This round we re-stock the lumber pile with some glorious white oak, ash and some hickory. Steve designs, builds and launches a quick and dirty pram for fishing adventures on the local brook and Arabella gets some more oak planks added to her hull.
It's a jam packed episode, enjoy!

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I started watching these videos about a year ago and have slowly gotten closer and closer to the present, rationing them to help with working from home and, later, being laid off. Almost a year to the day after you posted this one I want to thank you for that opening statement you made: I think it's the sort of thing we all need to vocalize as much as we can. Good on you.

Hi Steve, I'm currently binge watching your entire channel. I'm very impressed with you, Alix and your project. Two things that have stood out for me so far are, your statements when you said something like..... "If you have a problem, come and say it to my face, I'm more than happy to discuss it." And, by far your best yet.... "All of you'd fighting for your rights.....all the power to you." Massive Respect from New Zealand 😀👍

00:07 I would stay clear of those topics... One of the main good things about this channel (there are so many!) is that one doesn't have to put up with the matters of the news and actuality. It is a good thing, not a bad one, that this channel doesn't mention the topics that we already hear about everywhere else. Especially if they have nothing to do with your videos. Not saying those matters aren't important, or that I don't agree with your views, just saying it would be a positive thing if this wonderful channel continued to be a getaway from the things that fill our thoughts all day every day. John Haxx I’m not mad, just in awe. To say you 100% support them suggests you acknowledge every “privileged” person deserves what’s coming to them! Having free access to these trees and land is an absolute privilege, he’s lucky beyond most people’s dreams, the protesters are simply wanting to be as lucky as him and are prepared to fight for that luck, are people not prepared to fight to defend that same luck? Seems to me the unlucky ones resort to crime, irrespective of race. They come into this world with nothing, have limited choices, no backstop or safety net when they make a wrong life choice (as we all do) and find themselves trapped in poverty or on the wrong side of the law. Having family money no matter how modest certainly makes life easier, even if you do it alone it’s nice to know you have support (just knowing you can have food on the plate with a roof over your head back at your parents, or maybe knowing there’s an inheritance eventually). So when people say they worked hard for what they have thus they’re immune from “guilt” is false if you include a single penny of family money into the equation. So, are you really prepared to give it all up because the truth is - you enjoy what you have through historical means? If you’re not then why go there? People come to boat building channels to escape this nonsense.

Steve, did you notice how your tiny boat became less tippy when you sat down in it? You lowered its center of gravity. Ever since you started with the full oak planking, I have been worried about your deviation from the original specification. Back in the hay days of wooden boat building (say 1600s) quite a few boats sank not long after their launch due to a center of gravity problem (CaG). Planking with much denser wood will shift the CaG upwards, due to the increased ratio in weight planking to ballast keel. I strongly recommend that you invest some money into a 3D CAD model of Arabella which will allow you to precisely compare the CaG versus original design and to play with your various ideas for cutting weight in the future. A few 1000$ could save you a whole lot of hell in the future.

Hi Steve, Acorn to Arabella for me is about living a 30 minute parallel life vicariously, through your efforts to build a boat, you lovingly named Arabella. By the time I was your age, I had a business and a family, I made my life choices, which excluded all other pathways, including building a boat. Your successes and your failures in building Arabella, mirrors Every Man's experience who's ever built anything of significance. That is the secret to the success of your Channel by the way, which brings me to my point. America is a merit-based Society that rewards excellence, this meritocracy is what the left calls "white privilege" you don't have to be white to have "white privilege" just the tenacity to dream a dream and fight everyday to build it. Thousands of dreams have gone up in smoke over the last couple of weeks in the name of "white privilege" I am certain you didn't realize this when you made your opening statement.

You write like someone who still buys into the myth that all men in the US have equal access to resources, when they absolutely do not. There is no true meritocracy in a rigged system. Nah. Ara is heavy in the bottom, so short of them strapping an equal weight on the deck, i don't see that happening. If anything, i think she might be a very stable boat, she has wide lines, so lots of flat surface under, and a decent size. What i am curious about, and what worried the guys so much in the start, is how she's going to sit in the water. One disadvantage of heftier boats is the fact that you have less moving weight to trim with. So if they don't get the balance right she might be difficult to make level in calm waters. But that's a long way from here, so not today's worry.

@@aserta they still have a lot of ballast called for in the plans, so I expect that they will be fine. Remember, the plans call for something like 6" of concrete in the bilge. I've enjoyed following your videos. A helpful way to tell ash from walnut is the ash bark is more deeply 'honeycombed' than walnut and often, in my mind's eye seems to look like the outline of the letter 'A'. If that doesn't help give the answer, branches are OPPOSITE on ash, but ALTERNATE on walnut. Very few trees have OPPOSITE branching, except maple, ash, and dogwood (madog was how we were taught in college botany). Certainly this is made more difficult when presented with a tree that has been felled. Finally, mahogany of all types is lighter per unit weight than ash and walnut.

Steve. Small boat needs closed cell foam sponsons in a triangular or trapezoidal shape will really help with stability. Putting the width of the bottom in a familiar width as canoes and creating a positively buoyant craft. I dont know the technical name of the closed cell foam to examine.

Tom . Fair? That’s a whoot. Is it fair to judge the all police of the US by the actions of a few? Is it fair to charge a cop with first degree murder who shoots a fleeing felon with a history of violent crime who is shooting a weapon at him? Is it fair to the biz owners who get there livelihood burn to the ground? The result of all the protests will be the further destruction of the black community’s from within, as the police pull back fighting crime . The protesters will go home and the black communities will live with the consequences . This burning and looting and blaming the police and racial injustice for all the ills of the black community have happened before, this time will not be any differant . Is that fair? Steve’s little sermon did not include denouncing violence it all its forms. If it had I would have quietly thrown up and not made my pithy little comment.

@@Digimer So tell me Dig what do they want in Washington state? They have a liberal Gov, a Lib mayor, a lib councilman, a lib police chief, lib head prosecutor....And all the issue cities are run by the left. Maybe go to them and tell them to fix it after being in charge for decades. Baltimore city elected 4 mayors straight that all left in disgrace before their terms were up. One of them almost re-won the most recent primary. Being a Rep has not won in Baltimore since the 1960's she was a couple hundred votes short of being mayor again. They keep putting in the same people that use them and they still expect change. So what should I do, go to Baltimore and protest the liberal Democrat black mayor and the current black police chief in a predominate black city?
