2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug In Hybrid review by The Straight Pipes. The Outlander PHEV is putting down a combined 248 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque from a 2.4L 4 cylinder plug in hybrid with 2 electric motors. At $57,948 CAD, would you take it over waiting 4 years for a Rav 4 Prime?

I bought a 2023 Outlander PHEV in SEL trim and have had the car for 8-months. Absolutely love it. I charge on only 120V in my garage and most of the time it charges overnight. In the summer I get an EV range of 75-80kms and in the winter 60-65kms. I use no gas at all if I am doing city driving. Usually put in half tank of gas every 2-3 months! Love the interior and overall comfort.

I bought one of these this May and have been surprisingly more pleased than I thought. At first we bought it because nobody else had any inventory and I was not going to wait 18 months or longer for a Toyota or a Kia/Hyundai. Took a road trip from Ontario to the US Midwest last month and I have yet to put any gasoline in it since returning 6 weeks ago! Currently have just shy of 5000 kms on it and I've filled the gas tank only 3 times, including our road trip, and still have a quarter tank! Been averaging 4.7 liters/100km, so far. With remote control from the iPhone App I can fully heat or cool this vehicle up on the house current so it's ready to go when I'm ready to do. Very pleased, especially with not having to buy much gas for it.

I am looking between the Outlander PHEV and the RAV4 Prime as well; how do you find the quality of the build? Are the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVs made in Japan? I've heard lots of mixed reviews on the long-term reliability on this car and Mitsubishi in general and this is what's currently preventing me from pulling the trigger. Any comments you can provide is greatly appreciated!

I own a 2023 model and yes it is built in Japan. This is my second Outlander PHEV after I traded my 2018 model for one that looks like the one in this review. 😍 It consistently gets more looks than the 2019 Cayenne e-hybrid that my wife drives, although the Porsche interiors are amazingly nice in comparison (albeit at twice the MSRP). I also like how Mitsubishi gives you all the Active Cruise Control suite as part of a tech bundle and don't make you pay for each of these as stand alone option( my biggest gripe with some of the German marques.) I have had no issues with reliability or build quality with either of my Mitsubishi PHEV and the new model has certainly stepped up it's game in terms of interiors.@@andrewng6059

I’ve now had my 2023 Outlander PHEV for a few months. I love it! So economical. I’ve done 2500 kms so far and have only used 13 litres of petrol! You can get the range up to 82 kms on EV only if you switch it into eco mode and use one pedal driving. I live in New Zealand and It costs me about $3 to fully charge it up… so I’m spending about $17-20 a week on electricity… and our petrol prices are $3.10 per litre! So I’m saving over $500 a month if I had the same vehicle in ICE mode. But when you want to drive to more remote areas, where charging stations are few and far between, there’s no range anxiety.

It will sync to grid frequency and can feed your house and grid (assuming your retailer allows it). If you plug the v2l 1500W inverters into your house, they will be at different frequency and you'll likely nuke them. You could put a dedicated circuit in your house for them, but that's very clumsy compared to true v2g.

Picked up a 2023 this year, it's a solid vehicle. I would like some more stiffness in the steering, but that's nitpicking. It's handsome and comes with a lot of perks for the money.

could you please add a little segment going to a dark place and checking how the lights (parking lights, low and hi beams; fogs etc) looks when turned on ? new cars with these crazy headlights are really appealing when the lights are on .

This car has been on my sight for ages and I really love it. Would have bought it if I wasn't moving back to Europe in 2 years. Mitsubishi is no longer present in many European countries unfortunately so for maintenance and support it would be complicated. Good job guys. Don't fire Yuri. 😅

They should have used the Tarmac mode when doing that winding road. It has the same as power mode but with heavier steering and giving you somehow feeling of a stiffer suspension.

I love my Rally Art Mitsubishi PHEV Outlander. It actually gives me 45 miles on EV only, and now I have to worry about using the gas so that I can change it out every 3 months. The mudflaps and artwork give it an 80s/early 90s kind of look with a modern build. I was originally looking for a Toyota Rav4 Prime, but for the price and features, I'm super happy with my Outlander purchase. I highly recommend that you consider a test drive if you're looking for a similar SUV. I couldn't be happier, and can't wait to take it out camping with my family.

If the PHEV third row is a dealbreaker consider the non-PHEV model. It has a lot more room, comfier headrests, and can recline further than the default (which adds headroom) by pulling the recline tab after you're seated. I'm 6'2" and can sit in mine slouching and without my head touching.

Waiting 8 years for a model that would be replaced within 5 years is ridiculous. Maybe if it were a Land Cruiser 70 (still being sold new where I live), maybe that would make a little more sense since after 8 years, it would still be the same model as before.

Due to the scarcity of the dealers in my area test driving and purchasing an Outlander phev was a challenge. Ended up in a Hyundai santa fe hybrid that I’m very satisfied with so far, but think I might have gone for one of these if a dealer had been more convenient to access. I do lots of short trips so could have feasibly filled up once every couple months. I do like taking long trips often through the year so that’s why I wanted a hybrid vs a full electric suv.

Wife and I own a 23 PHEV SEL Premium and it is SUPER nice. I have also had Rouge rental cars and they DO NOT compare to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. They really feel like 2 different vehicles. It even seems like Mitsubishi is using some type of acoustic windows??? Extremely quiet. My wife’s only complaint is the way the brakes feel. While we are very happy with the PHEV that being said we probably would not have bought a non PHEV Outlander. As for the GKN transmission and Mitsubishi 2.4 engine those components are bullet proof! My only fear is 5 year resale value. I know it won’t be Toyota like but I hope it maintains some value.

Interesting, my mom just bought a 2023 normal gas Outlander, switching from her 2021 Outlander Sport which also had the CVT transmission. Her old car had a similar CVT to this where it just screams at you till you get to the desired speed. But the Outlander she has now which is just the gas-only version of this, also has a CVT, but they make it mimic a traditional transmission giving you the experience of shifting gears as you speed up. I wonder what did they do different from the regular version to the PHEV.

I bought one at the start of the summer (2023). I got 9000 miles on the clock and love it. comfortable for road trips but the gas mileage kinda sucks when you are out of electricity. That third row is the idea of a third row, like they said not very practical. If it was removeable it would give you room and take weight out. I go a thousand miles on a quarter tank of gas in Pinellas county, mind blowing

I have the Venza Limited but saw the Outlander inside my Costco. Looked great. Question. I live in a condo. Rules prohibit plugging in to the condo electrical system in the garages. Close by are pay meters for 25 cents for KW hour. Our local electrical rate is 1/4 of that. Still seems a pretty good savings over gas. Does it make sense to buy one if I use the meters at 25 cents.

i had the rav4 on my watchlist but the outlander will be replacing it. the outlander seems like more of a better buy at the price point. i'd prefer to go for the model with the least amount of electronic driver aids. i cant stand lane keep assist, stop/start, collision warning etc. etc.

Not a CVT tho. It's one gear gearbox that works only at 70km/h, before that its just a gasoline engine at optimal revs powering the generator who then powers the electric engines.

Definitely take it over the Rav4 without waiting a year. Outlanders are awesome. Regular or Sport. Actually Outlander Sport is the true Outlander. They should let Outlander Sports have the Outlander name. And they should rename Outlanders to Overlanders and make them 6 inches longer, so that the third row is legit.
