I've been curious about acrylic gouache for a while now so I'm excited to finally get a chance to try it. I will be painting two scenes, each using a different gouache: Acrylic Gouache/Regular Gouache, and I'll be comparing the differences between them.
PS. I had trouble rendering the video at the very end so its kinda choppy, sorry!
Thanks for watching!

Holbein is expensive!! Hahah but omg the colours are so vibrant! Also, love your paintings! 🤩🤩

Thank you! They cost an arm and a leg, but I’ve found a 7x cheaper alternative, although the colors in the tubes aren’t as nice, you can mix your own colors, check out Reeves :)

$50 for the 18color 5ml tubes set isn’t bad, and $110 for the 24cor 15ml tube is great IMO, especially taking quality into consideration right?

I can't decide which I like better. I love the vibrancy and richness acrylic gouache can give. But I also love the translucency and mottled look you can get with traditional. They both have their places. 🎨

Totally agreed! I’ll just have to paint different subjects to highlight the specialties of each paint. Definitely will have to keep using the acrylic gouache so I can get better at using it :)

How about acrylic gouache vs regular acrylic . The main thing i want to know is why would i use one over the other, and the pros cons of each and of course the core discernment .

Correct me if I’m mistaken but so long as you get the water ratio correct with regular gouache then it’s able to achieve even, consistent coverage. . . I’m still learning but that’s worked for me really well. Especially when layering, additional layers you want to use less water for less reactivation of the previous layer (combined with less strokes on the page which will also lift up and reactivate previous layers) That being said this was a pretty good video, thanks :-) I’m stepping into professional grade gouache now and am choosing between these 2 options currently…..

Hey! Yes so in my experience I can get a pretty nice opaque and even coat using just regular gouache but like you said be careful of reactivating it. If you let it dry overnight I feel like it reactivates slower than if you just applied it for a few hours. Nice, I'm excited for you! What are the two gouaches you are considering?

@@DearElaine Holbein either the Acryl-Gouache or the Regular which is what I am leaning towards. I currently am using Arteza Gouache and it’s not terrible but it’s also not great. Have you used Arteza Gouache before ? I am really looking for opacity and a more matte finish

@@pantalonious3984 I haven't used Arteza before, I also know that Royal Talens gouache is another favorite that you could try, and Windsor newton has given me pretty good matte coverage too! But yeah if you really want the opacity then go for an acrylic gouache!

I'm so glad I came across your video! I wasn't quite sure which set of paints to go with. I agree, the acrylic paints do dry quickly and I found an artist's video that suggests using a wet-palette! :) The DIY is way easier than having to buy one (unless if you want to!). If anyone is interested, feel free to reach out (not sure if I can post a link here ^^). Take care!

thanks Seera! I found out about that recently too! I used wet parchment paper on top of a damp sponge- it kept my acrylic gouache wet for 10x longer XD

Can you layer regular gouache on top of acrylic gouache?
@DearElaine
@DearElaine 7 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend it, I've tried it but since acrylic gouache leaves a "water resistant-like" plasticy surface, if you water down the regular gouache, it kind of sits on it or beads :/

Yes, you can, I should have specified that you can thin acrylic paint with up to 30% of water. I just prefer not thinning and changing the binding properties in the paint.
