As of 2021, Adam Jones is the only foreign Bonsai Master that owns and operates a Bonsai Garden in Japan. Becoming a Bonsai Master in Japan is not an easy task, even for the most skillful Japanese enthusiasts and being a foreigner makes it even more challenging yet at the same time more fulfilling.
In this video, Adam will tell us more about his story, and how he became a Bonsai Master as well as learning more about the art of Bonsai.
To learn more about Adam and his project, make sure to visit his website: www.treehousebonsai.com/

Adam, I am a fellow plant lover, the connection I have with the plants I feel you also have. I was lucky enough to realize that taking care of plants was what I wanted to do from a very young age. I’ve been in this field for almost 35 years and I try to learn something new about plants every day. Enjoyed your video, if I could ever get to Japan I’d love to visit your place. Take care.

I wish you well in realizing your dream! You have a passion and inspiration required of a master, AND the rare ability and humility to put yourself through that GRUELING five-year training period. My hats off to you. I do hope the Japanese will treat you fairly and recognize your pure spirit, hard work, and intellect. You have certainly earned my respect.
@novrinkov0053

please Don't say like the Japanese don't treat them fairly. they have been teaching all traditional arts and martial arts to foreigners since long ago. Otherwise jiu-jitsu and judo are not popular with foreigners. Don't blindly Believe Western Media's Biased Stereotypes. It is the Westerners who have not always treated other races fairly.
@novrinkov0053

These traditional jobs are difficult to assess even for those born in the Japan. Even many Japanese with his level of skill are not evaluated. Don't attribute everything to the fact that you are a foreigner. There is no reason not to give a fair evaluation just because you are a foreigner. I am not saying that all japanese are fair, but they are rare. Or, when they are not treated fairly, there is only a problem with the personality and manners of the foreigner himself. If it's not appreciated, it's simply a lack of skill and understanding. All kinds of Japanese traditional techniques are taught to foreigners. Your comment is very disrespectful to a Japanese master who accepts foreigners like family. I know a lot of japanese master who give their foreign apprentices a store or give a lot of support.
@novrinkov0053

In sumo, the Japanese even give foreigners the same rank as the Japanese gods called Yokozuna. Can you imagine a westerner giving a Japanese the same rank as a christian god? There are even foreign geisha and foreign swordsmiths in Japan. There are even foreign owners of teahouses and traditional ryokan that have been around for hundreds of years. It's funny that Westerners who still don't treat other races fairly say that. Western competitions and sports still don't treat Asians fairly.

I used to live down the street from “Ben’s House of Bonsai”. He’d been in Japan during the war, became enamored with bonsai, stayed and studied and returned to his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually had to sell his beautiful garden shop and retired. He moved to a senior apartment, and later died. His garden stock was largely bought by collectors and a local garden shop, but the buildings were going to be bulldozed. I went and “scavenged whatever I could with the contractor’s permission. I retrieved an iron lantern, lacquered shelf, stepping stones, many tools and supplies. I gave the tools and supples to a friend who is dedicated to bonsai. The stepping stones are in a memorial garden, and the lantern hangs on my balcony, with a view to the beautiful lacquered shelf. Ben gave me many lessons in pruning, and it remains my favorite gardening passion. He left such a legacy of appreciation for the art, whether it’s a mini bonsai or a larger (but still very short, under 5 feet) bonsai. Such a beautiful art!

Not to be a hater, but this sounds like some long weird flex and stretched truth. He claims to have worked 90 hour weeks every week but in reality that probably only happened a few times during peak growing season or it was because of mis-manged time. I doubt he worked 90 hour weeks mid-winter when most of the trees were in full-on hibernation, but what do I know. Still cool to hear about the journey even if it was up-hill, through the snow, both ways
