I've been eyeing a crock from a ceramic artist I follow but I haven't committed to it yet. I just use half gallon mason jars and cloth napkin. Mason jar fits better on my limited counter space. For flavors I like to use scraps from other projects. Skins from making jellied cranberry sauce. The pulp leftover from making raspberry jam. Skins from canning peaches. Sweet cherry pits. Pineapple cores. Mango seeds. These usually have enough fruit left on them to flavor the booch.

I just bottled my FIRST batch yesterday! I did strawberry with thyme, blueberry with maple syrup and orange with yellow plum. Everything came from my local farmers market except the oranges. I can definitely see why the crock with spigot would be easier🤦🤣. I had kombucha everywhere

I've gotten pretty good using a ladle and funnel to minimize the mess. I'm kind of interested how the "continuous brew" works. I do 6 pint bottles in a batch for the secondary ferment and brew all at once. Having a daily routine might work better. for me.

Hi Becky, I enjoy your videos so much. Although I do not know, or have in my country (Algeria) many of the things you cook or preserve, I find what you do quite interesting and captivating. I learn a lot from you along the way and I admire your lifestyle. We cook differently in my home country , yet I find your food appealing lol. You changed my view on the American lifestyle; in our society they think that women in The West or the Americas live a comfortable life they do not clean and cook.. etc. I will try to comment often and I hope you can consider your audience's lack of knowledge regarding some products, foods and labellings. Bonne soirée

I bought a 2 gallon glass drink jar at walmart for 12.99. I replaced the plastic spigot with a food safe one for 5 dollars. I started with 1 scoby and made a gallon batch and gradually increased to 2 gallons as the scoby grew. Now I make 2 gallons without a problem. I just drink the kombucha and replace what has been consumed 1 x per week. Thus I have a continuous supply of kombucha. No fuss. The entire set up was less than 20 dollars. It would be nice to have a stand though. Plus you need a scoby. If you have a friend with an extra scoby you can save yourself 10 dollars. I don’t flavor my kombucha. I just drink it as is. Can’t wait to see how the setup works out for you.

Do you have to keep this glass jar in a dark place? Not everyone has a spot to put it so maybe that’s why the crock comes in handy because it keeps it dark? Also as I think about it I wonder if the crack is better for the pressure and carbonation that kombucha can cause so that it doesn’t explode in the vessel? Is the jug you got pressure safe? I suppose it’s no different than the jars we use just thinking out loud :-)
@FMYR
@FMYR 3 жыл бұрын
@@MFaith777 I just leave it on my kitchen counter and I don’t keep it in a dark place. The container isn’t sealed so pressure doesn’t build up. It is just covered with a tea towel. I wish I could afford the crock. It looks nice but unfortunately I can’t so this works fine. Hope that helps!

Hey there! Huge fan of Kombucha here. I've made my own Kombucha in the past and all you need to start the process is the live culture. You can go to the grocery store and get one bottle of the original flavor of Kombucha from a large company $2-5 depending on where you live and throw the whole bottle in the sugur/tea mixture and in about 3-4 weeks you should have a nice thick scooby form on the top that you can transplant into the next batch. I used this method many times before we moved recently to purchase a home but once everything settles I'll be starting up again! I will say that using ceramic is definitely the safer option too because I have broken my glass jars from making the tea too hot to dissolve the sugar so definitely watch out for that! Good luck with whichever you decide!

@@noralacayo9127 thank you so much for that information. Now if I can find some in the grocery I'll be set. I used to make mine in a salad bowl. Just peel back the mushroom and dip out with a ladder. Just like punch.

So glad to know this helped! Again in the future I will probably upgrade to a ceramic pot like Becky but for the meantime you can get glass mason jars with the spickette from walmart for like $20 in the food entertainment area. Normally they are used to hold like lemonade or iced tea but they worked great for kombucha just be careful when dealing with hot water on cold glass as it can break and that is super not fun 😂 I used cheesecloth over the lid but I'm considering using 100% cotton flour bags next time since I found a local place they sell pretty cheap.

Yeah I actually wanted to ask; isn't that just the same idea? But it will cost you 20 dollars/euros vs. 300!!!! What really is the added benefit of this fancy bucha maker?? Because you could probably also just buy a separate heating thingy if that's really important to you that would also be around 30 USD - maybe even in an aquarium store or something like that? Summary: I don't understand this fancy Kombucha maker, it seems like you can just buy a glass version + cheap heater and have the same contraption for under 50 euros. Am I missing something?

I probably should've also invested in the continuous system. I probably would've committed better if I had. Kombucha Kamp is awesome! I love their site. Yerba Mate is drank often in place of coffee, as it has almost as much caffeine as coffee, but even more nutritional offerings. A continuous brew system is efficient if the family drinks kombucha all year. I found I really only want kombucha in spring and summer. In fall and winter, I want something like chai. I think you overpaid by a country mile. I have the same water crock from A'zon, $35. I hope this system solves you brew issue and your husband's digestive track heals quickly😉👍

Someday, in the back of your mind think about picking up a sewing machine. Not for making ball gowns or every day tees but fkr making "everyday linens", shower caps for your jars, swifter covers, kitchen towels, aprons even. I recommend an older mechanical with a frint load bobbin (handles more thickness but equally important more snarls and mistakes). There are some specific, older makes and models people lust for. Ask around, peek through the internet, do a little research then clear a corner in a room and keep your eye out; theyball come up at assorted prices but sell fast. You'll also need an ironing board, decent board cover, and an iron. Simply being able to turn fabric twice pressing along the way and stitch along the edge will get you reasonably far in th 3veryday linen world. - if you think out of the box, fabricnjs easy enough to come by at an "appropriate price".

I recently switched from kombucha to water kefir. One thing though with a continuous system your brew can become progressively more sour over time so you should clean it out and refresh every so often. How often will depend on how tart you like your drink. Pineapple or mandarin with ginger and/or mint. I am currently 2nd fermenting my kefir with pineapple and mint.

I bought the book your sister recommended. Enjoying learning. Very intrigued by the SCOBY candy recipe!! Not sure if I'm up for that. When I mentioned it to my daughter she reminded me that she had her placenta capsulized. LOL

As far as I am aware the scoby doesn't like any metal. I wonder how a non plastic spigot will work though. I don't use anything metal for mine. Like your videos and your content.

That's pretty cool, to just keep making it,I would however get a non plastic 304 grade spigot, which can be used for kombucha!
