Sadly, it's often an issue of the right place at the right time, and for this movie, it was the wrong time and place. Yeah, I don't know anyone who saw this and didn't love it, but it did poorly at the box office, which more often than not means no sequels.
@christophersmyth1908
@christophersmyth1908 5 ай бұрын
It probably didn't help any that for reasons I'm unsure of...after principal photography was finished on the film it was shelved for 2 or 3 years before it was actually released and even then the studio barely did any marketing for its release which will usually tank a movie anyways.

@@christophersmyth1908 Yeah, that's usually a distribution issue. They couldn't sell it to anyone at the time and as you said, the studio marketed it poorly.

@@chrislaustin Yeah, there were a lot of great action movies that came out in 1988. Die Hard is the obvious one. There was also Red Heat with Arnold, Rambo 3, Above The Law, Bloodsport, Naked Gun, and many others. That is really hard to compete with. As someone below mentioned, the film was marketed poorly.

"How do you like your ribs?" RIP Carl Weathers! Fun Fact: Theatrical directing debut of Craig R. Baxley. Casting Notes Fact: Predator (1987) cast Bill Duke and Sonny Landham also appear in this film. Tom Wilson and Mary Ellen Trainor both appeared the following year in Back To The Future Part II (1989). Box Office Success Fact: The studio hoped to turn the film into a franchise, but it never happened. Dangerous Passion (1990), a totally unrelated film which also starred Carl Weathers, was re-titled 'Action Jackson 2' in some countries. Carl Weathers also headlined another action-thriller Hurricane Smith (1992). Genesis Fact: Carl Weathers came up with the idea for the film on the set of Predator (1987), during conversations with producer Joel Silver about their shared love of 1970s blaxploitation films. The title was born after Weathers spoke to an Australian crew member about the project. To indicate his interest in working on the film, the crew member said: "I'm in like Action Jackson." Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The sports car at the mansion is a red 1986 or 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT coupé with body effects that make it resemble a Ferrari Testarossa coupé. The color, make and model of Action Jackson's (Carl Weathers) car that gets wrecked, as also stated in dialogue in the movie, is a brown and white 1966 Chevrolet (aka Chevy) Impala convertible. In other shots in the film, one can also see a blue 1981 Chevrolet Impala police sedan and a creme 1974 Chevrolet Impala Custom coupé.

It's like the supporting cast from Lethal Weapon and Die Hard went straight to the Action Jackson set. It's a never ending who's who of 80's bit parters and snd daytime players. It's like a lost Joel Silver drug fueled 80's shoot em' up summer action blockbuster. Carl Weathers said they came up with the whole concept of Action Jackson while BSing on the Predator set in the jungle. He said Shane Black coined the term Action Jackson. Carl told Black that it actually didn't rhyme. Shane said use it as a working title till you think of something better. Weathers laughed saying none of them did. RIP OG Creed

@@athens_1psvr31 the studio that put out the movie was sold to Sony. Critics were mixed in reviews. The movie made 12 times it's budget. It ended up in WB's library along with the distribution rights. Weathers wanted a sequel, we the viewers wanted a sequel. WB chose not to do it. Action Jackson was originally an action figure by Mego toys. Producer Joel Silver (Lethal Weapon, 2 of the Die Hard films, Road House) kicked out some money to have the name be used. After The Rocky saga & Predator, this was definitely C.W.'s action hero moment (first leading role). The title and the story alone was killer. The cast, the action, the humor and the one-liners are just perfect. Weathers wanted a franchise out of this and the movie did well enough at the box office. Michael Kamen & Herbie Hancock with the music, very good. The soundtrack is totally underrated, but still kinda hot to hear. I was age 8 and the only way I could watch A.J. was with my father, so my mom never knew I saw something Rated-R (good times). RIP to 6 of the actors in this classic including the Incomparable Carl Weathers. 80's cheese at it's finest and no way in the world you count out this one. You gotta watch Craig R. Baxley's other classics, I Come In Peace and Stone Cold, both on B-movie overload.

Some back round on this film for you guys. If you pay attention through this film, you’ll notice that not only does it have the look and vibe of Lethal Weapon, but MANY of the same actors as well. I can’t remember the details, but they wanted to create a series of films with a black action hero. It was either the studio or Carl, I think it was Carl that loved LW so much that they hired like the whole crew. Anyway, the story is on the internet in detail, but that’s why the films is so much better than it should be for that weak script. Action was amazing, actors awesome and resembles a hit film of the day. But Carl carried the whole thing. Love this movie. 😊
