If anyone cares, the curve that Amtrak train No. 188 derailed on starts at 1:45:08. It is noticeable that the train slows from 30 sec before to the curve and that there is additional noise as it goes around the curve. However, as his speedometer shows, the Acela is traveling at 95kph (60mph) which is slightly higher than the 50mph speed limit listed in the news. That is understandable given the Acela's tilting mechanism.

Unfortunately, the train can't do that because of intermittent stops. Maybe if New York was the only stop, the train could run at that speed.

cyndie26 Chinese HST Beijing - Shanghai 1318 km 4h28min max speed 217 mph(on 95% of the track), avg. speed 190 mph 2 stops. Amtrak New York - Boston 369 km 3h38min max speed 150 mph(on 50 km of the track), avg. speed 63 mph 2 stops. Can you see the difference ?

The trains in the US also share tracks with freight railroads, and unfottunately are not exclusively designed for high speed rail. The US needs to do a major overhaul of its rail networks in order to have trains like Europe and China. The US' priorities are a bit backwards...

I lived in the northeast corridor in the 60's. The best train then was the Congressional on this run. Real luxury-six coaches and ten parlor cars, with one all drawing room, and a parlor observation on the rear. Best timekeeping however was 3 hours, 45 minutes. That trains are now making the same 226 mile run in 2 1/2 hours is impressive. The ride on any train, Acela or northeast regional south of New York City is really rough. The ride on the old New Haven is wonderful for smoothness, and the 160 mph for the last 30 minute before Providence is like glass. Great ride.

Instead of jumping ahead, you can click on the wheel (settings) at the bottom right of your screen and change the speed to double. You'll see it in half the time and can slow it down again when you find a spot you want to see in real time.

The one time I boarded an Acela train, taking the same trip shown in the video, the train broke down in the Maryland suburbs right after exiting the Washington DC boundaries, this left me with a bad taste in my mouth when dealing with Amtrak only exacerbated by the fact we we're all herded on to a normal Amtrak train that was already full after this incident. I'm beginning to think I'm cursed because the next time I took Amtrak from New York bound for Plattsburgh someone committed suicide by jumping in front of our train in colonie right outside of Albany. Acela seemed like it was as good as it got for traveling the Northeast corridor w Amtrak if everything went as planned though!

Thank you John for posting this and I'm glad I didn't take the Acela and after watching this lame boring video now i know why! Somebody from Amtrak needs to take a trip to both Europe and Japan and study their high speed rail! I was on vacation to NYC and then off to DC by rental car. Newark airport to DC took just 3 and a half hours! After that I flew home! Our rail system is so outdated!

Thank you for this great video from Germany. As someone who is very interested in politics, especially in U.S. politics it was cool to see the train route Joe Biden (some call him Amtrak Joe 😉) travelled on from Washington, D.C. to Wilmington, Delaware in his 36 years serving as a U.S. Senator for the state of Delaware in which he had an average of 217 commutes a year. And even though this comment might be unpopular I hope that he will become the 46th President of the United States at noon on January 20, 2021.

Com'in into New York is always the grandest. Look at all the switches and the platforms as you arrive into the Mecca of the country. It's the biggest station along the route. I may be a bit biased cause I'm a native New Yorker. Great video & trip! Cloudy all the way.

Back in the late 1970s, I rode the Metroliner from DC to NY, but it wasn't as fast as this train. This train looks like it goes at least 125 mph in many places.

I think the PHL-NY leg is the best part for me. All of the interlockings, ZOO interlocking after 30th St is just a maze and gigantic...then the speed the whole ride up and scenery.

This is a very interesting trip to take. You get to meet a lot of celebs, news makers, reporters, TV commentators, bureaucrats, and other interesting people who've taken those hats off and now are just fellow riders. It's amazing what I've learned from these folks and how they know days or months early about what's going to happen next. You also learn how to spot the ones who are completely full of shit.

+Bighorn Transit I think it's because unlike most of Europe and China, there is no dedicated highspeed train line in the US. The Acela has to share the tracks with commuter and freight trains, forcing it to slow down many times along the route

I am doing this trip March16 th leaving New York leaving at 3. Am for Washington DC returning to New York the following day for a Guyanese I consider the price for the four tickets of course Miss Jean will be there I consider the price Exorbitant but what the hell. I am 82 years old have worked all my life so I need to experience the rush of adrenaline as the Acela acrelates

Generally wearisome landscape: single-story, commercial sprawl and scrub forests. Most of the impracticality of passenger rail service in the U.S. derives from the lack of density of its so-called cities. Motor fuel prices are kept artificially low, and airlines and airports have been heavily subsidized since WWII. Laptops have aided with appealing to business travelers since it's easier to work over the 2.5 hours which lapse. Also, there's a sense of less pressure..... Sleep is even possible....?

The reason the Europeans and Japanese laugh at our high speed train is that for one it only runs on the NEC, two most of the NEC is owned by Amtrak, 3 in the other 2 countries those are national rail lines which also controls the freight lines on those tracks, and last of all our government doesn't feel the need to pour money into our rail system.

Just curious... When was this video actually taken? At the 2:09:57 - 2:10:09 point, the train crosses the Raritan River with significant flooding of the Rt. 18 northbound lanes just outside of New Brunswick.

It has been a long time since I rode on the Amtrak Acela from D.C./Washington Union Station to Boston/Boston South Station, not since February 13th. I would have rode on it a bit more, but because of this stupid Covid 19 I cannot. I hope that sometime this year I can ride on the Acela from Washington Union Station to Boston South Station, even if it is just for an hour that I have to stay in Boston before heading back to D.C. I want to ride on Amtrak once again before this year ends.

Don G. The US is a lot largger. Acela runs around 125-150 mph where as the British HST runs 125 mph on old rail lines which were built more than a hundred and fifty years ago. To go much faster the trains would have to run on newly laid rail lines. As it is both HST and Acela attain their speed with tilting technology. Acela takes 6 hours to get to Boston MA from Washington DC. A person could fly that distance and catch a cab downtown to downtown in less than 3 hours. It takes Amtrak 3 days to cross the county coast to coast averaging less than 50 mph. Even if we tripled the speed it would take a day. The British spent billion pounds to build a new high speed rail link to the Channel Tunnel for 5.8 billion pounds for 69 miles. The Channel Tunnel cost 4.8 billion pounds. A British pound is worth off hand around 1.5 US dollars. The distance from Washington DC to Boston MA is 439 miles using I-95, slightly more than 6 times as far as the new Channel Link rail line. The distance using I-80 from Chicago to New York City is 790 miles, almost 11 times as far as the new Channel Link rail line. The distance using I-44 and I-40, the old US Hwy 66 route, is 2121 miles. is more than 30 times as far as the new Channel Link rail line. You do the math figuring each 69 miles runs in US dollars around 9 billion. Offhand, 99 billion to Chicago from New York City, and another 270 billion to Los Angeles from Chicago. Currently Amtrak's annual budget is less than 2 billion per year, FY 2014 is 1.6 billion. Simply put, the US will never spend so much for a cross country high speed train when flying is faster.

SeaToby11 The British are studying HS2, building new high speed rail lines to Birmingham with two branches one to Manchester and the other to Leeds from Birmingham. Some 340 miles total, for around 43 billion pounds. Another report claims it will cost 80 billion pounds. About five times as far as HS1, the Channel Tunnel Link. Much ess than half the distance to Chicago from New York City.The British can consider this as the bulk of British passengers from the north could reach London using this route. But one cannot say the same with one cross country US high speed rail line.

I really want to ride the Acela Express from Boston to New York in a few months, but tickets are so freaking expensive. The Northeast Regional seems like a very slow train.

Northeast regional is NOT slow by any means. Acela saves marginal time and the NE Regional is the second fastest train in the US.

I wonder when this was shot it looks like it was after a really good rain that makes it look really good, the bad part of Acela no Coach seat first and busnes it would be good if they had coach and law weekend c fares like Washington Baltimore ten dollars only

The new Amtrak Acela train that's going to be testing in the northeast corridor it'll be our new USA bullet train since our old USA bullet train will be replaced by that.

MegaPrincessmeg, no those tunnels in Baltimore MD are the B&O Tunnels there are two of these tunnels one is South of the Baltimore Penn Station and the other tunnel is North of Baltimore Penn Station

1:59:45 hey i think i found my station. Also this is a thing i do where i go on these videos and find specific things like the trenton makes the world takes bridge and then find hamilton station. My good old hometome of hamilton, where im writing this from. Also fun tidbit before the trenton bridge we pass through morrisville, my friend is the mayor. Cool guy and an electrician
