@@quinnsinclair7028 Nah 13's screwdriver looks like an alien dildo. 10's looks like a vibrator. 11's looks like a rectal torture device. 12's screwdriver is the only one that looks like it can actually screw things on, although still not the best looking. You're also probably right that 12's was probably made just so they can sell toys that's why it was so shortlived.

The 5th Doctor's sonic WASN'T updated to give it a white ring. The paint slowly flaked off of that particular ring of the prop - you can watch it progressively coming off during the course of it's usage - particularly in Tom's later series, but even as early as Jon Pertwee's "Monster of Peladon". It did get a repaint during Tom's last season, but the ring was already either in full white condition, or close to it.

I liked the sunglasses, but I think they should have been paired with a handheld thing and the glasses were the display. Also, they shouldn't have been used by Capaldi, because you can't see his attack eyebrows when he's wearing them.

It does make sense for River's sonic to be tennants... As he states its one of his screwdrivers I can very much imagine him tinkering with it at some point... And since the last thing she does is save 10 its quite sad and fitting

That doesn't make sense though because we see Ten's screwdriver explode in The Eleventh Hour and then it get repaired as the green clawed screwdriver. River's screwdirver isn't Ten's, it just happens to look like it.

Doctor Who for being what I've understood to be a public access TV show is awesome like star trek and Mr Rogers mixed together, I'm American so someone please please correct me if I'm wrong on that BBC I always thought was the British equivalent of PBS here in the states.

The War Doctor’s Sonic was made from the Character Options 4th Doctor Sonic toy. They cut off the ring, added the light and the red cap. So, the Characters Options toy of the War Doctor’s Sonic is the closest thing to the real prop available.

Bella Swan I _heartily_ disagree, and so do most people from what I can tell. The majority agree that while series 11 and 12 have been pretty crap, it’s not because of Jodie, but rather because of poor writing and showrunning. Jodie is actually a pretty good Doctor, she’s got the fun goofy energy of Tom Baker and Matt Smith, but she can manage to be serious when the moment demands it. Even if you don’t like her performance, it’s disrespectful to not give her the title. She _is_ the Doctor, whether you like it or not. There are a couple Doctors whose performances I didn’t really like either, but that doesn’t give me the right to go around saying they weren’t even a valid actor in that role. It’s rude.

The sonic lance is specifically intended as a cutting tool, and one of the interchangeable heads on the Fourth Doctor’s screwdriver was a lance head. Also, the black cap on the 9th/10th Doctor’s sonic doesn’t cover a charging port. According to the _Doctor Who Visual Dictionary,_ it actually covers a secondary sonic emitter.

I like that the war sonic has a little little scaled down version of a big red button which reflects the detention of the moment (or not after the day of the doctor but the button is still there for him to press).

Capaldi's blue sonic looks the best when he's using it. It looks the best on screen than any other sonic, but the 11th and 10th Sonics are just so iconic that everyone prefers those.

Nah, that screwdriver is by far the cheapest looking. It looks so plastic, wheras the other ones look metallic (I know they're all plastic, but they don't LOOK plastic apart from Capaldi's), and the fact the head looks like a miniature TARDIS just seems so gimmicky and and silly.

My favorite simple Screwdriver is the War Doctor's Screwdriver. It's simple, very sleek, and the light emitted is like an Orangeish Red. My favorite complex one was the 11th's. Its slightly bulky yet sleek, and the feature of a mere flick of a wrist to release the clawlike prongs off the top was cool. And I like how it emitts a nice shade of green.

The 3rd Dr only has the 'striped' painted section and other colours for a few stories. It was stripped back down to the metal again after 3 Doctors was recorded and can be seen in a lot of Pertwees stories.

I like that 13 often takes a beat to read the screen on her screwdriver. For me it makes it seem more of a functional scientific instrument rather than the plot fixer it often tends to be.

A little thing I like about War's screwdriver is the little slant by the fez-end with a tiny lens on it (I'm not sure of that is also on the 4th's but I digress). I like to think of it as a sort of projector, in that the user would activate the screwdriver and then look into the lens to learn what it has scanned, much like how 11 would open his to look at it's inner chamber.

The 9th/10th is my favourite because I also grew up on that one, and the cracked coral finish fit so well with the coral TARDIS interior, it actually looked like something the TARDIS would create in its own image, it's just the right amount of interesting without being too distracting, and the extending end worked really well to make it more compact when not in use which helps to sell the idea of the device being functional. I do like the 11th and 12th ones too, but Jesus Christ is that a mouse scrollwheel on the 12th Doctor's Sonic?! I guess even the Doctor isn't immune to scrolling through ...Twitter...? *shudder*

Random Fact: The Third Doctors Sonic Screwdriver was originally a prop from Thunderbirds (yes, the marionette/puppets)

It was the thunderbirds prop (the body) with a Captain Scarlet prop screwed on top (the emitter). Arguably the emitter was remade because as it was seen in The Sea Devils and Captain Scarlet, it had two "struts" at the bottom and one at the top, rather than the usual configuration of the other way around.

The 5th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver is the same prop as the 4th and 3rd Doctor Sonic having a overhaul done for the 4th Doctor, but the white activation ring is from metal tape that wore of revealing the white tape backing throughout the Tom Baker era.

I think it makes sense to give her a type of 10th Doctor screwdriver because it was ultimately for the 10th Doctor’s use in saving River so I imagine, 12 would want to give 10 something identifiable so he could use it be able to notice the neural uplink. The red setting was to nullify the dampening the 10th Doctor was experiencing. It makes sense for 12 to add that specifically for River’s device as he is aware of exactly what problems he would have to compensate for. That’s obviously not explicitly stated in the show but a simple reasonable enough explanation, regardless, I think.

I agree with 12's being the best, but I'm a big advocate for 13's. I wasn't really sold until I got the toy one, at which point I realised just how nice it feels to hold. I'm convinced half the reason Jodie points it so dramatically is because the physical shape compels you too - the ergonomics lend themselves really well to gripping and pointing. I'm also a big fan of the fact that the emitter crystal spins, and how the sound design includes a slight metallic ping as it clicks on and off. Makes it seem especially hand crafted, which is charming.

Is the 8th Doctor considered to be part of "Classic Who"? I know he predates "Modern Who", but I always have thought of him as being somewhere in the middle of the two. Not really part of one or the other. The 4th Doctor's Sonic is my favorite, simple and looks well made. I'm a fan of most of them and don't necessarily think they need to be redesigned with each Doctor. I do like it when they create a reason to need to create a new one, like they did with the 13th Doctor. Thanks for the video!

I liked when its main function is as a tool to defend themselves. Sabotaging equipment or locking doors. That’s what I’ve always thought it was for... Scanning stuff... scanning everything... rubs me the wrong way.

The 8th Doctor's Steam punk one and 10's are tied as my favorite two Sonics. Simply for the fact that the steam punk Sonic has such an old pulp adventure science fiction feel to it's design. It's something a space faring mad genius would build. And in a weird way I like 10's for almost the opposite reason. His just looks like a scientific instrument that has a purpose and isn't overly flashy, it gets the job done no fuss or muss.

13' sonic looks like something the Doctor would use... Once. And then immediently throw it away upon getting a better sonic that wasn't thrown together in a junkshop and will probably burst into flames one day.

My favorite screwdriver is the one 12 gives to River Song on Darilium. My second favorite is 11's And I actually do like Jodie's sonic vibrator, because I think it's such an unsubtle subtlety that it's hilarious xD

I will always have a soft spot for 9 and 10s Sonic. I used to have a toy of it where at the bottom, you could change between a normal pen or an invisible ink pen and you'd use the light from the Sonic to read the ink

The 5th Doctor’s was something distinctive with the white ring and red center ring. It was used for barely one season and destroyed. The Ray-Bans WTF!!! Where as Capaldi finally has his very own sonic and for only one season. He used it until he regenerates and lost it. Because of the new Sonic and Capaldi’s performance I wanted him to stay for another season. Both Tennent and Smith used it like a phaser/wand and it is getting boring. It was overused for sure!!!

Re the 5th Drs Sonic, it was the same prop as 4th Drs, but with new red paint. The white ring was where the metal treatment wore away over the years. You can see that ring slowly starts to be seen in Tom Backers final seasons. This is NOT a different prop and was the same one used from Colony in Space to Kinda (Visitation was filmed before Kinda). It was originally prop from Thunderbirds film that the BBC bought (along with other bits) from Gerry Anderson's Co way back in 1970/71. Hope that helps? 12 gave river a new version 10s screwdriver because he knew she was going to meet 10 and needed him to recognize her screwdriver as his to figure out how to save her. If 12 gave his 10 wouldn’t recognize it and might not have figured it out.

If I remember correctly, the Doctor didn't build the sonic lance, it was a tool he found and used...before using it as a detonator. He had it for ONE STORY!

Hi there, I don't have any favourite sonic screwdrivers, I like them all. There's one thing I would do is customise the sonic screwdriver for example gave the classic design from the first three doctors had, then add the mondern parts like the 13th light emitter part with the cracked light down the middle also have the Gallifreyan text around the rings also have different colour on the emitter. What do you think of the idea 😀

There already is, or at least was, a build your own sonic screwdriver kit. Council of Geeks has one. It didn't use existing parts though.

I love the way that the screwdriver has become advanced AF because the doctor would get smarter and so it would have more features and the doctor has gotten older and so she would be tired of figuring everything out and so uses the screwdriver to solve alot of stuff he sees as unnecessary

I’m a New Who diehard but the War Doctor’s sonic is the best. It has the solid build of a NewWho screwdriver but the simplicity of the classic designs. It just looks good. It’s not ridiculous like newer sonics, it’s not clunky like some of the older sonics. It’s a scientific instrument with a simple light on it. It’s perfect. To my mind, it’s THEE sonic screwdriver. The platonic ideal.

Having grown up with classic era, I like the whole "bullet" thing. I also like the lights, I like compact and I like the ability to extend/retract. My ideal sonic would have the effector at 90 degrees to the body like the Pertwee/Tom Baker/Davison/McGann sonics, would be fairly compact in normal use but be able to extend for additional functionality or read-outs and would have a light on the effector, and possibly glowing panels/windows down the sides. Having the effector at the end, in line with the body a la Troughton/Hurt/Eccleston/Tennant/Smith/Capaldi/Whittaker makes it look too much like a magic wand with a glowing point that you point at things - and, to be fair, it's been all-too-often used like one in recent years... The 90-degree effector makes it look like a science-fictiony tool and doesn't lend itself as readily to wildly pointing/gesticulating at objects.

Great list, even if I don't agree with some of the placings. Here's how I'd rank them: 1. 8th's (Dark Eyes) - It's beautifully unique steampunk design with wood panelling and crystal emitter which makes it stand out from the other sonics 2. 11th/12th's - Its functional, sleek design is perfectly suited for Matt's Doctor as it can be easily thrown around. Also it flicks 😃 3. 9th/10th's - As the first sonic I had seen there is an amount of nostalgia that puts it up this high but it's simplistic design and compactability makes it a classic 4. 8th's - While essentially the same design as the 4th's, the gold/brass ring makes it more unique 5. 4th - The definitive classic sonic. Simple yet effective and instantly recognisable 6. War's - Like his TARDIS, a perfect blend of the new and old aesthetic 7. 2nd's - Talk about simplistic there's nothing more simplistic than this 8. 12th's - Talk about compensating, it's oversized, clunky and busy yet oddly distinctive 9. 3rd's - What you said credit for being the first to utilise the cylindrical design with bullet emitter 10. 5th's - What you said 11. Sonic Lance - What you said 12. 13th's - I like the curved hilt and the fact its built by her but as Saxon07 says its a shiny turd Note: River's sonic has been removed from the list as I was keeping to your guideline of Doctor's sonic only but it would be placed between 3/4 and if I was to include the Laser screwdriver it would be #1

I personally love Troughton's sonic screwdriver (2nd's, the light pen). I'm unsure why I enjoy it so much, but I really just like that simplistic design and the fact its just a long silver tube with a light and a button.
