to go. I am too chicken to try that because it is a new machine, and quite expensive. However, there has to be a way to safely apply the compound. I will practice the application on a glass surface to see how it spreads. Also, while the machine is open I want to see if it's possible to safely create a few ventilation openings by cutting the plastic avoiding contact with any metal surface. I know the lower grids are conductive. We will see.

The ram is rated for 2666Mhz, but it only runs at 2400Mhz. No overclocking of the ram is possible but I doubt you'll notice much performance. I use my P52 for video editing and CAD work so it's more than capable.

I don't use the trackpad that much, but I'll check tonight and see if I notice anything funky. I know you can replace your stock drivers with windows precision drivers to improve the responsiveness. Maybe a good video idea huh?!

I've noticed Lenovo has a bad habit of randomly changing hardware options on many of their models... Very frustrating!

I had thought about it. Gallium, which is the main component of conductonaut, while it's reaction with copper is very slow, there still is electron transference. This can be seen from the silver plating that occurs over time. I haven't found anyone that has data on the effects of these conductonaut over a period of 2-3 years yet. Maybe once the laptop isn't under warranty anymore, and I get get a replacement thermal solution on 3rd party sites, I"ll give it a try.

@@b1n0ry3 I used liquid metal "Coollaboratory Liquid Pro" back in 2011 on my laptop and PC. Worked like a charm. "Coollaboratory Liquid Pro" has ONLY 32.6W/​mK. But after 3-4 years, cooling on laptop got worse. I never repasted it because I got a new laptop but I think nothing severe happened. After 1 year I opened my laptop and saw, that the liquid dried out but I didnt bother to repaste because cooling was still fine. I think liquid metal have a limited durability of 18-24 months and then require repasting. After watching your video, I dont know if I want to disassemble my P72 every (second) year. Too much can go wrong. Did you archieve undervolting your GPU? If yes, how? I undervolted and overclocked my i7-8850h. I reached 1304 points in Cinebench R15.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Sadly I am all too familiar with the HMM for the P51 and unfortunately I need more hand holding then the manual provides. Something like your video specifically for the P51 is what I am looking for. I have searched the Earth for one : ) See the links in the following two posts. In the first link the discussion about the P51 occurs half way down. I suppose I could look at the HMM for the P51 and the P52 and see what if any differences I can discern. Thanks again.

6 months using mine, they fixed the mouse latency with the update...

You know... I have randomly gotten some BSOD's. I think Kernel Heap Corruption was it. Could never pinpoint what caused them. Haven't had any in the last month or so.

Thanks for the reply, @@b1n0ry3. I installed the latest version of the Intel Driver & Support Utility and it identified a few drivers that were out of date that Lenovo Vantage didn't find. I was blocked from updating WiFi or Display drivers but updated the rest and I haven't had a crash in a week. I'm hopeful that solves the issue and maybe this helps someone else.

Only reball. I believe the last lenovo thinpads that's had socketable cpu's was the T430, T530 and W530's.

@@b1n0ry3 Thanks a ton! I really appreciate it. It seems that the fan is unavailable for purchase anywhere and I just have to take the system to a repair location for them to replace the entire thermal assembly. Hopefully it's covered by the warranty.

The ram is upgradable, so you could just get 8GB stock and upgrade later. There are a total of 4 ram slots. Two under the keyboard, and two under the access panel on the bottom of the laptop. Honestly the price of ram from lenovo compared to ebay or newegg is very close!

I agree with Jon -- the Lenovo RAM was priced about the same as everywhere else so I upgraded the RAM. I did however, go with the cheapest storage option (HDD) and then later added a good SSD.

@@b1n0ry3 thank you for your response. I have done some cross-referencing since I asked this and determined that the screens ARE interchangeable between the P50 and the P51 (Same FRU's) but as you say NOT the P52 which has a different set of FRU's

​@@Didymusartist SSD should be OK in the 2.5" slot. Do you have the Stock HDD in the 2.5" slot? Is it the boot disk? If so, you'll have to clone the disk to the new SSD you want to use before swapping the drive. Although you would be better served to clone to one of the NVMe SSD and make that the boot disk. That's my setup: 2 NVMe SSDs but I left the stock 1TB HDD as "cold" storage for rarely accessed data.

There is some lag when writing. I couldn't tell you how many ms though. I'm just using my finger not a pen. Overall tap response though you can't tell any lag.

@@ElectronicMarine could be, yes. Although mine is never used on sofas, beds, etc. It's either my own desk, or office desk. Besides, i usually open up my laptops at least once a year, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Update I undervolted my Xeon by . 090 and it's stable and also set my battery mode to better battery and set my bios power settings to balanced from performance and I'm getting way better temps, in the 70's to low 90' rarely and pretty much not thermal throttling until my cpu decides to go above 4.1 then it'll get 97 and throttle down but it also rarely happens so safe to say I'm good now.

Are you asking can you use your 135w charger instead of 170w? You can use the 135w charger on your P52 but you may experience decreased performance under full CPU and GPU load. It may also prevent your battery from charging under heavy usage.

b1n0ry I work from home, I use 170w charger.When I go outside I bring 135w charger to my mobile device.Outside, I just use simple work like ofice ... affect the hardware of the machine or not but the performance is not too important

I don't really remember! But I know I used a lot of Gelid GC-Extreme around this time period. Now I just use MX-5.

They don't stick no. You have to reopen the Intel extreme tuning utility and re-apply the undervolt unfortunately.

@@b1n0ry3 Thanks for the response. Also, since you have the 4K touch, can you check if the display is 10-bit? You can check for this under Nvidia Control Panel -> Change resolution -> Output Color Depth, OR you can open up Photoshop, hit CTRL-K and look under Performance -> Advanced Graphics Processor Settings, and see if you can check 30-bit display. @@johntruongpictures No 10bit on the P52 :( If I remember only the P72 has a 10bit 4k display, but don't quote me on that.

@@b1n0ry3 thank you for checking! The P72 is advertised as having a 10-bit, but many owners have reported it is only 8-bit, even looking up the panel part number from AUO confirming that. Very shady.

Advances in tech has progressed so quickly it might not be a bad idea. I could probably sell mine for about half of what I paid, but I don't require a lot of power out of my portables so I might end up just keeping it. Battery life though... more to be desired...
