There is no magic roofing system.
When it comes to keeping commercial properties water-tight... it's all in the details...
And the only way to get the details right is to blend knowledge and practice to produce a skilled result.
This week we're diving head first into the details of how to properly heat weld TPO roofing membrane.

Back in the late 90's I did a LOT of hand welding, in that day the material was Stevens or Sarnafeld, I did so much hand welding I became the crews Detail man booting up all the roof penetrations :) we did new Target construction and it would take us a month to do a roof providing the steel guys could stay ahead of us ( they got moved around a LOT ) 10,000 yo 14,000 sq. feet, it was a lot of fun and I got to see a lot of this country :)

@@advancedue476 Don't get me wrong I had a blast and plenty of memories, but as time wore on the handovers and not remembering how I got back to the motel or waking up in my coworkers bed in the room across the hall in my undies just got to be too much LOL, and the "party favors" ya might find on the road, Yea the memories of getting my check on Friday and being broke by Saturday night, having to live the week on my $105 per diem didn't make for such a good life. Glad I'm not young, dumb and full of cum anymore 😁😆 but your only in your 20's once right :)

"7 or 8" that varies a lot depending on if you are using a 10mm, 20mm, 40mm, etc tip. And thats just a regular Leister (s model?). Thats an older version. So different brands and models will vary in temperature ranges. Beyond that, i love this video. Love that you included using simple green and then immediately washing it off. Most forget that. WMC is always best on TPO. A test patch is always a great way to start your day, as different temperatures and even humidity can effect it a lot.

Welding tpo in ireland you need the new leister digital so you can show your temperatures also they want you using 20mm nosle not 40mm 2 20mm welds and always do a test patch with time date and setting of your welder so they don't need to cut a test section from your new roof

Can you weld the seams without making an airdam?
@robinhawkins335
@robinhawkins335 2 жыл бұрын
Not consistently and not without wrinkles. Robots use a mechanical dam and you could do the same with a heavy strip of __________ and a soft side to form over seam plates and inconsistencies in the substrate. Sounds like a pain in the ass that can easily be avoided by a mere pre-weld.

I’m not much of a lover of tpo couse of the seams once melt to much u can’t put it back down. But I know it’s couse excess of heat but I’m afraid not getting a good weld couse I like to see little bleed out on my seams anyway. Fabuloso 😂

I was taught to have a 3 inch pre weld all the way down the seam and then do your final weld. Does this over stress the membrane or is it actually more affective?
@gustavoandresflorezherrera2830
@gustavoandresflorezherrera2830 3 жыл бұрын
The idea of pre weld is to prevent wrinkles and have a straight and clean weld
@EricFapton
@EricFapton 2 жыл бұрын
Pre weld is to create a heat dam. So when you do you final weld your are trapping all the heat and getting a good weld.
@robinhawkins335
@robinhawkins335 2 жыл бұрын
A pre-weld is to creaeate an air dam its only other purpose is to lock the sheet in place so you don't push a wrinkle down the lap. A 3" weld is excessive a 3" pre-weld is ludicrous. Most single-ply systems have field manuals I suggest referencing them for specs so you avoid wasting your time on not necessary bullshit.
@robinhawkins335
@robinhawkins335 2 жыл бұрын
@@gustavoandresflorezherrera2830 Gustavo that is actually a benefit but not the reason for a pre-weld. An air dam is the reason.

Been doing tpo for many years, instead of a pre weld, we do a tack weld, a small quick weld around 3 to 4 inches in from the seam every 1 to 2 foot or so. Dont waste your time doing a pre weld.

Never trust the robot to get a solid weld depending on the model you use. Always have someone using a roller right behind the robot.

@@flaviuscouverturegmailcom I’ve was a heat welder for 15yrs and I can tell you nothing is wrong with a good robot. For some reason ppl think you have to roll behind the robot simply because they don’t have experience. Nothing is going to help it stick any better than setting up your robot with the correct temperature and speed. Most manufacturers require a robot on anything over 10ft. because hand welders are not as good as they think.

You don't have to clean the seems, the welder Will blow away dirt and burn away any "films" on the membrane.
