Original Video: • Jung Kook - 'Let There...
----------------------------------------
Jeon Jung-kook, known as Jungkook, is a talented singer from South Korea. Born on September 1, 1997, in Busan, South Korea, he's a member and vocalist of the globally popular boy band BTS. Jungkook has performed three solo songs as part of BTS' discography, including "Begin" in 2016, "Euphoria" in 2018, and "My Time" in 2020, all of which charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart. He also recorded the soundtrack song "Stay Alive" for the BTS-based webtoon 7Fates: Chakho.
In 2022, he featured on American singer-songwriter Charlie Puth's single "Left and Right", which peaked at number 22 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Later that year, he became the first South Korean artist to release an official song for the FIFA World Cup soundtrack with "Dreamers", which he subsequently performed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony. Jungkook's solo singles have also seen success on streaming platforms, with "Stay Alive", "Left and Right", and "Dreamers" each breaking the record for the highest-debuting song by a Korean soloist on the Spotify Global chart.
Jungkook's journey to stardom started when he auditioned for the South Korean talent show Superstar K. Although he wasn't selected, he received casting offers from seven entertainment companies. He chose to become a trainee under Big Hit Entertainment after being inspired by RM, now his fellow band member and leader in BTS. He's been active in the music industry since 2013 and has made significant contributions to BTS' success.
Apart from his music career, Jungkook is also known for his philanthropic activities. In April 2023, he donated ₩1 billion (US$874,164.08) to Seoul National University Children's Hospital for the treatment expenses of patients from low-income families and the hospital's integrated care center.

He is still ill, poor guy! He said it went to his sinuses. Still has nasty cough too. Yet, he gave us his all! That's our JK! He also was worried because he was having a hard time breathing, he also felt his voice changed because of his sinuses. Love this man.

JK has been sick (cough and cold) during the whole promotion (about a week) so he was a bit stressed out about his voice but he tried singing/performing the best he can. He said so in one of his livestreams. He is such a professional. For one JK is a very emotive/expressive singer. This is his first time promoting by himself and he is not used to not having his fans around when he performs. I think saying “thank you” at the end does not signify that he was only putting up an act while he is singing. That is not a fair judgement of how he is as a singer. He was just trying to keep the atmosphere light probably to make himself more comfortable.

It´s just his personality shining through. Even though he has immense sincerity towards music he´s also just a very fun and playful person - but the thing is that´s something ARMY know but outsiders don´t...His critique came from a professional actors honest perspective on his "performance" ...he was talking more about how JK used his voice and expression to invoke feelings not particularly him as a singer and his singing ability. In that context (especially bc. JK is a total stranger to him) it did´t come across for me as unfair at all...just as an observation by an outsider who is even influenced by some negative K-pop rumours (which is not his fault that he associates BTS with it bc that´s just the medias narrative...)

BTS was lucky that they had a company that didn't enforce all the stringent rules that some K-Pops endured. They write their own lyrics, produce, compose, and have a lot of input in their performances, live and for MVs. They are so talented, have such great personalities, and yes, they can all act. Infact, some have college degrees for that. Regardless, they are so inspirational and love their fans (called ARMY). Don't worry about him holding a note. He can! You'll be amazed when you see them sign and dance at the same time. He probably couldn't hold it that day because he was sick. Hope to see more BTS reactions. I enjoyed your reaction! 💜💜

I think he was a bit shy at the end. It was live on the radio, so we only had his voice at first. When he covers a song, he always looks up the lyrics and choses ones he connects to. You should hear him sing and talk to us from his living room for hours. Most lovely.

I understand your reaction, yet allow me to give some insight. JK left Korea two weeks ago to debut in NY. He was sick and had visited the hospital before departing. The writers’ strike removed late-night shows, their usual means of promotion. He opted for radio interviews instead. GMA booked him for their Summer Concert Series, but upon arrival for sound check, they rushed him to pre-tape his performance due to weather concerns. Fighting a cold, he performs live minus sound check. He got it done, but not to his normal standards. Six days ago, he flew to London, and two days later performed this song. I’m sure he was exhausted but relieved that his voice held up. Jungkook is a perfectionist, and this was his solo debut, filled with numerous bad breaks. He’s also a seasoned pro who understands how to give a decent performance no matter the circumstances. Not trying to make excuses here, life happens. He did his best; I respect that and eagerly wait for the day when he performs at 100% again. Hope you do also.

This was a cover of a song by Oasis from, I think, 2005. Jung Kook is an amazing vocalist, and he performed this and actually his whole solo debut both in the U.S. and UK while sick with a really bad cold. He's singing in English, but his native language is Korean, and he can also sing in Japanese as all the BTS members can. I thought this was absolutely beautiful and I do believe he was feeling those words or he wouldn't have picked that song to do. He also performed his own song, Seven. I think BBC Radio asks all the artists that perform to also do a cover song, and that is what he picked. When I first clicked on this and it said acting coach, I thought you picked the wrong song since he also just put out a music video called SEVEN on July 14th which shows him acting.

Wow this is so INTERESTING hearing the perspective of an actor on this! Amazing reaction thank you!!😍 I hope you´ll continue your BTS reactions they are really an awesome group of artists on every level 💜💜💜 (- and this K-pop narrative you were talking about in the beginning doesn´t apply to them at all by the way which is a big reason for why they are where they are at now....actually they are one of the most genuine and art-wise also the most heavily involved musicans out there if you ask me...sadly this just didn´t yet translate into western media that portray them in a very different light) Edit: Also I think your critique in the end about him jumping out of character too suddenly is definitely valid and interesting coming from your perspective as an actor...ARMY would have never seen his emotional delivery as fabricated because we of course know his personality and behaviors, everyday body language, the way he gets immersed in music one moment and then all of a sudden he breaks out into dancing, joking and laughing, etc😂 ... but very interesting to hear this from an outsiders view...!

Super interesting take on this reaction. I think you'd be really interested in reacting to BTS from an acting perspective. Their music videos almost always tell a story, and they have all been trained in acting and performance, in addition to vocals and dancing. In fact, they have an entire side fictional story that runs through multiple videos, short films, etc. called the "Bangtan Universe" - the songs for the music videos are about one thing, but there are elements throughout the videos that add to the Bangtan Universe storyline. One of JK's strengths as a singer is his ability to adapt to the needs of each song that he sings. What's interesting is that originally his dancing wasn't emotional enough and his lable, Big Hit, sent him to the US for intensive training to see if they could get him where they wanted him to be. It worked. 🙂 I would caution against judgment of an entire industry based on whatever stereotypes, rumors, or judgments that you have heard about. BTS's label gives them much more freedom than a lot of agencies do with their artists. They definitely worked very hard, and they have an inspirational story of hardship as well, but "evil K-Pop" isn't really a label that you can put on their story.

Thank you for your reaction. I truly love this rendition of Oasis's song. If I may, I would offer thoughts on your last comments about his little salute and smile at the end. We've been watching JK grow for over 10 years now - he joined BTS when he was 15 years old. He is amazing, bold and charismatic on stage, but often shy off stage, with a bit of embarrassment when he is the center of attention. He often has to be pulled to the forefront by his BTS members, as he would happily let them handle the press and publicity, etc. He seems most comfortable around the other members and ARMY, their fan base. With this in mind, the 'change' at the end of the song was just JK coming out of his emotions when singing the song, and that split second realization that he was being focused on. I would bet my love for BTS on the fact that he felt that song very deeply. He always does. Please know that what you saw while he was singing was very sincere and heartfelt. I would really love to see some more reactions of BTS, either their group or solo works. Have a great day.

I understand the caution after hearing bad things surrounding the KPOP industry but BTS is set apart from that, they were never under "slave contracts" or overworked or any horror stories like that. BTS have had creative control over their careers for ten years now, they write and produce and have a massive say in everything they do. So don't worry about the KPOP horror stories when it comes to BTS, they're very different 😊💜

Jungkook is a very sincere and authentic singer 💜 I think he was conveying his honest feelings while singing the song, but at the same time felt relief after it was over. English is not JK’s 1st or even 2nd language, yet he had to sing it live for the first time in a small studio with many ppl watching him. He was also sick and nervous that he wouldn’t be able to do justice to the song. But I agree that it would’ve been nice if he had kept that emotion all the way to the very end. Good feedback 👍

Jung Kook is indeed a member of BTS.. He recently released his first official solo track called Seven. He had a short promotional period. He opened up the GMS Summer Concert Series but due to severe weather he had to do a taping of what would have been his stage practice and they broadcasted that instead of the live performance that was supposed to happen. Then he went to London. He performed Seven and this song which is a cover of an Oasis song on BBC Live Lounge. This is their format-an original song and then a cover. The next day he performed outside in front of fans for BBC One Live. Seven has a music video, a performance video and a dance practice video if you want to check it out.

I would say the vast majority of viewers for a radio performance would not be people freshly exposed to Jungkook. While you are correct about carrying the emotions of a cover to the very end, I think Jungkook who has a history of being very playful using the last second or two of filming to acknowledge his fanbase is unsurprising. He has a long record of putting out free covers on Soundcloud and of covering songs on live chats in front of millions of viewers not to mention his work as lead singer in BTS. That he can turn on or turn off "acting" performance on a dime conveying an emotional interpretation of a tune allows people to make connections much like with visual actors. You are right but I think there is a backstory worth considering.

The horror stories also known as 'the dark side of kpop' are overblown. A lot of artists struggle to get popular in Korea. They train from young age and work a lot because the market is competitive and the contracts are not always fair. Still, the US labels are not much better, they're just better at hiding their mistreatement of artists. Although in recent years we see some changes in artists speaking up, both in Korea and US. When it comes to BTS, they had it rough but they grew with their agency and have been treated fair according to the members. They even received some shares in the agency due to their impact. They have re signed their contracts and they often mention how supportive the agency is. Either way, you said you didin't know much about kpop. There are lots of documentaries on youtube that discuss kpop. Although BTS fans would argue BTS is beyond kpop, and given their popularity, production & writing of songs and general authenticity, they are an anomaly in the industry. And yes, JK dropped the character because he embodies the songs he sings and then shows his real self. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. He is a performer after all.

BTS and it's members are different they have Creative freedom something that it not the norm in Kpop. They do as they want and write, compose and produce they are all extremely talented and hard working. They've had done from the start. They are all solo artist in their own right so when doing group work they are The Super Group. They even have shares in their company as they took a company that was on the edge of being bankrupt to the biggest Kpop company that's bigger now the whole of Kpop. Creative freedom and having to find their own way outside of the normal route for kpop Idol's are the reason they are A1 global A Listers. Jungkook is the youngest member 2 members are already doing their military service one of whom had a solo record breaking concert at lollapalooza where he's the only act ever to sell just over 120,000 tickets and a live stream of his concert worldwide. Suga is the only Rapper worldwide to sell over 1million Physical copies of his Album called D-Day on it's release day and complete a solo Tour of the US grossing over 30million US dollars. Jimin is the only Solo South korean Arts to debute at Number 1 on the US Billboard Charts. As group they have 6 number 1's on the Billboard Charts they've beaten the Beatltes record in have 3 top Album on the USA Charts in less than a year. They have 5 Grammy nominations and are they most award group in music history. They as each member finishes their solo work they'll then do their military service once they've all completed their military service (they have to do 18months) they'll be back as a group. They are so influential that South Korean politicans were agreeing they should be except from military service due to the fact they are now concerned for the pension fund as they put more into the South Korean economy than the whole of the kpop Industry and more than Samsung.

Boy you have a lot of assumptions about K-Pop that really don't apply to BTS. But, nevertheless, this was a recent appearance at BBC last week while Jungkook was promoting his new solo release, Seven. Because I am huge Fan (ARMY) of BTS I know a little about them that you probably don't. I agree that JK was singing from the heart and authentically. I think is brought up a lot of personal pain for him that is not resolved. That is why he ended the song so abruptly - not because that's how they do it in K-Pop. I'm not sure what kind of music you like, but I would like to recommend you give BTS a try. I promise you they are not K-Pop. More like K-Hip Hop. They are beloved for their deep and meaningful lyrics, world-class raps, beautiful R & B, and a few Pop songs that were feel good songs released during Covid (Butter, Dynamite, Permission to Dance). These are not really reflective of what and who BTS is and does. Good luck and live on to learn another day!

0:27 here is one major thing you should avoid doing. Please don't group bts with other kpop groups. The entire reason they succeeded is because they broke industry standard and wrote about their own struggles very vividly in their music. Their band motto is to "shield youth from the bullets of society" and their company was founded on the idea of 'music and artist for healing'. I hope you give their korean music a chance. They are incredibly deep and poetic and talks about real life and growth of humans in such a descriptive manner in their lyrics... here are some major songs from their albums: black swan, love Yourself answer, butterfly, house of cards, outro tear. 6:50 Very interesting to hear that. I understand it completely.... for fans, we had a different view of it, the fans are usually very aware of the goofy behaviour of members off stage cus we watch a lot of behind the scenes content and so that moment where he broke character was like "the person singing is jungkook".

Jungkook was actually not well during this performance. He had a cold and still performed incredibly. He even said in a live he had trouble keeping his breath. He is an ultimate professional and no matter how he feels, he always thinks of Army (fans). He is the main vocalist for BTS. JK also does the background vocals and adlibs. He is extremely talented. If you want to really hear K-pop I recommend you listen to Idol, Mic drop, Kinetic Manifesto, If you want to hear Jungkook I would suggest his live of Euphoria,Begin or Still with you. If you watched FIFA Jungkook was the headliner and did Dreamers

While I think having the opinion that talking before the instrumental has ended is not ideal is completely fair. I do think doubting his sincerity just for saying "thank you" a little too early(in your opinion) after you have spent most of the song taking note of how sincere he is, is quite unfair. Jungkook is an extremely sincere guy. ARMY/fans/public has watched him grow for 10 years now. He goes live any time of the day(mostly at night) and spends hours there singing for us and talking. Every cover he has done, and every song he has performed, he has taken the time to learn and understand it on a deeper level. He has those little vlogs(GCF), and he has said himself he takes great care in choosing his songs. You wouldn't know it from his person, but you did see it in his performance. Commented on it multiple times in fact. Honestly, I have watched a few of your reactions, Hua Chenyu is my favorite performer and I loved your reactions to him in particular. You seem like such an emotionally aware and intelligent guy. I just find it sad that you would disregard my favorite singer's sincerity so fast. It felt like you came into this with prejudice. K-pop is just as nuanced as the American industry. A lot of money and trash involved. But there are real artists out there, and gems hidden in the dirt. BTS(Jungkooks group) was 7 gems hidden. They are a special case in everything. Discriminated against in any music industry or media(K-pop, Korean media, American media, and music industry) because of their unique road to fame. But they keep staying true to themself and their music and are extremely sincere and honest. It might be a different style and way of life/music than what you are used to. But it doesn't make it mean any less.

I was just glancing at comments while I have a few minutes but am in a hurry so I read the first paragraph and skimmed the rest but wanted to respond because I hope to help you understand that my comments were and often are coming from a place of offering good practices for performers who might be listening to me. I don't doubt his sincerity when I focus on it alone, but the point I make is valid in that, by breaking character so quickly and easily can have the effect of making the audience feel that they were duped rather than a shared member in a sincere moment. Another artist that does this exact thing A LOT is Demi Lovato. When she sings songs that are very personal to her she has a habit of jumping out of them very quickly at the end like this. She does it, I think, because they speak to a very vulnerable place and that makes her uncomfortable, and with context I don't doubt her sincerity during the performances. But, like with this one, bouncing out of such an emotional performance that quickly can be jarring for an audience. I hope this clears up my intention. Thanks for the comment!

It baffles me when a reactor hasn't got the slightest clue about the singer, their story or even the origin of the song and has the audacity to behave like he knows what he is talking about in this context. Jungkook lives and breathes music, he is known to cover songs that put new life into them with his emotional renditions. Those who know JK know its in his blood...his singing and feeling a song while performing is not "an act" just because he smiled and gave a salute at the end!! He is the most natural, humble and unpretentious man in the music industry and his millions of adoring fans know it.

Really interesting point! Don't disagree perhaps but I'm going to give Jung Kook some credit on this one since this is his first time in 10 years doing promotions without his bandmates/like brothers, he's singing in his 3rd language, a song that came out on the other side of the world when he was a toddler, and while he was sick. And it still came across good. (Kind of like the BTS Grammy performance last year when Jung Kook & j-hope just got out of Covid quarantine, Jin had his hand injury all bandaged up and they still crushed it.) Anyway, you might try the other song Jung Kook performed on BBC Live. Totally different vibe! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ2VfsqY0-CshYk.html. And as anyone with tell you about BTS they have 300+ songs in their discography across many genres so chances are if you have preconceived notions about "boy bands" or about K-pop or about the type of music BTS does, you'll likely be very surprised if you keep exploring. You'll never regret it. Thanks for the reactions! (Oh by the way, Jin was studying acting before BTS' label snatched him off the street, V used to double duty as an actor in a K-drama while in BTS, and Suga makes such interesting movie-like videos with his title tracks using his Agust D moniker, they've tried to recruit him to be an actor....so am sure you'll have lots to say on any BTS reaction!)

Good criticism. Jungkook is used to jumping in and out of character after a performance. I too felt he should have kept in character a little longer and let the song end and then transition out of it to his normal behaviour. Just a slight criticism and perhaps something for him to keep in mind for future performances. He's fully capable of staying in character but he's also not used to having all eyes on him for an entire performance so that's something to consider.
