I will say, Ceratosaurus hasn't been givin it's proper respect to Dino media, and even movies. It's also one of the most underrated Dinosaurs. Eventhough this creature is pretty common and known, it's one of those dinosaurs just like what we saw with the Dino Poop in JP3 and even in Theodore Rex, Ceratosaurus is always seem to be treated as a background animal, or an afterthought. It's one of my favorite Dinosaurs, it's a really cool animal if giving the proper treatment.

There's several notable things about this film that explains why it's such a change, not just the fact that Spielberg didn't direct. The first JP novel was written by Chrichton in 1990, then after the success of the film the studio asked him to write a sequel which was used as the basis for the script for the second film. JP3 and following films are original scripts based on the prior films. Additionally, David Koepp, who wrote the screenplays for JP 1 & 2, was a seasoned veteran who had written and directed several genres, including action, comedy, and suspense. There were two writers for JP3; this was Peter Buchman's first script, while Alexander Payne only had experience with drama. None of this is necessarily bad, but it helps to explain the change in tone and quality from the first films.

The original script was immediately rejected by Director Joe Johnston, calling it "A bad episode of Friends." It had involved teenagers getting stranded on the island, Isla Sorna, where they meet a strange hermit living in a treehouse. The hermit is actually Alan Grant, having snuck onto the island to study the dinosaurs in their natural habitat.

18:05-18:21: This isn't the Worker Village from the previous film, it's an Embryonic Lab. "The Lost World" took place in the southern half of Isla Sorna while "Jurassic Park III" takes place in the northern half, hence why the ecology is more tropical than what we saw last time, and why the Raptors and Pteranodons here are different from their cousins from the first two movies.

It's kinda funny, Eric was 8 weeks alone and properly had a survival rate of 90%+ the moment he met the adults his survival went down a lot XD. I liked all 3 of the movies. The first one was the best from the Jurassic Park trilogies. I hope you try watching the Jurassic World Movies, too, they have their, own charm and I quickly realized that I shouldn't compare them to the OG. I stopped having high hopes or expectations. I go to nearly every movie with a neutral opinion, and it helped me a lot. Especially with the remakes like Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan. I liked your reaction to this movie like to the other 2. Thx for a fun ride seeing all your emotions and I think the second half after the boy joined was a lot more enjoyable than the few mins. For me, I personally love all the movies even if there’s some things I don’t like. If it gives me an excuse to see dinosaurs, I’ll watch it lol I really like they explored the concept of what makes pack animals, or animals in general, intelligent. Just like any animal that work within a group, it’s not a crazy concept that they would have their own language and calls for each other. They’re just like wolves, but smarter. Love your input in each film you watch! ☺️ Also when you were confused about that one carnivore (it’s name is Ceratosaurus btw), the reason why it walked away was bc it could smell the droppings was from a large predator. It knew it was best to stir clear bc it wouldn’t be able take on a dinosaur that size and would probably become it’s next meal. So it left.

26:03 One reassuring fact about pterosaurs; they would be physically incapable of picking you up like a bird as their feet weren't adapted for grasping. In fact, their feet were eerily similar to human feet. However, species like Pteranodon(the ones in the film) could impale you with their beak if they pecked you really hard

Archeologists and paleontologists suggest that the Trex should have easily won that fight with spino due to Rexy's massive jaws and jaw strength and due to it's thick neck to support it's head the neck snap shouldn't have been so easy.

Archeologists don't study dinosaurs. I think it's mainly Jack horner the paleontologist who work on those movies that told that after all the critisism this scene got. I mean it's still true that the neck snap couldn't have killed the T-rex, but then again the spinosaurus wasn't as well known as today and we're still discovering new things about him, but yeah there aren't many animals that could take down a t-rex outside of his natural rivals.

@@Megaspinosaurusrex i wouldn't say many. 3 individuals have now been found at 10 tonnes, considerably larger than another other land preditor. And theres the insane bite force and evidence it hunted triceratops. The only land animals that could beat it consistantly would be large sauropods (is my guess).
@gothicbutterfly013

Fun fact: the spino vs t rex scene was *supposed* to be longer, but they underestimated how much stronger the new animatronic was compared to the older one, and so on an early attempt at it the spino animatronic accidentally decapitated the rex animatronic so they *had* to go with the much shorter fight.
@erika_itsumi5141
@erika_itsumi5141 Жыл бұрын
A Dinosaur expert has actually said the Spino literally couldn't do that because of how much of a bull neck the T-Rex has, so the T-Rex literally would have won that fight in real life. Also the fact that T-Rex has the strongest bite of any animal ever, and the first bite would have severed the Spinos spine behind the neck and the trakia and esophagus and the wind pipe was crushed by the lower jaw, and from what he said, injures like that are fatal
@Enthymene
@Enthymene 6 ай бұрын
I think the fan reaction to that moment led directly to how they treat the T. Rex in the later films, what I've started calling the "Godzilla-fication" of Rexy. But that discussion can wait until Jurassic World.

The dinosaur they first meet is called a "Spinosaurus" and is said to be among the largest ever Theropods ..... Even larger than the Tyrannosaurus, Giganotosaurus and the Carcharodontosaurus. The Spinosaurus had a large sail-like fin on it's back, which may have aided in swimming, making it (possibly) semi-aquatic.

It's a little over-technical, perhaps, but Pterosaurs the flying creatures are not, strictly speaking, dinosaurs. They are prehistoric reptiles of the same era, certainly, but not technically dinosaurs. Between the original Jurassic Park and this one, they realised that many dinosaurs actually had primitive feathers. That is reflected a little bit in this, but the most recent representations, particularly of smaller carnivores (like raptors and their kin), have feathers.

Steven directed the two movies that came from author Michael Crichton's books. Once the franchise moved beyond the original source material, he pulled back to a producer role. I give him props, however, for retaining the producer position after what happened to the Jaws franchise, to ensure some semblance of quality filmmaking and not allowing things to get too ridiculous and watered down in cheap cash grabs by the studio. It's amazing. Take a good movie, and hand it off to John Williams to score the soundtrack, and it becomes an epic movie. This was the first movie of the franchise that Williams didn't do, and it really shows just what impact he really has in his ability to manipulate our emotions in such a subtle way that we become fully vested in the characters and the plotline. The effects weren't any less, and in all honesty the plot was no more or less ridiculous than either of the first two..... yet we come away from this one feeling let down. You can go down the list of every movie he's ever worked on, and if you try to picture that film without his score, it simply doesn't seem to be as epic or as memorable as it is with his soundtrack. That's no offense to the composers who end up having to follow in his footsteps, but he's a master composer. It would be like asking someone to follow up on one of Mozart or Beethoven's symphonies. It's simply not going to happen, no matter how talented and creative the individual is, because every composer has their own unique style and sound. They each touch us in different ways. Look at the Star Wars movies. John Williams did the score for Rogue One, but none of the other standalone films of the franchise ~ and Rogue One is the one everyone actually loves, while the others fall flat. It's simply a testament to John Williams' mastery. In my personal opinion. And I do agree that once Eric enters the main storyline the movie improves. Up until that point, everyone seems more like caricatures than characters. He brings depth and purpose to all of the interactions between the characters from midway through until the end of the film. Again, just my personal opinion. He seems to bring out the likeability of all of the other characters. He finally gives us someone we can actually care about ~ especially since we're all still in shock that Grant and Sattler are no longer together. I think the mistake of this movie was starting it off on a disappointing tone with that revelation, and it takes us halfway through the film to move past it.

I think the reason why Alan and Ellie didn't end up together here was because they disliked the big age difference between the actors. I don't know why this should matter in this case though, because in their roles they could've easily passed as having an age difference of 5-8 years. At least I always thought they weren't that far apart age-wise.

Their romantic tension in the first film was also just added by Spielberg, it wasn't there in the original Jurassic Park book where they have strictly non-sexual mentor/mentee relationship and Ellie is just a college girl working with him. She was aged up into a paleontologist with a doctorate for the film probably exactly to give them romantic tension without making it look creepy.

When you say the raptor smarts is unfair, well technically most animals have strengths/skills/abilities over us. We can barely lift a adult pig without tools/assistance. The only reason we're able to compete with animals is our tools and brain ability, and yet humans still lose to animals frequently. With the end scene with the raptors, I like to imagine my own dialog between the raptors. In the final boat fight, the gasoline from the boat is why the flare started the fire. Ik people don't care for this film, but I enjoy it. It does get small references in the jw movies. I like how the raptors get more character development in each film after the first one.

Minor spoilers for the sequel trilogy. Somewhat recently the writers went back and established that the Spinosaurus seen in this movie was an early hybrid test (which you’ll see later on in the sequel trilogy if you keep going). Giving it a reason why it’s so aggressive and beefy compared to the actual Spinosaurus. Doesn’t magically make this movie better but it’s nice that they tried to go back and add a couple extra layers.

Since you've expressed curiosity about Spinosaurus, and the whole bigger/not bigger than T.rex thingy, I will do my best to answer. I'm no palaeontologist, but I have enough interest in the field that I might as well give this a shot. I will begin with Spinosaurus. This is a very enigmatic animal, and the remains available when this movie was shot were very fragmentary. The production took advantage of this and essentially "built up" Spinosaurus by attaching to it pieces from other giant theropods, particularly its legs, creating a gigantic terrestrial animal that is more or less made up. Thanks to more recent discoveries, we know Spinosaurus was a marvelous animal, something like a gigantic version of a heron: a huge animal that mostly fed on fish, turtles, and crocodiles in the rivers of Cretaceous North Africa. While Spinosaurus was indeed one of the longest theropods in existence in linear terms, it definitely wasn't in terms of mass - this was a relatively skinny, elongated animal with a low center of gravity. You can see a good, up to date reconstruction here: markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2020/05/spinosaurus-2020-thoughts-for-artists.html Now, broadly on the question of size, and the whole "bigger than T.rex" thing which these movies love to do... The first thing to remember is that size is a property of individuals, not species. Just think about how much height variation you see in humans, to make the most relatable example. Now, we are able to make somewhat firm generalisations about modern animals because we can use statistics to draw conclusions from populations that include thousands, millions, or sometimes (like humans) billions of individuals. We absolutely cannot do this with extinct species. We have maybe - IIRC - 27 Tyrannosaur skeletons, all of them partial (although some are very complete) and at different stages of their lifetime, spread over a time period of about two million years (68-66MYA). For other giant theropods, we have even less. For instance, Giganotosaurus, another giant theropod frequently mentioned in these discussions, we only have two specimens, one of which is extremely fragmentary. For a while in the early 2000s there was a bit of a meme in paleoculture about Giganotosaurus (or Spinosaurus) being "the largest terrestrial carnivore ever" and JPIII embraced this idea wholeheartedly. Thankfully the modern field is a lot warier of these grand sweeping statements. We simply cannot determine average population sizes from such small samples of partial skeletons. All we can say is that T.rex and Giganotosaurus, and a bunch of other predatory dinosaurs across the Mesozoic, grew to gigantic sizes that are about the same order of magnitude. Actually establishing which one is longer by one metre or whatever is frankly both impossible and pointless. Another thing that people frequently get wrong is that they obsess over linear measures to a degree that I find extremely bizarre. E.G. how long or how tall is X giant carnivore. But length and height can be misleading, especially in theropod dinosaurs, where the neck and tail combined represent a good chunk of overall body length. When we look at size in modern animals we tend to focus on mass, because that is the only measure that actually tells you "how much of the animal" is there. To make a very obvious example, a giraffe is taller than an elephant, but is it bigger? Not in terms of mass. The problem is that estimating the mass of an extinct animal is very difficult. Different models, built on different assumptions, will yield different results. Again it is safest to say that there are a few species of giant theropods, including T.rex and Giganotosaurus, that were broadly in the same order of magnitude when it comes to body mass. Having said that, of the fossils we do have, the one that shows the most extreme skeletal adaptations and signs of a very large body mass is Sue, a very old (28yo) Tyrannosaurus. Purely based on this, as well as the fact that Tyrannosaurus had specific adaptations to a lifestyle that selected for bulkiness (having to feed on armoured herbivores) might well have been the biggest in terms of body mass. But note that this is a MASSIVE "might" and moreover it is only limited to the fossils we've already found, which are certain to be a very incomplete record. To close on a note more related to the franchise, I personally blame this movie for popularising the idea of the big showdown between two giant carnivores. The Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus in this movie see one another and immediately becoming murderous/omnicidal, as if lions and crocodiles (to name one modern-day example) didn't coexist in Africa today without engaging in fights to the death the literal moment they come into contact.This fixation with the biggest, baddest predator is imho very juvenile and makes the dinosaurs in the movie look even more like monsters rather than animals. This by the way is the part where I once again ask if you'd be interested in reacting to Prehistoric Planet! Not only is it *the* standard when it comes to dinosaurs and special effects today, both in scientific terms and SFX quality, but the cinematography is gorgeous imho, and David Attenborough is his usual amazing self. I would subscribe to your Patreon just to see that! :P Cheers

Admire your passion for sure, but it’s a movie reaction, stop trying to gaslight and suck the fun from everything just to pander to your expectations. You are literally lurking on KZfaq just to force your ideologies onto others. Just stop and let people enjoy things without ruining the experience. These dinosaurs do not exist and will not exist in our lifetimes so just let it be. Go watch Prehistoric Planet if that’s your thing.

@@reginarichards6261 I'm talking about a topic I really like. One that is clearly connected to the reaction I might add. If you think that's gaslighting or ideology (lol) or it sucks the fun out for you, then I'm sorry but it sounds like a you problem. If you believe my comment expressing my personal opinion breaks any rules, report it. Else, learn to skip past comments you don't enjoy. I have as much right to express my opinion as you do, without resorting to ad hominem attacks. Nor can you speak for others claiming I'm "ruining their experience". I'm just a guy writing a KZfaq comment. If that's all it takes to ruin a movie, then maybe that movie has deeper issues than my opinions... I wonder if you would accuse people debating alien physiology or space physics under a Star Trek reaction video to be engaging in ideological pandering and gaslighting as well. After all, we'll never visit outer space ourselves. 🙄 And it's up to Clariss as the creator to decide if recommendations of other movies and shows are welcome or not, certainly not you. Cheers, and have a happy weekend!

For me, Jurassic Park 3 is the best of the series. It delivered exactly what I wanted- a genuine chase through the remains of the fallen Park while examining the hubris of those who built it. None of the other films were able to do that

The fight between the Rex and the Spinosaurus is why a lot of people don’t like this film. If that fight had paleontologically accurate, that Rex would have absolutely annihilated the Spinosaurus.

I just don't understand how some people say that. This film lacked suspense because they kill off all the obvious characters that would die pretty much at the beginning of the movie. You know they won't kill the family, but they could have at least killed Billy - an incredibly dull, lifeless character. However, they couldn't even do that. The Spinosaurus looks robotic and has dead eyes and the special effects in general in this movie look shoddy in many parts. Also, the tension building is lacking. It's just action scene after action scene pretty much. The Lost World at least had tension and epic-adventure feel to it. This film feels like a straight-to-dvd movie to me but to each his own.

She wanted children, he didn't. Accept the difference is irreconcilable and move on. You will learn in time you will always have might-have-beens and glad-dodged-that-disaster. Always root for the dinosaurs, they're always the smart ones. It was the humans that donated the easy open can of fresh meat. On the other hand birds are dinosaurs and we say bird brained not dino brained.

Everyone thought that this was going to be the last film in the series, but it wouldn't be until 2015 where we could return to the franchise with JURASSIC WORLD, as it was the highest grossing film in the Jurassic Park films, $1.6 billion dollars against a $150 million dollar budget. Anyway, thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊

They shot this movie without a script. They had scenes and choreography prepped for the dino scenes, because logistically they're complicated... but the rest of the movie they kinda winged it on set as they went along. Basically padding out the movie to tie the dino scenes together. If you notice between the practical effects and the CGI, none of it matches. In the Rex vs Spino scene, the two dinosaurs keep changing colour in that one scene depending on the cut. Rex goes from a bright green animatronic... to a CGI version that was yellow with black stripes, then turns a kind of grey for some reason. Spino goes from red and white... to brown and green... and at one point looked purple. Yet the practical Spino just looked grey all over. And that cartoon Brachiosaur on the river raft scene. Ugh. Even the actors didn't know what they were doing from day to day. Tea Leoni in interviews consistently refers to "animal tronics" when talking about the animatronics :D But, as bad as this movie is, the newest trilogy (JW 1-3) make JP3 look like Citizen Kane.
