Something just dawned on me as I was watching some videos and experimenting with my own reed blocks. Let me know if I'm mistaken, Rich... but it appears that the reeds vibrate as air passes over the reed on it's way INTO the plate. I had no idea that was the case. I mistakenly thought the reeds vibrated as the air passed OUTWARD, away from the plate. If I've got this correct, then the valves open to allow air to escape as it passes first over the reed, into the plate, then out the valve. In reverse flow, the valve seals off 1/2 of the plate which directs the air to the sibling reed. If that is the case, that explains why too low of a reed height would choke and too great of a gap would rob air from the bellows as it tries to get the reed vibrating. I apologize for rambling on, but would it be the case that "tired valves" would make the instrument much harder to play, demanding huge quantities of air from the bellows because it's leaking past the bad valves?

Hi Mark If you take one of your reedblocks and choose a hole and then alternately suck and blow through the hole you will see that when you blow , the outer valve lifts and allows your breath to pass out of the chamber at the same time as wobbling the reed slightly to hopefully make a sound - that breath going through the chamber will at the same time force the valve on the inside of the chamber flat against the slot thus preventing its reed sounding . If the valve isn't working closing properly then it will lessen the amount of air going to the reed that you want to sound - making it significantly quieter . One interesting thing to mention is that when you push the bellows closed the air is being drawn out of the accordion thus playing the reed that you could sound by sucking on the reed block and when you open the bellows you will play the reed you could sound by blowing on the reed block . A valve in bad shape could make the note quieter as not all of the air is getting to the desired reed- but you also hear bad valves - when you play a note you may hear some orrible accompanying noises ! Hope this helps 😃

@@richedwards9646 Good morning, Rich 🙂and Yes (!) that was super helpful. I believe I understand the direction of airflow now that you've explained it. If I've comprehended this correctly, you could initially analyse a problem valve or reed just by knowing what you've explained... you'd have its pitch and location (inner v. outer) determined? (edit - meaning this could be determined just by playing the instrument) Accordions, what fascinating instruments.

@@markjones7063 hi Mark Yes if you have a problem note - you can identify it on the reed block by its pitch and whether it is a push or pull on the bellows - a push on the bellows is an outside reed , a pull on the bellows is an inside reed 😄

@@richedwards9646 Good afternoon, Rich 🙂 Bumped into a bass mechanism problem featured in kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9F9YJuK3Mq5cok.html and would be curious as to your thoughts on a solution. I tagged you in the comments but I'm not sure it's working.

Hello Krzysztof - I use Dirks Chromatic Tuner program that I downloaded onto my laptop and I plug in a Zoom microphobe for accuracy . Cheers Rich
