When it comes to the Marine Corps, everyone always thinks ACTIVE DUTY like its the only thing we offer, wellll---Today we will be discussing the similarities and differences between the Marine Corps Active Duty (FULL TIME) and Reserve Programs (PART TIME)
So If you are considering joining the Marine Corps, it is important to understand the differences so you can make an informed decision for the type of lifestyle you want to live. Let’s go!
Similarities:
1. Boot Camp: The first similarity between active duty and reserve programs is that both require completion of boot camp AND it is the same for both programs and provides the necessary skills to become a Marine. (There are no differences)
2. The Marine TITLE: Regardless of which route you take, at the end of the day you are still a United States Marine and will be treated with the utmost respect whether you’re active or reserves.
3. Military discipline: Both active duty and reserve Marines are subject to military discipline and must adhere to the same standards and regulations.
4. Deployment: Active duty and reserve Marines can both be deployed overseas to support military operations, however reserves have more say depending on civilian commitments etc unlike active duty.
5. Training and career advancement: Finally, both active duty and reserve Marines have access to the same training and career advancement opportunities including MOS school. This allows Marines in either program to advance their skills and career goals. Note: promotions on the reserve side are different and DO take longer due to a lesser commitment than their active duty counterparts.
Differences:
1. Full-time commitment: The main difference between active duty and reserve programs is the full-time commitment. Active duty Marines serve full-time, while reserve Marines serve part-time and are able to maintain civilian careers. This allows tremendous flexibility to reserve Marines to go to school full time or have a full time civilian career.
2. Pay and Benefits: Active duty Marines receive full time pay and benefits where as reserve Marines only get paid when they’re working *one weekend per month/two weeks in the summer) HOWEVER, reserve Marines can volunteer to go on active duty orders and THEN receive full pay and benefits.
3. Length of service: Active duty Marines serve for a minimum of four years, while reserve Marines serve for a minimum of six years.
4. Training requirements: Reserve Marines are required to complete regular training and participate in monthly drills and exercises in order to maintain readiness. Active duty Marines receive continuous training and are always ready for deployment.
5. Deployment frequency: Active duty Marines are more likely to be deployed overseas, while reserve Marines are typically only deployed during times of high demand and its “technically” optional under certain circumstances.
6. Duty Stations: Reservist are guaranteed to be stationed where they enlisted from. For instance, if you enlist out of San Diego California, you will either work out of Camp Pendleton or Miramar. No surprises .This means they get to be local with friends and family and DON’T have to change duty stations regularly like their active duty counterparts . BEST PART is that if you decide to move, your job moves with you to your new state or city.
So at the end of the day, it’s ultimately dependent on the type of lifestyle you want to live and commitment you want to make.
Do you want full pay and benefits? Go active.
Do you prefer more flexibility and have a separate plan/career? Go reserves.
Either way you’re still a United States Marine and that’s what truly counts!
