Stunt doubles are just a part of acting we’ve come to accept, as we know that it’s not really a 60-year-old Liam Neeson punching out all of those bad guys, no matter how many tricks the filmmakers use to hide it. However, there have been some occasions where actors have been out of commission and were replaced by doubles -- or different actors -- for a considerable amount of time, and we were all fooled by it.
From the Friends stand-in who made it onto an episode to Harrison Ford’s injury that gave his stunt double extra screen time, let’s take a look at some actor replacements that fooled us all.
#Actors #TV #Movies
Natalie Portman | 0:00
Bruce Lee | 1:26
Michael Pitt | 2:22
Nicholas Brendon | 3:10
Gene Hackman | 3:54
Josh Pence | 5:00
Josh Dallas | 5:39
Penelope Cruz | 6:39
Lena Headey | 7:39
Brandon Lee | 8:17
Jennifer Aniston | 8:51
Shemp Howard | 9:35
The Cast of Evil Dead | 10:20
Harrison Ford | 11:05

@Looper, the Aniston one wasn't a 'replacement' but a stand-in, and when originally aired, you couldn't see the stand-in enough to notice it was someone else. It only became known/seen when the episodes became available/shown in widescreen format. So it's not that it was a replacement that 'fooled us' but just someone dropping the ball on editing when they released the episodes in widescreen format.

Nope, she played Padme the Queen but because she needed to be in disguise too, Kiera was chosen to play the Queen as a double when Padme was hiding in plain sight as herself in scenes as a diversion due to threats against the Queen...Kiera & Natalie looked so much alike that their own mothers couldn’t tell who was who when both were in makeup so of course Kiera was the perfect double as Queen when Queen Padme was hiding in plain sight.

I was just going to say this. Friends was actually shot with a 16:9 aspect ratio and since the "original" tv release was cropped to be 4:3, the editing process ignored the characters and items left in the sides of the frame. When friends was remastered for HD they used the original 16:9 footage, without re-editing the footages, that's why you can sometimes see awkward set props on the sides or stand-in actors.
@PikkaBird

Also, the episode they mentioned isn't at all the only one where it happens. All the girls have stand-ins that are now visible in the uncropped footage. I didn't notice it for any of the guys though.

So true. TBH I hated Rachael Dawes and wanted to mostly ignore her, but I noticed instantly she'd been changed. How anyone was fooled by them is beyond me. Dumbledoore might've possibly been less notice IF he hadn't suddenly seemed angry. I mean for the extra time they took to do 3-oddly one of the better films and one of the more unique looking ones (before they kept using the same director where everyone just kept looking too blue in my opinion) despite it being a big deviation from the source, you'd think they'd have had "new dumbledoore" do more research and whatnot instead of standing out like someone who wasn't even supposed to be in the movie.

Jennifer Aniston’s stand in only appeared in that episode after the aspect ratio of the episodes was expanded from 4:3 to 16:9 for their HD remasters. These episodes were filmed in 16:9 but framed for and cropped to 4:3 when they were shooting. It’s not that they “forgot to cut the scene out” it’s that... you were never supposed to see her standing there because she was outside the frame and the episodes were never intended to be viewed in that aspect...

1:09 Well, Elsa Pataky is 5'3" as well so... 9:00 Not unusual at all. The show was broadcast for the "square" 4:3 aspect ratio and has recently been widened up to the 16:9 aspect ratio that TVs use now, thus sometimes revealing stuff on the side that were never meant to be in the shot.

The Richard Donner cut of Superman II is much better than the Lester version. It's a little bit shorter and there are a couple of things that I have concerns with, but since Donner didn't get to complete the movie originally, he was limited on his options later on. First concern - Donner's method of Lois proving that Clark is Superman was to shoot him using a blank bullet. Ignoring the fact that the scene shown was using audition footage (since actual footage was never made), Clark/Superman can still feel things that come into contact with him. Thus, when he was shot with a blank, he should have realized that he didn't feel anything, meaning that he wasn't really shot, and then acting surprised that that he wasn't hurt. (With his super speed and such, he also should have noticed that there was no bullet coming at him.) POTENTIAL SPOILER (if you haven't seen the Richard Donner version of Superman II) Second concern - Superman reverses time again to fix everything. Sort of a cheap trick since that's how he handled things in the first movie. Not only that, but the results are inconsistent with the first movie as well. In the first, people remembered what had happened, and Superman simply undid the damage. In this one, it made people forget what had happened. My hope is that Donner would have done those two parts differently had he been allowed to finish the movie. However, we'll never know. I doubt Donner himself even knows if he would have changed anything, since any changes might have been based on feedback from others while making the movie (feedback that never happened since he wasn't able to continue making the movie).

Speaking of Natalie Portman, the character of V was played by James Purefoy for the first 3 months of shooting on V for Vendetta until he quit and got replaced with Weaving. Luckily because of the mask, there are many scenes in which Purefoys body is still on screen and Weaving is dubbed in with the voice. So with stunt actors included V just changes height and build slightly throughout the film. Even in costume, you can tell that some actors have bigger ears than others.

They were both crying in the green room while shooting that sequence and often we needed breaks for them to recover. I guess walking naked (or half naked in Lena's case) while being cursed by big mob, and hit by shit(although fake shit) and real rotten tomatoes and other shiet really gets to you. The description of Superman's shooting schedule wasn't quite accurate. They shot Superman and the sequel simultaneously from the beginning. Only when they got close to the set release date for the first film's preset release date, and were behind schedule, did they decide that they should put all their efforts to just finish the first one. The narration makes it sound like the director just decided to start shooting the second film randomly in the middle of doing the first.

This is true. While stuff was being shot and handled, that was when those salkind morons screwed over Donner. Granted, having seen the richard donner cut, I kinda prefer the "we filmed these scenes 2 years later practically" version that was in the theatres, because some of it is off due to it never truly being completed. It was still plain wrong. I get they thought superhereos couldn't be taken seriously but... Then they went and made III, and while it definitely is goofy, the junkyard fight scene, and superman being exposed to unpure cryponite and becoming "evil" was far darker than anything in the first two in my opinion. I'd say they are ridicoulous hyprocrites for that. Though, I do laugh that, instead of a real new villian, or just recasting, they felt the need to make a knock-off Lex Luthor to run the film.

"Let's see, a Marvel movie franchise with lasting longevity guarantee to my career or a TV show with a story so hackneyed it can get cancelled at any time. Hmm, decisions, decisions. I, I have to go with the hackneyed TV show!" Double-U. Tee. Eff.

The stand ins in Game of Death fooled us all?? Come on! It's hilariously apparent that it's not him 98% of the time. I gotta give it to the stand in though; he does the moves very well, so I can't complain about that. :D

Thanks a lot for ruining my childhood, I thought Ford was so unbelievably cool in that fight scene as a kid, he was like my idol, my father figure and now I'm finding out it wasn't even him?

Pretty surprised you didn't include Dick York to Dick Sargeant in "Bewitched." There are people who swear it was the same actor to this day. Even though they look and sound totally and completely different.

Harrison Ford was also replaced by Morgan Paull (the actor who plays the detective shot in the opening scene) in one scene in Blade Runner.

For one reason or another, I haven’t gotten around to watching season 3 of Hannibal yet. From the clip shown, the actor who played After Mason seems to have made a seamless combo of the actor who played Before Mason and Gary Oldman’s portrayal in the movie. The character had three physical forms in the whole world of Hannibal Lector. Sociopathic playboy with a penchant for cruelty and a fetish for tear martinis, the THING we were presented with in the Movie Hannibal that was both pitiful and completely hate worthy, and now we are seeing the true transition between the two forms. Face and voice. I know I’m an odd one out in the Hannibal fan group. I enjoy all the movies and books. I just choose to see inconsistencies (to what I have pictured in my mind as a long term fan? That sounds wrong, but fan to the series) as just theories, someone telling a different view of the story. I have my Hannibal, my Clarice, my Verger, etc, in my mind. The shows can’t take away from that, or suffer because of it. It just adds to the overall story I have in my mind. I will eventually watch season 3. I hope they did a good job with it, and I’m looking forward to seeing the new Verger. But to ppl who disagree with me, please know, I have my moments too. When the show premiered, I had a mild disagreement with my tv because they fucked to the stories. Until they got far enough along to show their own stories. I like my canon material, but am open to sprinkles on top.

1:08 "This switcharoo certainly saved a lot of trouble for the crew. While filming other kissing scenes in the Thor-series, Portman said that, since she's so short, "They usually had a ramp for me to walk up so I could land somewhere near his face."" According to both basic google search and IMDb, Elsa Pataky is full centimeter taller than Natalie Portman, Pataky standing 161cm tall, whereas Portman is 160cm*. A difference in height that apparently constitutes the need of ramp for one of them but not the other, when kissing a man next to whom both of them stand up to somewhere around his chest area. I guess Elsa is more accustomed to it, with her being married to said man, but still... *I don't bother adding comparable imperial sizes in this case, because anyone can tell based on numbers alone, that the difference is miniscule.

8:30 Brandon Lee wasn't killed by a dummy round, a squib (small explosive with a dye pack to simulate bullet hits) in the grocery bag he was carrying in the scene accidentally sent a projectile into his chest. (most likely a piece of the explosive, casing or other small item in the bag)

you forgot kiera knightly was sometimes called in to replace Natalie Portman in Star Wars Phantom Menace. Sometimes Natalie wasn't available for a shooting day, so Keira would step in, body double or far away shots. There is one scene also at the end of phantom when you clearly see handmaiden switch when palpatine goes to celebration. 4 tall caucasion girls as she walking , then suddenly and asian handmaiden pop ups as they are talking.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY's Star Wars Secrets as Natalie Portman's Double - The Graham Norton Show BBC AMERICA. Kiera says it right there, also natalie wanted to go home, so kiera would step in. I'd put the link but they then flag links as spam now. Also several interviews with Natalie, she mentions it. Google is your friend. If you watch the Phantom menace 2.00.54 you'll see the difference in the handmaidens. The easiest to figure out was queen close up, when it first came out, the face was easy to point out who was who. Natalie has a mole that even make up can't cover up. Far away shots was a little tricker, but, you would know it's not natalie because natalie was shorter then all the handmaidens. Kiera was 2nd tallest or tallest can't remember what interview sofia coppola said.
