The most annoying thing about restoring these BBCs is that the ROM port cover on the keyboard is missing or damaged by being pressed through (Probably by a bored kid in the classroom in the 80's!!) leaving a gaping hole on the left side of the keyboard. Luckily you can buy a BBC Acorn ROM PORT COVER on eBay by a guy called riscman - problem solved. They are really good and keep with the aesthetics of the machine and they are really cheap.

Hello, one of my first jobs after leaving school was BBC Micro repair, I have seen hundreds of broken BBC's in my time and usually the dreaded single beep failure was 9 time out of 10 due to the west 6522 not initialising and this would prevent the computer getting to the prompt. I found the best way to repair them was to remove the unnecessary ics first and swap out the west 6522, the bbcs were built like proverbial out house and it is unlikely there is a secondary fault with it. the composite signal was meant for a high resolution monochrome (green screen) monitor. that's why s39 is not populated, for best results use an RGB monitor connected to the ttl rgb output, and remember the default mode is mode 7 which is driven by a separate video IC (SAA 5050) which has a small memory foot print, so switch to a mode other than mode 7 may reveal memory issues, also the kernel ROM cannot be placed in another socket. ps the 12v supply is only for external floppys.

Pin 1 of the eprom is VPP which should be 5v since you have 5v on pin 28 you don't need the pin.

Re the games, thats what you use the cartridge port for once you repair the bad pin. You already know you can run games from ROM with the appropriate header so simply plug cartridge port into socket 4 and mount it out on the case through the slot on the keyboard front.

Granny's Garden was my first game and computer experience. I also vaguely remember the Domesday Project and the turtle thing that would move around. We also had a modem to send messages to Icelandic(?) kids, and waited weeks for an answer. Actually, I'm not sure if 'Magnus' ever did answer me lol 🤣

As a long-term BBC micro fan (was my main machine as a child, and propelled me into my career as a developer) I love to see a BBC Micro up and running again.

Tezza's Vids are awesome. I messaged him a few months ago asking for more vids and the fact I missed his distinctive nose whistle. He replied laughing. Seems a great bloke, full of knowledge and a One Stop Shop of everything. Most formats covered if not ALL computer wise. He has a lot of Stuff.

Great stuff, yet again Gadge. Was looking forward to this saga after reading tweets. Looking forward to BBC2 - just hoping I don't need a second aerial....

Great job! Multiple failures and intermittent failures (clock) are tough, having them together is really tough!

Again my first step into computers was a BBC. They used to keep it in the Library. In lessons we did typing on it. Once the lesson finished we played RallyX, it was a great version and I was hooked. I used to go in there on my breaks to play it. Then I got a 464 and the rest is history...
