Achill island - Keel and Keem Beach | Co Mayo - Ireland
Achill Island is Ireland's largest offshore island and it has the highest sea cliffs in Ireland with a peak of 688 meters. Lashed by the wild Atlantic Ocean and carved by the windswept rain, Achill Island is a truly spectacular place. It has two most beautiful beaches in the world and they are Keel and Keem beach, the latter being most famous one. Keem Bay, a perfect horseshoe bay with a Blue Flag beach at the head of a remote valley, should not to be missed - Until 50 years ago it was the centre for basking shark hunting. The precarious cliff-top road was only built in the 1960s.
Both Keel and Keem beaches have golden sand in the sunset and sunrise and white sand otherwise and blue waters. Both are superb for photographs. Achill is joined to the mainland by a bridge at Achill Sound. The 3km long Blue Flag beach is one of the best surfing locations in Ireland, and several local providers offer surf board and wetsuit hire as well as surfing lessons at Keel strand. Keel beach has stunning views of the majestic cliffs and blue waters and also white sand beach and it is a very large beach.
There is also a great Camping site called Keel Sandybanks Caravan & Camping Park. It is a 4 Star family run caravan & camping park, located on Keel Beach on Achill Island, Co. Mayo in the West of Ireland. The park provides full services for camping and caravanning. Keem Bay, at the western end of Achill Island is one of the most picturesque small beaches in Ireland. Clean white sands slope gently into the turquoise waters of the bay. The beautiful beach is backed by grassy slopes and the bay is sheltered on either side by cliffs, which support a variety of plants and wildlife. There is a stunning cliff-top walk from Benmore to Achill Head. The bay once had a booming fishing industry. Locals would set out in wooden currachs to catch basking sharks. Nearby, the abandoned village of Bunowa houses the remains of 17 circular cottages.
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Achill island, Keel and Keem beach and will always stay as a memorable day in our minds. Only one downside as that we did not know that we should have taken any precautionary fly propellant ointments and as result we all got badly bitten by some flies in the Achill Hill view point and Keem Bay.
