Bott SMARTVAN Van Racks and Storage Solutions
Bott Smartvan is a German company that is coming to the US market. They design and manufacture a wide range of storage and mobile working options including shelving, integrated and removable drawers, removable boxes, and cases by Systainer, lockable cabinets, tie-downs, tool clips, and work benches, and vice options.
They also have a raised load-bearing floor system that comes in half and full configurations, but it's not available in the U.S. yet.
Bott Smartvan Van Racking | Design and Installation
We worked with the bott Smartvan folks to create a customized rack system for my van. When I say customized, I’m talking about a complete tool storage and organization system that includes shelves, drawers, and Systainer toolboxes. We used their online configurator config.bottsmartvan.com/vehicle to select our system and the folks at bott Smartvan reached out and confirmed our choices.
Five initial takeaways that attracted me to the bott Smartvan system were:
1. Custom Fitted to Your Van
2. DIY Install ready
3. Flexibility To Move Around
4. Sleek Looking - Matching toolbox [Systainer boxes], drawers, and Shelves
5. Crash Test Certified
Custom Fitted to Your Van
The bott Smartvan shelf rack system is a fully customizable storage system that comes with vehicle-specific mounting brackets. It is designed to be installed as a DIY project and doesn’t require drilling into the vehicle frame.
The bott Smartvan racking is comprised of a steel frame that uses vehicle-specific brackets and bolts that fit the van's existing manufacturing fixing points, such as roll bars and structural ribs.
This no-drill fixing solution means you are causing zero damage to your vehicle. Once the frame is installed you simply mount the drawer or toolbox shelf rails into the frame at the different heights and depths within the frames in a configuration of your choice.
The shelving system is compatible with the Systainer storage system, but also has shelves that fit other manufacturer toolboxes if you choose to go that route.
DIY Install Ready
The bott Smartvan system is designed to follow the side profiles of your van giving you the extra central aisle load space.
Because it mounts to existing manufacturer points in the van [like the tie downs and structural rails, it is so much easier to install than a plywood shelf system or an after-market system that requires you to drill through the floor and through bolt.
In contrast, ply van racking is bulky and nonadjustable and therefore cannot be customized to fit the profiles of your van. As a result, it wastes a lot of valuable space in your van.
After-market systems often require drilling through bolts in the floor which eventually rusts through repeated exposure to the weather, rain, water, snow, and salt.
Flexibility To Move Around
The bott Smartvan bolt-in system means you can move components around easily, giving you flexibility and space to swap things around, as you change your mind on the shelf, drawer, or toolbox placement.
I found myself doing this after the first week of using the system. I placed many of the most used tools closer to the rear door so I could grab them without entering the van.
Sleek Looking - Matching Tool Kits and Shelves
The final product gets a verbal response of “wow” or “that’s clean looking,” compliment from everyone that sees my shelf system.
Crash Tested
The bott Smartvan has been crash tested to comply with EU ECE / R17 standards, maximizing driver and passenger safety.
Thoughts On the Bott Smartvan System
The system was easy to install and goes together like an erector set, for adults! Plus, I felt good knowing that the system was structurally designed by engineers and crash test rated.
One thing my guys and I noticed immediately was that we gained more center aisle space, in fact, I’m sure we more than doubled the space we had.
Another immediate benefit I noticed was that we have better rear door access into the van. My earlier configuration required me to open both doors to enter, now I can get in one door.
Bott Smartvan | Cost
The average cost starts around $4000 and goes up depending on what you purchase, remember this is a 100% custom and flexible system. You certainly get what you pay for.
After installing the system, myself, and using it for some time I find the bott Smartvan racking system to be a strong, durable, and flexible system. I’ve enjoyed the flexibility of the system that allows me to easily switch things around as I determine my workflow in the van.
I also like the smaller-sized, lighter boxes that have allowed me to focus on the efficiency of design and space. Most importantly I love that I now feel more organized.

I'm just a diyer and wood turner but my actual job is allll about workflow optimization and I can totally relate to limited time, so my obsession with maximizing efficiency has spilled over into hobbies... It's so true grouping tools and accessories... Rather than putting all drill bits together, putting bits for the press by the actual drill press whereas impact bits etc with their respective tools makes so much sense.

Hi I'm a german plumber... Bott is a very common van storage system here, but I never saw this one! Looks great to me 👌! Here in germany craftsman from many different professions use an extendable vise for the storage system, even the roofers or carpenters .. I haven't seen you do that very often over there! I need it every day, couldn't work without it...! Best craftsman greetings

The systainers have always been better than the packout. The basic idea is to not have to move one thing to get to another. I’m always trying to lose weight, hate clutter. If it’s clean and neat and you keep it that way, it’s easier to stay disciplined before little messes get out of hand.

Tool organisation/storage is 100% just as important as having the right tools for the job. A lot of older builders and tradesman still rock around with their makita bags from 10+ years ago, random stuff thrown in there. Every battery is flat and they’re constantly looking for bits and pieces. The simple addition of a modular box/drawer system and organisation drastically increases the time taken to compete jobs as well as the quality.

yo im not gonna lie,, ive been slowly buying up as many of the dewalt tstak drawers (1 n 2 shelves) as possible and organizing all my tools n shit.. i go w tstak cuz im working outta my truck, and these are the only Modular tool boxes that will fit in the back of my truck w space to open n access.. but anyway, i noticed 1) that it saves me like a good hour onna daily of digging thru pikes of rando tools and bags and boxes and buckets and all that. everything is labeled and accessible so i can grab what i need n be working within like 3 4 mins... vs the 20 mins it used to take me.,,, 2) it helped show me just how much shit i have in my kits,,, like i dont need 8 needlenose plies, i dont need to carry a full complete setup for painting for a 6 man team on the daily,, and as ive organized everything,, i can pick n choose boxes to pull out n leave at home if i wont need them.. but im not going to lie there are a few small downsides to it,, nothin wild but like , • every new lil tool, be it a 8 pc 3/8 hex allen key socket set, or a new cordless flood light,,, every tool i get means ive got to go thru and reorganize a good portion of my entire setup. which isnt necessarily bad,,, i like it too , but whos got time to keep switching up n updating the setup.. (plus moving things around constantly, u forget whats where) • And the most consequential time consuming aggravating issue is , PUTTING EVERYTHING BACK IN ITS PROPER PLACE!!!!! when i work, ive got my 1 empty big tool bag i use n pull out all the tools ill needd on the day n toss em in there to carry around.. which in theory is the smartest route,, but anyone on the jobsite knows that you never have EVERYTHING u need right then and there... sumn comes up at lunchtime so i gotta go grab this this that....etc.. by the time the day ends, ive emptied out half of all my tool boxes and just piled n mooshed up all in one bag--jist like the mess i was tryna avoid!!! lol --- and to go thru sort out n put away properly all those tools, has been taking me roughly another hour at the end of the day... im usually always the last one to leave the site at night, cuz im laying out my tools to sort out n put in their proper places,,, while everyone else is throwing tools loose in the back of their trucks n hittin del taco ... yet here i am separating my drill bits and and wood boring bits into diff boxes. .. ultimately I really like the organization that i have, and the ability to know without a doubt where exactly a specific tool is in my truck,,, so i can tell the coworker aye 3rd box from the top, 2nd drawer has my spaddles, go snatch em! vs me diggin around like a dumpster diver for 20 mins to give someone else my bits to break lol.. and while i actually enjoy the time putting tools away n setting up dedicated soots for things,,, I dont seem to have either enough time to properly do this before and after,,, and I seem to not have enough space in my truck to store everything i ysed n need for work on a daily basis.. ..... long story short,,, i needa sell my truck n get a van like u... so i ca get more boxes to hold more tools!!!! lol

Man I love keeping my tools organized. It's always odd to me to see videos where bits aren't kept with drills or nails aren't kept with nailers. Funny you mentioned move out day on jobs. Just cleaned out a job on the beach where we didn't have anywhere to park the work trailer but over time we ended up emptying most of it so we brought the trailer for the clean out and it's just so satisfying to put everything back in its place. I'm going to do a video soon and I'd love for you to check it out. I think you'd appreciate it. It doesn't look like those videos you see where the trailers look spit shined every day but that's what I love most about it. Very organized and clearly used for a lot of work. Has good sheet and trim stock storage. A miter saw that outfeeds to a router table that outfeeds to the table saw. Fridge, microwave, the works.

Nice video. I like your B-Roll too showing how things fit and how you organized the system. This provides a bit of inspiration! For background, Bott and Tanos worked together to design the Systianer3, 3rd gen systainer. So if you have Festool, Fein or other systainers that are 3rd Gen, the rail guides are molded into the side of your systainer already. If you have T-Loc or Classic generation, there are shelves for the smartvan system, I understand. Haven't used them myself, but saw them.

Rob, I noticed your Sprinter has a smooth floor in it. It looks very similiar to the aftermarket floor I put in my Transit. It looks to me like you mounted the steel frame on top of your floor with no cutouts, but Bott mentions having to cutout aftermarket floors to install. Is there adjustment in the steel frame to accomodate the common aftermarket plywood floors? I believe mine is around 9/16" thick (1/2" baltic with plasticy coating).

I've got a couple van questions that I haven't seen anyone deal with. The difference in functionality with a High-Roof, and a Cube-Van, or Box/Van. I can see where each body style has advantages over the other. I see you have a High-Roof body style. Ford Transit seems to be taking over this segment of the North American market, Box/Van conversions also becoming more popular. What are your thoughts.

Van vs trailer depends on a lot of things. Vans are good for guys who move around a lot day to day, work in cramped cities, and for those who work in areas where they wouldn't want all their tools at risk overnight. Trailer if you typically have space to park one at job and at home, work longer term jobs where the trailer is parked for weeks, and where you feel comfortable leaving it overnight.

I don't expect an answer here since it's been 11 months since the video was put up, but how do you bring all your tools in the drawers (like your many nailers and the accessories that go with them), into a house for a job? Do you have a large empty tool bag (or many smaller ones) where you can take all the contents from the many drawers you need for a job, put them in the bags, then bring into the house. After you're done you come out to your van, then replace all the tools from the tool bags into the drawers? I'm trying to learn this stuff to start my own business, so if anyone can help me understand how this works for bringing, then replacing tools in drawers, that would be great.
