It's most likely a mandolin you're hearing...aside from the synth bagpipes.

Ace, Just for reference. When he sang he learned a little something from Charlie. He was referring to the Viet Cong who the US were fighting in Viet Nam.

The phrase "I learned a thing or two from Charlie" to me, means he booby trapped the pot fields. The Viet Cong were notorious for their booby traps.
@ritafoster4958

Also- he is suffering severe PTSD from those 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, and the sound of the DEA chopper in the air looking for his marijuana crop is triggering flashbacks of the war. That’s why he is waking up screaming at night. He has booby trapped those growing fields ( he learned how to do that from “ Charlie”- the Vietcong)- and if the agents go into them, they probably won’t survive. He’ll kill them, just like his Grandaddy did to the Revenue Man who found his moonshine stills in the woods. His father died in a police car chase while running the whiskey, and his car exploded when it crashed. That’s why you could smell the burning whiskey all down that road.

Some of the instruments in "COPPERHEAD ROAD" include the bagpipes, guitar, mandolin, and drums. Such a nice collection. Steve Earle had a fantastic sound, really love this song. Do check out the official video to this song, even if just for your own enjoyment. You'll love it, plus you get to listen to the song again, right? I haven't played this song on my bass, but I do play another song of his called "GUITAR TOWN". kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d69-iLN3x6zUoZs.html It's a banger, too.

I was lucky enough to see Steve Earle at the legendary "Together at the Bluebird Cafe" live set with Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark at the Bluebird Cafe in 1995. It was one of the best live sets that I've ever seen. It's available on CD and I would encourage everyone to seek it out,

Mandolin is making that sound.I believe there might be a bagpipe near the end also.BTW,the bagpipe is considered a weapon of war and was banned in Scotland after the battle of Culloden in 1746 for about 50 years ,along with wearing kilts ,and speaking the native language of Scots Gaelic.

The banjo is an instrument that has roots in the “banjar”. The banjar was a gourd with a stick neck and strings. The gourd had an animal skin stretched across it to produce sound vibration. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ouCkY9lq19W5Zps.htmlsi=32zfHhnb45juD7BJ It was brought to America on slave ships from Africa and eventually evolved into the banjo we see and hear today. The instrument you hear in this song is a “mandolin” and has it’s roots in Italy before spreading across Europe and eventually finding it’s way to America. This song is one of Steve Earle’s best IMO and continues to amaze me. Great reaction

If you're going to be a OHW it might as well be cool like this one🎶 Happy 4/20😎😁 My "sea story" in this regard is, when my ship pulled into Bangkok Thailand in the early 80's, my friend, who was about to get out when the ship returned home, took three shoeboxes and hallowed out two decorative candles and stuffed them with Thai-buds and mailed them to a classified mailbox. Then when he got home to a very happy ol'lady, mortgage caught up, bills paid and a shoebox.😎

You said you wanted more... this isn't what you were expecting but... Just for your amusement, search "female copperhead road", you'll find a listing for copperhead road by a channel called "Amy N' Me"... they do a version, with many changed lyrics, and an "extra verse", which is all told from The Sister's point of view... its fun, it'll make ya smile, and, you'll learn a little more about the Pettimore Family Biz. lol. Its worth 5 mins of your time (I'm 63, and I know stuff. lol).👍🏼✌🏼🇨🇦

Hey real moonshine makes good stories essentially when you and most your boys grew up around it. The guys from east coast and west coast cities that usually shotgun whiskey with us can’t understand why we’re just sipping. On the side we’re laying bets on which ones gonna fall off the roof first. 😂l😂 jarhead brothers
