Accordion repair- improving compression by servicing the air release mechanism

I could hear air rushing into the accordion, and was pretty sure it was coming from the air release mechanism. In this video I take this mechanism out, and do some work on it,to make it work better...

I opened my accordion for the first time a few weeks ago to fix a stuck button, but i messed up the air release in the process. I appreciate your video as i prepare to go in again and hopefully fix my mistake

Sir- - Some how - I am not convinced with the idea of removing the 'entire' mechanism assembly of the air button/valve. Accordions are my 'hobby' and I have often 'fixed' this problem (whenever occurred or found) by simply putting thumb pressure gently on the pallet at the point it is showing a little up (as shown in the video) and the job is done ! Sometime, if the spring side gets rusted, WD-40 is sprayed which removes the rust instantly, wipe off gently the extra liquid on the pallet - and you are done . No need to take out the entire mechanism unless absolutely essential. In the instant case - I guess it could be done by simply 'adjusting' the angle of the pallet with a nose plier ? Always enjoy your videos and they are always presented so well however the focus on your camera never seems to behave. We get a very crisp image of Wallace and of the bag of pencils on your wall but the air button is a blur.

Ah sorry - i think the camera was on manual focus or something- I will try and do better next time !!

I do not understand why you put ekstra Wright on the Air valves. And extra leather or felt doesnt helt either. Only adjusting the Angeles of the valve helt.

@@jorgenkornerup having extra leather gives more cushioning - it means that the pallet is more likely to settle with as good a seal as possible The extra weight is probably a silly idea but it seemed good at the time, but it's not doing any harm so I will probably leave it on...

@@richedwards9646 Extra leather makes the problem worse. Extra weight on the valve has absolutely no effect. Spring tension is not the issue here. Jørgen is right: the correct and simplest solution is to adjust the angle of the valve. . Takes a couple of seconds.

@@diatonix2 I have to disagree The spring tension is important as a weak spring tension will mean that the leather isn't being slightly compressed against the wood. Have a decent thickness of soft leather means that as the pallet is compressed against the wood , it is much more likely that any tiny gaps which potentially could cause a leak are sealed. I think the extra weight was a bit daft - but it's not doing any harm!
