Step by step guide to creating a painting of an abstract flower in acrylic pouring technique with the use of a paper napkin.
From the video you’ll see that it’s not very hard.
I will clarify the main points about the choice of napkin, canvas and paint dilution.
When I was looking for napkins I noticed that usually there are only two types of napkins on sail: “small” and “big”. Big are the ones that are 33 by 33 centimeters when laid out.
If you use the 20×20 cm canvas (like I did in the video) or 25×25 cm you need to use the “big” napkin, because the “small” one won’t cover the entire canvas.
Napkins can have one or several layers. For some reason most stores sell the 3-ply ones. However it’s not a problem, because you can easily detach the layers from one another and turn those napkins into 1-ply ones (I showed how to do that in the video).
You can use the 3-ply napkin, but I think it’s inconvenient.
For this technique it’s better to use a smaller canvas, 20×20 cm or 25×25 cm. Buying an already primed canvas will make the process easier. The canvas should be primed with an ACRYLIC primer.
For this painting I used the following paints:
- acrylic paint FLUORESCENT “Decola” - Carmine. For this painting I used about 20ml. I call it “pink”. Not sure if I’m right, but that’s how I see it.
- acrylic paint FLUORESCENT “Decola” - White. I used about 10ml.
- acrylic paint “Sonnet” - Black (code 810). I used about 50ml (for the base and the picture itself).
- acrylic paint “Sonnet” - Titanium White (code 101). I used about 20ml.
Paint dilution:
- pink fluorescent, white fluorescent and white regular paint I usually dilute with PVA glue and water ONLY. Proportions are one part paint, one part PVA glue and half part water. You’ll probably need more water though. If you have the scales, then it is more convenient to dose everything on them.
20g pink paint, 20g PVA glue, 5g water.
10g white fluorescent paint, 10g PVA glue, 5g water.
20g white regular paint, 20g PVA glue, 10g water.
- black paint I dilute with PVA glue and acrylic varnish or acrylic paint thinner.
1 part paint, half part varnish, half part PVA glue, half part water.
50g paint, 25g thinner (acrylic varnish), 25g PVA glue, 25g water.
I used regular acrylic varnish from hardware store. “For walls and ceilings”, Alpina, glossy.
