How to Remove Mill Scale From Steel (Fast and Easy)

In this video I share with you a super easy way to remove mill scale off of your steel. This is the easiest way that I've found to do this with common hand tools. The secret is the silicone carbide abrasive. It cuts mill scale where aluminum oxide smears it around. Princess Auto/Harbour Freight offer a really cheap one in 5 packs that go on sale every now and then. Can’t beat the price and they seem to do pretty good,even when compared to the expensive 3m discs.

Yes! My material has some medium rust...it just glares over and has the really dark color. I have to really push hard to get it to shiny. Same with mill scale. I ordered some blue disks. Will.see how they work.

I've used the strip discs as well, primarily on aluminum; much better than a flap disc for blending/smoothing. Greg (@makingmistakeswithgreg) also did a comparison of different grinding discs for removing mill scale.....but unfortunately don't think he included the strip discs- There are purpose built discs that I would also like to try.

Very nice but feel you should have mentioned to newbie grinders an welders that if you use any method on aluminum you should keep that disc dedicated dedicated to only alum.otherwise you introduce contaminates into ur weld piece and could be difficult to weld properly.snooky pa.😊😊

Do you wipe the metal down with anything after you clean the mill scale off. Before you weld?

Acetone or lacquer thinner works well, or anything that evaporates fast. Brake clean works also just make sure its non chlorinated and make sure it totally evaporated before you strike an arc lol. Or BOOM

On them stripper disc might try a bar of soap on them to help clean them

Holy crap! I'm doing something seriously wrong! Would take me 2 minutes to clean that much with flapper! A new dewalt one 40 grit! Maybe my grinder is slow or something. How many RPMs is yours? I'm gonna try the purple disks. You clean way faster than I am.

Ill have to check, not sure why but those purple disc cut great and doesn't remove much material. I tried the flapper wheels and they'll just take the soft stuff off.

As a welder i can not take time to clean clean steel it would take to much time and slow down productivity

The first five minutes and fifty sec is unhelpful and repetitive time wasting waffle. Then he gets the flap disc going and starts to do something. Edit: The millscale grinding demo is good, but it is only about 2 minutes long. A script or at least paced bullet points would greatly improve watchability. Ooooh… 11:58 “Aluminium!” Nice to hear.
