Adak used to be a vibrant Navy base with 4-5 thousand people living on the island. Today only 30-60 people live on the island. The last fish processing plant closed down in 2019. There is still a lot of infrastructure on the island but no one to maintian it.
Coming from the east Adak Island was the first inhabited Island since reaching US territory. We were finally able to refuel on diesel and get some groceries. Prices were very expensive, but we were still very happy to stock upafter the long passage.
We were also very lucky to celebrate Americas independence day for the first time in our life with the locals on the island and we are super grateful for the warm welcome we received.
