In this video:
00:01 - First music gear
02:51 - Early influences
04:49 - Sequencers vs instruments
07:55 - Discovering the TB-303
13:34 - Programming the 303
16:10 - TR-909, SH-101 and other classic gear

I love the early dance producers mentality because they did great things with minimal rejected gear.

The reference of Gerald hearing Ice T '6 in the mornin' in relation to hearing sounds on records from machines you own. Takes me back to my own studio days when we used the Yamaha RX5 to record a few singles and a few weeks later we hear some of the familiar sounds of that machine in a MC Hammer album. It told me I was using the 'type' of gear that professionals were using at the time. Makes ya feel good as an artist.

That was my exact experience too. Going into the local music store as a teenager in the 80s to lust after the synths and one day they had a second hand TR-808 for sale. Same thing, I had never seen one but as soon as they let me try it I knew the sound and had to buy it. I only wish I still had it - it's why I called myself Rolanoid.

it was the 'Street Sounds Electro' compilations that got me started in electronic music in the mid 80's. Herbie Hancock 'Rokit' was the first record I bought in 1984. 51 now and still programming drum machines and synths. Voodoo Ray and Humanoid Stakker were the start of acid house scene for me. I'm sure I heard Voodoo Ray on 'The hitman and her' and it changed everything!

I first heard Voodoo Ray at Manchester G-Mex on 17th December 1988. Mike Pickering and Mike Prendergast [DJing as MP2] played it before New Order came on and it's the only time I've heard such a reaction for a record being played by a DJ at a gig. The place went wild and that was the moment I knew something big was brewing.

Been a fan of Gerald and 808 State since the beginning. Salsa House was an amazing tune back in the day. Squeeze the Trigger was the Ice T track with the 303.

Im from Huddersfield across the moors and used to frequent Hacienda and conspiracies. Used to hit the record shops hard buying import vinyl. Early detroit transmat metroplex trax etc influenced the UK Techno Acid scene it may seem.

And the jazz funk scene influence, as used to drop some foot moves to acid and techno before I discovered DRUGS BABY.

Why am I not surprised that he says he was a loner? He's always been his own person pushing his own sound within a sound. The man's presence in the UK Dance scene is a blessing to us all.

I use my 303 clone all the time for the basslines, it still sounds funky and cuts through the mix just right. Since I was around at the 90s, I'm of course completely ear trained for the sound 😂
