The RLX has roots tied to the beginning of Acura with the Legend in 1986. What does this mean for Honda's Luxury arm, Acura, going forward?

I have a 2016 Acura RLX and I love it! I feel it’s very underrated. It has literally everything on it. This was the first car with the dual screens, jewel headlights, and now every car company is doing it. I get a lot of compliments and a lot people claim they never really seen it. This is a car you’re not gonna see at every red light or in general. I guess I have a rare diamond now 😎

... with a proper auto or manual transmission. To me, the CVT has never helped Honda North America. When I drove rentals in Japan, not really an issue. The much lower speed limits hid the "CVT drone". Engineers at Honda HQ (NOT NORTH AMERICA!!) Knows how to make great vehicles (nose to tail). Hopefully someone with lineage to Soichiro Honda takes control of the company from the bean counters. As a previous 20+yr consumer (until 15 yrs ago) of Honda, what Honda could/CAN be (again) is greatly missed.

@@aryapradhanad186 yes. Thanks. my fault for not being clear - proper auto only / no DCT or current auto transmission design being used (frag outs at 60K miles or less) Please don't use CVTs in any NA Models, especially if the Legend is brought back. Do use a manual. Especially if the 2 door platform is ever brought back. Man I loved that car. Still think the 2 door Legend looks great.

Kirk, you totally nailed it. Brand renaming was foolish and the lack of a V8 for the Legend/RL/RLX didn't allow much distinction from other 4 dour V6s. Acura bet that the SH-AWD would be that distinguishing factor and they failed. I owned a 2006 RL and I have to say, the SH-AWD was great. I really enjoyed it until I traded it for a 2013 Lexus AWD GS350 F-Sport. I never had any issue with the RL but it just wasn't as fun as the 2013 GS350. Where you can see Lexus is trying to breakout of that conservative, reliable image, Acura is even slower accepting this reality.

In 2004 I purchased the 1994 acura legend sedan champaigne ext/beige leather int. w/80k miles, premium gas only. Car drove so smooth, i fell in love with it. My next vehicle was a 1995 acura integra sedan bronze ext/beige cloth, base model w/132k miles. It was a gas saver, unleaded gas. I didnt know how to drive stick shift so i was taught to drive it in 3 days and there i go enjoying this gas saving light weight vehicle. Next car 1999 acura R.L. 3.5, pearl ext/beige leather int. w/201k miles at the time, now has 242k miles, yes i still have this 1, it drives just as smooth as the 1994 acura legend sedan i had but the 3.5 v6 in the R.L eats more gas than the 3.2 v6 engine in the Legend, the R.L still drives excellent, blows ice cold air and had alot of people asking me about it, not for sale. Now my daily vehicle 2003 acura MDX base model yeah bigger vehicle, eats gas but its an suv called the X. At 130k miles, engine and transmission still running strong, theres 2 more models above this 1 that do drive smoother "touring, touring with navi" but thats in 03, now theres sh-aw and more. The mdx requires premium...... Acura is loosing it, with these new exterior designs and dated interiors. If they bring back the LEGEND and INTEGRA, it will bring acura back on top of the list, keep the way the acura legend looked, give integra a new look, i dont mind that rear extended trunk on the legend, these new tlx rlx ilx and mdx arent really catching my attention.

It was a steal in the used market back then because of cheap gas, nobody knew what a RLX was, and everyone being SUV/truck crazy. No way the RLX is worth the +$60,000 new; but, excellent value and solid reliability to +150,000 in the used market. I disagree with some of your comments. Mercedes has renamed a few times... the 190E? That is essentially a C-Class today... GLK, M-Class, and GL became the the GLC, GLE, and GLS respectively (which aligned with the C, E, and S-class)... Infiniti renamed their cars and SUVs, Lincoln a few times over, etc. However one of the biggest rename flops in history is the Ford Taurus -> 500. It was so bad, FoMoCo quickly went back to the Taurus name. Porsche even revived the 718 name and prepended it to the 982 Boxster/Cayman, all to no ill-effect. BMW technically "split" their name line-up... where a 3er was split between coupe and sedan, with the sedan remaining the 3er and the coupe shifting to the newly penned 4er (to be inline with the 5er/6er and 7er/8er, etc.). Name changes aren't per se the death knell... the RL/RLX's demise was 2-fold. 1. Acura was seen by purist as more of a "near-luxury" brand... and 2. for a flagship luxury saloon, the price of admission was a V8, with Mercedes and BMW even offering V12s. Honda's refusal to put a V8 in the RL/RLX meant it would never truly challenge the incumbents. Obviously today's notions have had a major shift, with forced-induction V6's or inline-6's being sought after over V8s and V12s, means Lexus' refusal to shift mindsets quickly (hanging on to naturally aspired V8s) will be now biting them in the butt.

The RL are smooth rides, I love that mine is heavy with AWD. I call mine the Silver Bullet because the face of the car shapes downward and the rear rounds out nicely. When I step back and look at the car it’s in a Football 3 prong stance . To me it’s has a subtle aggression yet it’s VIP in a quiet way. The car still turns heads when I’m driving. Many BMW and Lexus drivers stare at my car on the streets/ highway . I’m very satisfied with it despite some rust spots it has👍

I agree that the current Acura naming is stupid and confusing. It seems so anonymous and you cannot really relate to the car behind the letters. Legend, Integra, Vigor sound so much better and they should have kept those names. Toyota would never rename the Corolla - except they actually did call it Auris in Europe for 2 generations. But they realised the mistake and now it is back to Corolla again.
@virgilwyatt4632
@virgilwyatt4632 4 жыл бұрын
Mr MMJ The current naming was done for the reason of getting people to say the sir name “Acura” instead of the given name of the model. Cadillac, Lincoln, and Audi did the same, for the same reason. (Lincoln is beginning to revert back to using a sir name/ given name format.) You have to understand that brand recognition is important to the auto industry. Honda reportedly spent $40,000.00 coming up with the name “Acura” but then that name was notably being ignored by the general public; most people using the given names “Integra”, “Vigor” and “Legend” instead. However, I do agree that the “Legend” nameplate should have remained in use in the U..S & Canadian markets. There will never be another Legend. Never say never....

Hey Kirk! It's time to understand that it's not about car names,tlx,rlx,ilx etc... It's about horrible Acura marketing job! Acura is 2nd tier 'luxury' brand and this won't change for long time. How about new 2023 Integra. You think the name Integra will help to sell more units,especially when in the past Integra was far more advanced and desired than competitors. For now Acura have 2 good suv, ilx and Tlx,which seems to be going in right direction. Type S...another good move! But simply there is no market for big sedan at this moment no matter how you name it...Rlx or Legend etc... That segment is shrinking and even for Mercedes or BMW isn't easy to sell such cars. 2020 RLX was a good luxury car, really underrated, but simply not being able to compete with premium brands. Even nowadays they have no advanced electric car or even announcements which could help Acura to build company's new image of advanced and premium brand.

100% Agree with you. Renaming a model or the whole brand is very crucial in the car industry. Just like what Johan de Nysschen did to INFINITI. He single handedly put INFINITI brand into loss by renaming the whole lineup.

Great historical context, thank you. Because the car won't be sold here in the States does not mean the car is dead. Rather, it will be sold in Europe, Asia or Canada. Also, the used car market is bigger than the new car market here in the States due to a declining middle class and income.

Japan did make one more model year of the Legend to test out its self driving tech for Japan only. I think it was +$100,000 USD, updated instrument cluster, and had self driving tech added to drive, change lanes, and navigate to a destination without driver intervention.

Once Acura got rid of the LEGEND name and the 6-Speed manual transmission, it was a wrap! The LEGEND and other manual shifting Acura's were very popular among my peers, as everyone I knew either had a LEGEND or INTEGRA, or wanted one. Once the RL replaced the LEGEND, and all sense of sportiness the LEGEND once possessed, everyone started to look elsewhere. Acura pretty much shot itself in the foot by replacing the LEGEND, and by your numbers, Acura never healed from such a foolish and costly decision! BRING BACK THE MANUALS, ACURA!!!!

In 2005 if I were to go to a acura dealership I would look at the tl and see how bubbly that it looks, unlike the sharp lines of the tsx and tl. The tl had almost the same features and a manual option (pretty much same with the tsx) the only thing that would probably convince me to purchase a rl would be for the pax tires which as they are now know to be a massive failure. If I had to pick one at the time I would pick the tsx.

Their current branding is what it used to be, precision crafted performance and the RLX was just a nice luxury car. hopefully, they release another one soon and will probably be more oriented towards sport. But I think they'll focus on the TLX and ILX more making the ILX the sporty car with the manual like the integra

Acura second gen RL and RLX have suffered a lot more than Lexus say GS, because the overall design isn’t that sophisticated. It does not look like a luxury car, rather it looks like more an upscale of a Honda Accord. On the other hand, the second gen Legend and the first gen 3.5RL were very sophisticated, the overall design looked like what the luxury car should be. In order for Acura to survive in a luxury market, they need to think what makes a luxury car? Why people buy luxury car? To me, Acura isn’t really a luxury brand comparing to Lexus or Infiniti, Acura is more like a performance brand.

First the Lexus GS and now the Acura RLX. Geeze, there are some of us out there that still prefer sedans. Guess Genesis still understands this with their 2021 G80. Wonder if more people will gravitate towards BMW and Mercedes now? Perhaps Genesis?
@NileshR12
@NileshR12 4 жыл бұрын
The RLX wasn't competitive from the start. It just looked like a larger TLX with an identical interior. They didn't do enough to make it feel special & unique. It wasn't competitive enough with midsize sedans like the 5-series, E-class, A6, Genesis sedan/ Genesis G80 (& maybe even the G90), the Lexus GS, & Infiniti M/ Q70. The big 3 German brands outpaced Acura. Acura was slow to implement major changes in the interior to upgrade it. They caused the model's demise themselves. It was so overpriced for what you get. It wasn't worth the money.

To this day, except for the NSX, the best Acura is the second-generation Acura Legend (91-95). After the RL was released in 96 things went downhill. What were they thinking taking away the Legend coupe for the CL?

The Acura RL(X) had only one gorgeous generation and the rest were either boxy (earlier models) or had a weird style that didn’t follow through, just bits here and there (later models). That good generation was the 05-08, not including the 09,10 refreshed models. The exterior was the only elegant one in the lineup favoring a bit more curves. The head and tail lights looked great and alluded to the first gen CL, another great looking Acura. And it was simply designed, not overly decorated.
