Americana veteran Darrell Scott stopped by the Acoustic Guitar Sessions studio to perform three songs on his Stefan Sobell guitar.
“You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” is from his 1997 album Aloha from Nashville (Sugar Hill), written after trying to find information about his mysterious great-grandfather whom his family won’t discuss, except to note that he played banjo, was from Harlan county, Kentucky, and “did something bad.”
Next he performs “Down to the River” from his 2016 release The Couchville Sessions (Full Light/Thirty Tigers), which features a voice-over from country-folk legend Guy Clark that was 14 years in the making.
He rounds off with a song his father wrote the lyrics to, “With a Memory like Mine,” from 2000’s Real Time (Full Skies).

I hate how under appreciated he is like he writes all these amazing songs and big artists come in and take all the recognition, it honestly upsets me.

He could sing "Mary had a little lamb" and I'd still be impressed as soon as he starts flat picking. His personal musical prose evokes an emotional response most performers seldom achieve.

Darrel Scott is a national treasure . . . and I love it that HIS favourite songwriter was our Gordon (Lightfoot). But I could listen to Mr. Scott all day long - and often have.

I never knew what Daryl Scott was all about till just this morning. A couple years back I stumbled across his version of “American Tune” while streaming that old bluegrass show I used to listen to when I lived in D.C. I downloaded it, stuck it in my collection, love it still. Then I caught a KZfaq vid about 6 months back, Scott live with some mandolinist, I think, forget who exactly. It was okay. Then I today happen to catch this. Lord, oh, lord, what HAVE I been missing all these years? THIS is Daryl Scott?? Well, it’s manna from above, it’s like they dug up a whole new play by Shakespeare, a new novel Mark Twain had written and stuck in a drawer. Wow. What a soothing balm for the week I had to say goodbye to John Prine, to find an old friend I never knew I had. We’ve got a lot of catching up to do.

I have been trying to play guitar using both pick and fingerpicking, I think they call it "Hybrid picking", when I first saw Waylon do it (I think it was Waylon). And I agree with you that Mr. Scott is just a wonder at it. He's just so exceptional in both his singing and his picking.

What impresses me about a video of an excellent picker like Darrell Scott done by a resource that focuses on Acoustic Guitar is just how flippin' much Mr. Scott relies on the strength and accuracy of his left hand pinky finger. I mean, that finger is pretty much the core of this man's music, it seems. How cool is it that we got a video of HOW to play the music? Thank you Acoustic Guitar!!!

Smaller guitars tend to be braced lightly for finger picking which doesnt necessarily translate well for strumming.

Sounds like a short scale, shallow body, new - tight sounding acoustic. Maybe the African maker Michaud? Sounds like Euro Spruce over Ebony? I an sure I am wrong with some of my guesses but I do, I do like it.

Well it's capoed and he's in a different key...It got great clarity....Still I understand, I have an F-25 Lowden that's advertised to do flat picking, but it more a fingerstyle machine.

Ohh yes he is a fabulous guitarist and song writer, I have been following Darrell for years, it's that GUITAR I was referring to, it is NOT a boomer.. He usually plays some very great sounding guitars like in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLycfN2jmtfKcY0.html -- I've played guitar since age 8 and owned just about every make on the planet! Life is Good.. I love this version of Harlan, and listen to the difference in this guitar ! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNqDf7B4yJq6g3U.html
