We’ve covered this topic more than once over the years, so here’s all our coverage combined into one extended video!
Choosing someone to take over a role from another actor is never easy, especially when the original actor drew praise for their take on a character. In the case of these casting switcheroos, the change was just too drastic for audiences to endure.

The New Darrin (which is what I've always called him, since I keep forgetting who is York and who is Sergent) seemed to have a real grudge against witches, all of them. You didn't mention the Partridge Family where Chris went from being a tall brunette to a short blonde. Looked younger too. One case where they did find a good replacement (in my opinion) was with Spartacus. When Andy Whitfield died after the first season they cast Liam McIntyre in the lead role. Replacing Whitfield wasn't easy to do because they not only needed someone who looked like him, but also someone who could convincingly portray a gladiator, with all the fighting skills necessary. In my opinion, the transition was pretty much seamless. I'm guessing casual viewers wouldn't have noticed the change.

The reason why so many fans turned away from the film was that it was totally rewritten for PC purposes. They made the bad guys 'neo nazis white guys' when in the book the attack was by Islamic Extremists. This was the beginning of MANY changes to stories to make ALL the villains 'white guys' rather than be faithful to the original material. Heck if this movie was made a few decades later, the politically correct lead would have been a FEMALE jack ryan.

Tom Clancy's stories were ruined by turning them from books into movies without Clancy's creative control. 7:52 Hey, when an actor has DIED, fans can choose between a replacement or no more films in the franchise. My personal, humble, opinion: The new actor not having read the books should not be an issue b/c the *director* should be communicating their vision of character. I say the fault then lay there, not with the actor - I mean, you're running a sorcery college where evil forces are regularly trying to murder students...y'all *should* be serious, right?
@dfuher968
@dfuher968 9 ай бұрын
Indeed. Richard Harris is by far my favorite in the role, but Michael Gambon is also an excellent actor. The fault is clearly with the director. Its never easy replacing a character, tho it was sadly needed in this case, but its up to the director to make sure, it happens smoothly.
@mythra7174
@mythra7174 9 ай бұрын
The fault could be with J.K. Rowling, also. I thought I read somewhere where she had some control over the directions of the characters (I could be wrong, though). So she could have mentioned to any of the actors what she thought if she believed they were going in the wrong direction. One example: In the books, she wrote a lot of Snape's dialogue in all caps, followed by exclamation points, even describing him as spitting when he talked because he was so incensed about something. Then she straight up told Alan Rickman (who also didn't read the books I believe), "Snape doesn't yell." 🤨 Edit: I actually thought Gambon fit the kind of quirky side of Dumbledore better than Harris. And I never got the uproar about his shouting about Harry putting his name in the Goblet of Fire with people making fun of it with the whole "calmly" bit. I always interpreted it as Dumbledore just being worried about Harry because he knew that some foul play was at hand (and that someone had penetrated the defenses of Hogwarts) and he just feared for Harry's safety, not that he was overly excitable or anything.

Does anyone sane actually think Harry Potter was “ruined” by recasting Dumbledore? This premise here seems loony, but then most of the examples are pretty suspect. For a lot of those movies, it seems way easier for Hollywood PR to blame an actor for a movie’s failure rather than a whole team of producers, the director, and the script. Not to mention some tired sequel no one wanted. But in the case of Harry Potter, I think virtually everyone was sad when the old actor died and had to be replaced, then they went in watching the movies. There’s some major revisionist history in this video.
@jovetj
@jovetj 8 ай бұрын
@@grannyweatherwax8005 The third film was genuinely awful, and it was entirely on the director. Cuarón came in and re-envisioned the whole Potter universe, and it was terrible. And made little sense. He must have had no idea what he was doing. The films that followed were not as bad, but they were not great, either. The only great HP film was the second one. And, other than Gambon, the casting was excellently done.

It seems to me, as an actress, that it's virtually impossible to replicate one actor's quirks and nuances in a role with any other actor, no matter how talented. To do so would require an observation so minute as to be a study of several generations - especially irksome when the need for the replacement is urgent. The best you could hope for is an evocation, which is why most experienced actors know that a complete contrast is better. The ultimate best is when you can incorporate exaggerations of your own character into a role x

Sleepy Hollow - I was part of an entire fandom for that show, and the racism and toxic attitude of the showrunners was horrendous. I'll only pick on one example (but there are plenty more) as it was raised in the vid: Nicole Beharie was constantly belittled and had her part reduced until she was killed off episodes before the finale of season 3. I have seen "Catwoman" many times, and I always have the thought that viewers needed a fresh perspective on the whole idea of the character, and I never believed that Salena Kyle was supposed to be the only known Catwoman in the Bat-verse, Look at the Campy Catwomen from the '62-64 Batman show and Movie, none of them had any notable secret names behind the Cat; Yes the Lee Anne Merriweather's Catwoman said her name was K.I.T.K.A. but that does not really count as the character's real name since it was just part of her cover to get close to Bruce Wayne so that she could get ever closer to the Batman. Powers of the cat is always going to be more of a curse than a blessing; It looks like a blessing from our perspective, but it will always seem like a curse to the one with the power.

The Tom Clancy film "The Sum of All Fears" is one of my favorite movies of all time. It was thrilling. It held my attention the whole time and seemed much shorter than it was when it was over. I love that movie, and I am not at all a Ben Affleck fan.

Worst replacement for me was Robert Wightman as John Boy in 'The Waltons.' He had none of Richard Thomas's charm and was really underwhelming. Was also a shame to lose Will Geer, but at least the writers handled it well.

The Mummy 3, I hate this movie. I'm a big fan of this saga and I hated 3. It's shameful, disrespectful to change actors and tell us "it's the same".... NO. It's better to change the scenario a little to explain why she's not in the adventure. Everything would have been fine "she's traveling around the world son", "she's in seminar with the university" anything but *not taking us for idiots*. There are movies where it's not really visible thanks to the makeup and great performances (like Dombeldor or Gandalf) but this was really rubbish for the Mummy 3!!!! The only one in the saga that I haven't bought and haven't seen since its release, while the Mummy 1 and 2 I watched them again barely two weeks ago haha

I think for the most part people need to take off their nostalgia glasses. Actors logistically can't always play their role for 10 years. And ironically the people who give a production negative backlash for replacing an actor are the same people who ALSO criticize a show that stays the same for "going on too long/beating a dead horse/out of material/show is dead". A perfect example of this is The Office. Everyone loved Michael Scott and people were up in arms when he left. But I was watching it as it came out. I can't tell you how many times during season 6/7 when people were like "man that show needs to end already" ...So now yall are mad that the show you think already died is different now? But personally I LOVE season 9. I think Pete and Clark and Erin and Ellie are hilarious and I would have loved more seasons of the office centered on them. I will admit, I think James Spader was not the right option for the show. He's good at acting pompous and all-knowing, which is why he's great in The Blacklist, but within a cast of 15-20 other people like the Office that doesn't work. So season 8 wasn't their best work. But they really stepped in up in Season 9, I wish they could have continued, or maybe, made a new spinoff show.

They should've had Jude Law as Dumbledore and make him up as the old man for the remaining 5 Harry Potter films. I had to count the 2 parter year seven film as one whole film for less confusion. I like Michael Gambon as much as I like Jude Law, but we can all agree that Jude Law APWB Dumbledore was a lot closer to the Richard Harris APWB Dumbledore both of whom was very close to the character we knew from the books, even I have to admit that Michael Gambon's Dumbledore had a little too much of the "Baltus Van Tassel" type of energy and attitude.😅

The first Dumbledore was great for the first two movies, and would have worked for the third, wouldn’t have been good in the fourth movie, and there’s no way in hell that I believe he could have done the last four movies justice. Guy was Santa Clause. He was absolutely not believable as a mega powered wizard that could fight Voldemort. He’s too slow and fragile. I liked the second Dumbledore so much more.

BBC sitcom My Hero. The actor playing George Sunday left, and the last season is a hot mess as a result. Instead of winking at the fourth wall, saying maybe the Irish guy got a makeover and some elocution lessons to sound more English, they changed his name to George MONDAY, said he lost his original human body in a game of poker on his home planet and leaned too far into the crazy by having his wife teling everyone the first George just up and left her and their and children. Meanwhile, second George is trying to manipulate his way back into bed with his (understandably) angry wife and she's trying to make everyone believe this guy is her lodger: a doctor who is paying to sleep on the couch of a two bedroom flat shared by a "recently divorced" woman and her two infant chlidren.

Yes, he was an excellent actor. And imo, the problems in his first Potter movie was the directors fault. Since it was sadly necessary to replace the late Richard Harris, its the directors job to, well, direct, to give the actor something to work within. Otherwise the actor will, ofc, read the script and give his interpretation of the character. The director apparently didnt think, fans would notice the different styles of Gambon and Harris, but that is certainly no fault of Gambon.
