ACT English comma rules can be confusing. They're actually not that hard. The reason most students (like myself) find/found them hard is because of the way they're taught (or not taught...). Comma rules, clause rules, and such English grammar essentials TAUGHT in a confusing, seemingly-contradicting way.
This short, 8-minute guide serves to make the learning process easier. There really are just a few BASIC concepts to this, and once those concepts are mastered, you're going to be WAY better at the English exam. Most grammar questions boil down to these basics, so knowing them is a powerful advantage!

I’m kinda confused on whether or not to put a comma before a dependent clause at the end of a sentence because some people say that you shouldn’t.
@therisenwizard8594
@therisenwizard8594 2 жыл бұрын
i dont think you need the comma before the dependent clause if it is at the end of the sentence.

The sentence it is raining outside even though it is cold. My English teacher taught me that this sentence does not need a comma, but in your video, you said it does. I am having contradictory advice
@greenapple6404
@greenapple6404 3 жыл бұрын
The last part of that sentence is a dependent clause lacking a subject. " Even though It is cold " cannot stand on its own. It sounds nice to the ear but according to ACT (which is what we need to base our rules off of) sounding nice is standardized English.

You could write it without and it would be OK in conversational English, but the most-correct, most-technical way of writing it is with a comma.

@@5Academy is it like this for all sentences in this context? For example, she read a story, well I laughed. Does the sentence need to, or no? Sorry, I am just a little confused.

Is "which" a subordinate conjunction in the last example? Also, can "which" ever be the subject of the sentence?

Thank you for your help! My prep teacher was talking about independent clauses and I was like I'm a published author and an AP Lang student and I have no idea what that is XD

Will the ACT test us a lot on the last example you did in the video?
@greenapple6404

Yes. It is a standardized test so they all generally test 1 group of concepts worded in weird ways.

This definitely helps me understand the clauses better, but, what does this help with on the ACT? I am not quite understanding.

Basically if you can identify independent and dependent clauses, you can figure out where commas go. A comma will always fit between a dependent and independent clause. He should have said it outright but that’s what I got from the patterns in the video.

English PhD and ACT/SAT prep coach speaking: you have two major errors early on in your discussion that could lead to students getting answers wrong. First off, your first two examples of dependent clauses are actually sentence fragments. Fragments are phrases, not clauses, and the comma rules for phrases depend on the type of phrase you are working with. Clauses always have a subject and a verb, but dependent clauses always begin with a subordinating conjunction. This brings us to your second major error: your "independent, dependent" clause example should not have a comma separating the two. A sentence containing an independent clause and a dependent clause is called a complex sentence. The only time that you use a comma in a complex sentence is if the sentence begins with a dependent clause, and a comma will always follow this clause. Complex sentences that begin with an independent clause do not feature a comma separating the two. If students use the explanation you give here, they will answer several questions wrong because you gave them the wrong information.
