In Greece, no one is ever expected to make it as big as Yiorgos has in the film industry. It’s very much looked down upon, to be an actor, a director, a filmmaker, so much so that they took away performing arts’ diplomas from students and it was barely covered, because a lot of Greeks see Performing Arts as “Not A Real Job”. It’s incredibly inspiring to have a Greek filmmaker actually succeed in the space and bring fourth such interesting topics.

That’s true, in 2011 I was living in Athens and I had a job interview for the director position in a small tv network. When they asked me about the filmmakers I like, I answered them that I like Lanthimos and they didn’t like it, they started telling me that he has done only one movie (dogtooth) and they really tried to degrade him to me. I am pretty sure these people they are still nobodies and Yorgos is one of the most popular directors now. And with every success he has that makes me happy because it shows me how wrong and shortsighted they were.

I adore Willem Dafoe’s performance. He embodies an archetype of scientist that once existed, that felt the ends justified the means. I also love that they made him Scottish. In the 1830s, Edinburgh was a major centre of medical training. Godwin Baxter feels like a character ripped from history. I love it.

While your observation about old film and newer digital capture is well-taken, you may be interested to know that POOR THINGS was *not* shot with digital cameras. POOR THINGS was photographed on good old celluloid film, just like ALL ABOUT EVE. The perceived difference in resolution, etc. is due to the use of different, better made lenses and improvements in film stocks. But POOR THINGS ain't digital. It's film.

Not really correct. While lenses have changed, a lot of the lenses used in Poor Things are vintage. Also 35mm film is still that, 35mm film, with no change in resolution. What HAS changed over the years is the SCANNING technology. Back in the day they simply didn't have scanners to digitise the rolls at the appropriate resolution. DVDs and VHS had lower resolutions because of this, but if you went to a cinema, where films were projected directly from a 35mm positive film roll, they were much sharper, comparative to 4k.

The scene with the General and the doctor showing off the surgical tool made me so sick to my stomach when I saw this film in a packed theater. And when the General explained the "surgery" to Bella and planned to forcefully impregnate her afterwards, I thought: "Okay, this asshole better die, I swear to God." Only for him to receive a fate worse than death by being non-consentually experimented on and losing all bodily autonomy after his brain is replaced by a goat. Potetic cinema, indeed.

Loved your reaction ! This movie's an instant favourite for me ! I saw it twice in theaters, and each time I was impressed by every aspect of it, especially Emma Stone's performance ! It's one of the best I've ever seen !

I wanted Lily Gladstone to win Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon because she was really great and also for the history of being the first native woman to win. But Emma Stone was incredible. Physically to go from acting like a toddler to child to teenager to adult was amazing.

It was such a close race. In any other year, each of them would have been the clear winner by a mile. I myself was questioning which one of them would be my pick until hours before the show, because both women excelled at two different kinds of acting. Lily Gladstone was restrained and subtle, commanding the screen with a few chosen words and glances - a screen that also contained heavyweights like DiCaprio and DeNiro, no less! And Emma Stone went all out and gave a one of a kind performance that was, in spite of the overuse of that phrase, truly fearless. Both will be in the discussion for best performance of the decade in a few years, I'm sure of that. It turned out to be bad luck for Lily Gladstone that both movies came out in the same year. In the end, I think I preferred Emma Stones performance slightly more, but I do hope this wasn't Lily Gladstones only nomination. If there is any justice in the film world, she will have a great career in front of her.

Although he has gotten award recognition for The Favourite (2018) and Poor Things (2023), for me, The Lobster (2015) is still my favourite Yorgos film.

Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest are also worth watching. The Best Picture line-up was incredibly strong this year. Maestro was the only one I disliked.

I adore The Lobster. I think Killing Of The Sacred Deer is one worth reacting to since it's got a similar uneasiness about it but is really brilliant.

This movie reminded me a lot of the new "Interview With The Vampire" TV series, in its dark tone about trying to understand life. Bella is very similar to Claudia, in Anne Rice's book she is about 5 years old, in the movie she's aged to about 10, and the new series they aged her to about 16, with a 20+ actress mostly to avoid predatory type people that might watch the show. From love, and sex, to life, and death they both tackle some of these issues. I think Anne Rice would have liked this movie, after all she did write a series of erotic "Sleeping Beauty" novels.

People were more cruel in the past and this movie is set in a alternate victorian era. Its important to learn from the past so we don't repeat it so showing how alot of these people could have bad intentions especially towards the vulnerable is importany to learn.

Emma Stone took home her second Oscar for Best Actress. The film also won Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup. I'm getting a new phone tomorrow, as the audio on this one is busted.

the movie does make you uncomfy but I think part of the point of it is that. like we're put in a conundrum ( a baby brain in a woman's body -her own mom too) and we get uncomfortable.

The idea of the movie is that Bella doesn't know or understand the rules and conventions of society (which were created by. men) and also doesn't care about such rules/conventions (including sexual ones) the more she learns about them. Therefore she doesn't feel any need or urge to abide by them and is determined to figure it all out for herself. And so she turns into a truly independent and free-thinking woman in a man's world, who thinks for herself and doesn't care about what anybody thinks about how she should be or how she should act or how she should live. She refuses to be defined / controled or dictated to by men or society

@@wackyvorlon The 2 men in her life (Mark Ruffalo/ her husband) who really try to control her end up being her victim rather than the other way around. Williaem Dafoe and his assistant are out to protect and take care of her while she is still very much a child. When they deem she is ready they are ok letting her go her own way (particularly Dafoe)

@keng4847 Okay, fair enough. It's rudimentary because it's a surface level read of the film. The film is viewed as a very pro-Feminine fantasy with emphasis on power dynamics, purely because it was decidedly from Bella's perspective and journey...HOWEVER Yorgos Lathimos himself has pointed out the goals are more in line with the concept of discovery in and of itself. It's not about any isms or pushing those agendas. It's predicated on her interfacing with the world in a very short amount of time and cutting out the possibility of repetition that leads to conditioning. Bella isn't a role model, like people are turning her into, it's very much a shining light on the. Concept of independence and what that means. It's about how perseptive she becomes to all this stimuli and challenges these notions of religion and such that was engrained in her before she even knew what it was. I'd argue that's the true bedrock of the film.

The film acknowledges that the men are taking advantage of her. You are supposed to be disturbed by what Mark Ruffalo and her Husband are doing to her. She act like a child which draws them in but as soon as she gains independence and intelligence, they start to get annoyed and lose interest because they are losing control. It not meant to be something that the film is rewarding the men for.
