I don't know, but I've been told that the originator of the art, Mr Dong, was skilled in a style that specialized in overturning palms (Fan Zhang); he had been practicing a type of standing meditation - walking around a pole - & then he decided to combine his martial art with this meditation practice that was tied to a Daoist philosophy concerning changes (Bagua); thus he created the first Baguazhang. He decided to teach others this arts concepts or principles, but he only taught it to folks already skilled in some other martial art - & it didn't matter what other art the student knew. His first student, Mr Yin, was a Shaolin practitioner: primarily a Snake Stylist & an expert kicker who developed a very percusive style of Baguazhang (& his subsequent students added in a lot of grappling-type techniques). This style, called Yin Style Baguazhang contains 8 complete martial-art systems & 2 incomplete systems; it's common for practitioners to be exposed to all or most systems then they'll choose what suits them best - combining from different systems or specializing in one system. There are great differences between the various Yin Style Bsguazhang schools: one wouldn't know that these schools came from the same source material. Another student of Mr Dong's, a Mr Cheng, was a skilled grappler & his Cheng Style Baguazhang is very popular. One of Mr Cheng's students, a Mr Sun, developed a popular Cheng sub-style called Sun Style Baguazhang (Mr Sun was already a Xing Yi Quan master when he learned Baguazhang, so, having learned Baguazhang from a wrestler, his style of Baguazhang was well rounded with striking & grappling; later on in his life he created Sun Style Tai Ji Quan which incorporates Xing Yi Quan & Baguazhang using the Tai Ji Quan principles he learned from a couple of different Tai Ji Quan styles). I've seen some variations in Sun Style Baguazhang, but mostly minor variations (especially compared to the differences found among Yin Stylists). Unlike Yin Style Baguazhang which has many martial-art systems, Sun Style Baguazhang is a single martial-art system which has 10 forms (2 Mother Palm Forms & 8 Animal Forms). Both Yin & Sun styles have various exercises, drills, & multi-man practices in addition to their respective forms. There are other 2nd generation styles of Baguazhang besides Yin's & Cheng's - & who knows how many other sub-styles there are today, generations later? Practitioners nowadays are usually 4th generation or more from Mr Dong's original Baguazhang (& he intended that each of his students would develop their own unique Baguazhang - which they did). It's cool that Baguazhang concepts are applicable to any martial art - & that Baguazhang is all about changing.

The difference is the romanisation of the Chinese. They are the same words in English. Pakua I believe is how the Wade-Giles system romanises and Baguazhang is how the Pinyin system does it. Pinyin is the current system used by the Chinese but some academics still use the other methods - Yale university has its own system.
