What do onions and studio acoustics have in common?
They're layer over layer and while it might look fine on the outside it might also be rotten to its core.
🤪
Unfortunately it's not even that exaggerated.
And if you keep this concept in mind the next time you look at your room's frequency response, you’ll also understand why I recommend you treat your room “shotgun style” if you’re DIYing your acoustics.

Yes, I very much did (3:40) "approach the treatment in a different way" from everybody else I see doing room treatment videos. That video is on my channel if anyone want's to see it, can't post a link anymore since Google blocks them all. My approach was very different indeed. I broke most of the rules and still proved that it can be done cheaper and as good as some of those $600 panels that everybody keeps hanging on the walls. Sorry folks, I just hate those things! From aesthetics to price, there is a far better way in my opinion. When money is no object and space can be designed and purposefully built, well then a room inside a room is the way to go. That will be my next home, hopefully. But when you're physically locked in to a shape and size with no good options, well that's why I did it my way. I've got new speakers coming yet this week then a full re-tune for my room acoustics is in order. Which I also do way differently than most every video I see here. I'll make a show and tell video when I do the retune. Anyway, just my nickles worth, I really like your videos! Cheers man 🍻

Hi, and thanks for everything so far. My bass response and the resulting upper frequencies have responded really well to having added as much bass absorption (10cm panels and a 55cm corner soffits) as I can practically fit. Some of the tall panels however need some reinforcement on the front and I was thinking about rebuilding them with foil, or card stock or cardboard on the room facing side. I understand that this won't affect my bass response, but am I risking too much higher end control? My sides are symmetrical and I won't mess with those. Any suggestions or warnings?

I have a high ceiling. Does it make sense to hang them up and fill them with absorber material behind them? You know my room. Greetings from Kiel

Speaking of layers, is there any advantage to creating a panel with increasing layers of density? For example, rather than making a 6 inch fiberglass panel of one density, making a 6 inch panel using 2 inch thick layers of increasing density. Would this be advantageous either acoustically, or perhaps, in cost effect? Many thanks!

Hi Jesco, I have bass trapped my whole room (about 75% of the walls) with 16 cm stone wool bass traps similar to your bass trap course, including diffusors on about 25% of the walls. Almost ready to finally reopen my studio. Now I'm rethinking of where to do what in the room, in particular where to record the vocals. With so much deep bass trapping, I was wondering if there is any need for a 'vocal booth'? In my previous, less deep bass-trapped studio I had a spot where I had hung down some slabs of quite thin acoustic foam to trap high frequencies in front of the singer. I always doubted it did anything, but there must be a reason for the existence of (mobile) vocal (head) booths and such, so I went along with it. It cost very little to build but they did get in my way when I needed to cross the 2 meters from my recording desk to the mic after hitting record. Not good for the concentration of recording my own vocals. I never heard your opinion vocal booths, mobile or not, so I am assuming they're not needed or even useful if your room is treated well. Am I right?

How big is your room?

My room is an attic with 2 sloping roofs. The floor has a surface area of about 28 m2 or 300 square ft. There is a ceiling of about 7 m2 at 240 cm. Large enough for a home studio.
