Looking back on his prolific life in the spotlight, the fact that his career basically ran out of steams in the 90s might be a bit surprising, at least on the surface. But the stories from the TV and films sets on which he worked make a pretty case for why Hollywood eventually grew tired of his antics.
In this video, we will dissect the many reasons why Chevy Chase has developed such a bad reputation in show business and who some of his biggest enemies are, and why. We'll also discuss Chase's notorious feud with fellow comic Bill Murray and how it eventually came to a head and resulted in a fistfight while on the set of Saturday Night Live back in the late 70s.

@@jennas6846 Dan also said that he would have meetings in Chevys trailer about the script and Chevy had to OK all of his dialogue. So clearly Chevy was OK with the writing for some time. I can see why Chevy and his ego couldn’t handle it for too long.

My friend, that dry persona is part of his humor. All comedians have a dry nature for a set up for a joke. Be dry, then drop the joke. I've been writing comedy for seven years. Whether I'm good or suck. The set up in my experience is equal or more important than the punchline. Imagine acting crazy then delivering a joke, not so funny. But if you show no expression-then hit it. Not everybody acts jolly, because they're funny. Only comedian I met that was smiley was Ralphie May. Everybody is reserved unless they're trying to entertain you.

The question is whether anyone will remember Chase in, say, fifty years. He was basically a B actor/comedian. His film comedies had broad appeal in their given moment, but again, I have to wonder whether anyone will be watching them by mid century.

He apparently came from a wealthy, blue blood family that was also full of abuse and dysfunction (incidentally, save the abuse part, one could say the same about his fellow SNL alumnus Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). I think that what sounds like a horrible upbringing probably drove him to enter show business to begin with, and created the broken person he seems to be.

Flashback to the early nineties... my friends and I had been partying in Vancouver all night and we decided that we wanted to see the sunrise from Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver. There was a filming crew setting up across the Dam but unabated we went ahead and had our sunrise session on the Dam as crew members passed by us. From one of the trailers a tall man wearing a leather jacket, hat and aviators came out and asked the crew member who passed about us... after which he walked right at us. I thought at first he was coming to kick us out of the area but instead he took off his sunglasses and introduced himself. We offered him to join us but he politely refused and asked us about our night. As we were telling him, he remarked that we must be hungry and promptly took us to the food trucks and got us breakfast before saying it was good to see kids still partying like that. Then he left to get ready for filming.... all around classy guy.

I was in rehab in MN with Cornelius, aka, Chevy, in 2016. He was nice enough but oh so full of himself. I can easily see how he’d rub people the wrong way. I had to remind him of where we both were. 😂😂 I have to admit, he was incredibly charming and funny but I think that was just an act to keep anyone from really getting to know him. We spoke a few times over the couple of months Awe we’re there. I’m from NYC and he thought it was funny how I was stuck there with him in Midwest. I honestly liked him but I didn’t have to work with him. lol

None of the cast of community HATED Chevy or had it in for him. They just defended themselves and eventually didn’t allow his behaviour and actions to go without consequences, including having to shoot scenes separately due to the right of a safe non toxic workplace environment. I don’t think any of them actually think about him enough to hate him. If anything they pity him.

I'm old enough to have watched the original start of the 1975 SNL. I honestly never liked Chase or he never made me laugh or did not find him funny at all. I never saw any of his movies because of this. And it all boils down to exactly your description of his antics & "better than thou attitude" which is very much apparent. Your question which movie about him did I like? The only one I went to see was "Foul Play" only because it had Goldie Hawn & especially because of the "Soundtrack done by my favorite Artist of all time" "The Showman Of (they say our!) But now it's("MY")Generation" That had an "Oscar Nomination" for "Best Song from a Movie" in this film, the only reason I went to see this movie! And I did enjoy the movie.
