Since the end of World War II, half a million children have been adopted from abroad by American families. But at least 50 have been deported since 2000, according to the nonprofit Adoptees for Justice. The new film "Blue Bayou" highlights this pressing issue. Written, directed by and starring former "Twilight" actor Justin Chon, the film follows a Korean-born adoptee fighting for the only life he’s ever known. Chon speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about the Asian-American experience and representation in Hollywood.
Originally aired on September 20, 2021.

Justin Chon has always done a great job repping Asian Americans. He's absolutely right about Asian Americans not getting enough chances to become marketable and I think writing our own stories and making our own films like he did is the only way this will change. He should do a workshop or something to show us how he did it.

Bravo, Justin for this movie! We just watched last night and were so impressed by the story, acting and the direction, which was clear and present! It also tells a story of fathers’ love, both from Justin’s roll and Ace, the biological father. It was very real and heartbreaking. I was not aware of this issue and felt shameful. Something needs to be done. Well done! We need more voices like you in Hollywood!

This is totally ludicrous - DO NOT blame the adopted child! These individuals MUST be given citizenship immediately! Put in the paper work and have it immediately granted. They MUST NOT be shipped overseas.

Watched this movie. A gut-wrenching brilliantly acted movie. Chon and Vikander and the little girl who plays the daughter are so good, you believe the love in this relationship. Such an important movie to see for people to understand what illegal immigrants have to go through.

I like how he presented the father cop to stand for justice & truth in the end & I think that's important to bring into focus that there is good & bad & we just need to go in looking for the gold. So proud of you Justin Chon

I've just watched the film and it was heartbreaking. How can people who have lived their whole life in a country be sent to another country, even if they were born there?

min 9:00 "No, I mean where are you FROM from?" Considering all that this country has been through in the last couple years, all the the right-wing hatred against immigrants...At this point, you cannot BUT presume ill-intention behind that question. Not EVERY question deserves an answer and I certainly steer clear of this one.

It's too bad there is no part 2...showing how he adapts to Korean society, learning the language and the culture, which more likely would treat him as a foreigner. He was never exposed to other Asians until he met the Vietnamese woman.

As an adoptee I have two things to say about this movie. First, this movie is well done and the exposure is much needed. Second, unknown to most there is a dark cloud around the creation of this movie. Most of the adoptee community that I know as well as adoptee rights organizations are boycotting this movie because they claim that Justin stole the basics of this story from a specific adoptee named Adam Crapser who was deported similar to the main character. Justin consulted with Adam and then never gave him any credit or money for his story. The adoptee rights organizations charge that Justin didn’t use this opportunity as a call to action to help adoptees in crisis.

People are boycotting this film because it is making money from Adam Crasper’s struggle to stay in the United States as a Korean Born Adoptee. I am sure Justin will have Crasper have a share of Chon’s box office revenue. They will settle this.
