The tone of this movie felt very realistic when it got released because at that time Malayalam cinema had just begun to explore the so-called realistic genre, and the hero was perceived as an ideal real cop, but nowadays I have heard people criticizing the glorification of police brutality in the movie.

Watch it in 2022, I'm sure you will realize the bad themes. . Glorification of police brutality, encourages the police to be above the law because he settles issues in the station and threatens the parties involved. In one scene he makes fun of a man for his lack of "manliness", he makes inappropriate jokes about guys caught without a helmet. So so many issues. Jimmy's friend Nona covered all the issues in detail

@@SF-li9khthis is the problem , people are getting too offended nowadays , jokes are meant to be offensive and that film is a pure comedy film , I don't think it aims to glorify anything, it tries to entertain

@@SF-li9khthis is addressed in the film itself. U can't expect the culprits to tell u the truth if u behave nicely. Sometimes there is no other choice. Compelled to use brute force. Our justice demands evidence. The police may know how a murder happened but it's not enough.

People say this movie was realistic because it is different from other police movies released in India. Usually police movies will have investigation of a single case or a powerful and corrupt villain to take down, but in this movie it follows his daily routine and different cases he faces daily.

I recently went to a police station for a personal matter and stayed about an hour interacting with the officials over there. I was observing the day today activities over there, how the officials interact among themselves, way they were behaving to people who came for solution to various matters. While returning from the station, I surprisingly realised that what I saw in police station in AHB movie is similar to that of my experience in the police station :)

Up until this movie, Nivin Pauly was just a teenage icon. Afterwards he became the favorite actor of every single malayali uncle🤣🤣 That was the effect this movie had on us! Unfortunately, Jimmy, I dont think they meant this as a satire at all, because everyone at the time did say this was very realistic and even justified officer Biju's actions as the right thing to do. I also (sadly) admit to really liking this movie at the time and remember getting shit scared when those teenagers were caught with weed and they dragged that scene on and on, calling their mothers to the police station and all ( I was a teenager at the time, and I made up my mind I wouldnt ever even try smoking normal cigarettes because of this scene😅) Anyways, as for this song, I dont think even this was satirical, I mean, the lyrics are in malayalam, but the usage of some words (that no one actually uses nowadays) almost feel like sanskrit and when you read the lyrics knowing that it almost feels like a centuries old hymn singing praises to a god or something..atleast that's my interpretation (think of it like if Ezekiel 17:25 was a background score for whenever Samuel Jackson's character appeared in pulp fiction((I hope you get the idea))) Edit: just did a background check, apparently the lyrics ARE in sanskrit, not malayalam.

Some scenes in this movie is extremely racial and was criticized by media and people.. The usage of words like " born criminal" against the culprit also a result of deeply permeated indian upper class public consciousness..I many parts of the country people from certain caste are by default considered trouble makers or criminals.. Even after 75 yrs of indian independence.. They are unpriviliged in the eyes of upper class people.. Most of the 80/90 malayalam films also routed and showcase this same sense in many ways..

Exactly. This is just like saying in the USA, black people are born criminals. Nobody is a born criminal. So I'm with the critics too

Policing and parenting follow very different styles in the east and the west. Can't judge any style. High incarceration rates does not solve crimes and is very expensive.

Am surprised how you did not get the tone and tenor of this movie and hence confused. There are around 15 cases they touch upon in this movie. And all the cases are handled with deftness. Some of the cases moves tears in our eyes, especially that of the father and daughter. Also the way he handles the drug case is one of the extraordinary rendition in Indian cinema, done so realistically and meaningfully. I for sure felt the movie has its perfect moments through out. Its satirical, profound and entertaining. Also there is no brutality as such, as you mentioned, its just that the way in which they have shown while dealing with criminals, who otherwise cannot be handled well. And neither he is obsessed with his work, its just that he is trying to be just in his working towards his service to the department. I felt you have misquoted few aspects of this movie, which differs in its actual intent and presentation.

The culture divide is so great that the west is not really able to understand this. As a person from Kerala, let me explain. The police force in Kerala has proved to be extremely effective in policing and protecting the community. It's because of the strong political alliance with the ruling party, and the educated and dedicated cops. The police has guns, but they very, very, very rarely use them in Kerala. Unfortunately, Kerala has a drug crisis and lots of petty criminals. The police has risen to the task, but it does require a certain level of brutality. It's also accepted by the society. If you act with respect, you're treated with respect MOST of the time. In fact, I would say that for a developing country, Kerala has really polite police force. There are, of course, arrogent people everywhere who are selfish and close minded, but the majority of the force is good, as was exemplified during the COVID pandemic. Kerala was the only state in India that didn't face severe consequences. If such effective policing didn't exist, we would've faced crisis similar to many African countries.
