An old Slovakian project from Maros Skvarka, Adam Ondra spends three days working 9b Robin Ud, the first potential 9b in the country. The day the route finally went, the film crew picked up Adam at 10:30am at the bus station after travelling all night from Switzerland, prepared a snack for him to take with him, and went for the send. Amazing stuff.

Adam inspired me to climb the stairs without a hand on the railing. Some say it is unsustainable and eventually I'm going to fall. But it's not like I just go up unprepared. I have climbed those stairs using the railing many times. I know where all the good steps and holds are. I am careful to be sure I am able to down climb it if I get into an unsafe spot. When you have a certain level of skill, free stair solo looks more difficult than it really is. People are always asking my wife if she worries I will fall to my death or maybe to a bruise. Her reply is always the same: "It is his life and he has to choose his own path. But if he doesn't clean all that damn chalk off the stairs, I'm going to push him down myself."

There's so much to say about this kid... such an inspiration. Is a beast at both Bolder & Lead, attending uni at the same time traveling around the world climbing the best outdoor routes & winning IFSC comps. in both disciplines, & the guy speaks a half dozen languages. Geez... such a BEAST! I hope to one day meet him, beyond all the aforementioned things he seems like a genuinely nice and down to earth guy to be around.

I read in an interview from Ondra that his hip flexibility is his greatest strength. This is refreshing because having worked at a wall you realise how little a lot of climbers stretch and how high the injury rate is! If climbers took core conditioning and flexibility as seriously as gymnasts I wonder how much harder the average climber would be climbing...

So what I can gather about all things indoor/outdoor climbing is that above a certain difficulty you need to be able to work through tremendous mental and physical suffering. It also looks like best are madly obssesed eith climbing and they eat, sleep, and breath climbing.

Robin Úd. Úd has 2 meanings in Slovak language. First is "limb" (part of body) and second is "penis". As the route is 9b, I would definitely go with the latter alternative. :)

The bolter will often put a string or something on a route, meaning it hasn't been redpointed yet. It's to give the bolter a shot at getting the first ascent. It's funny that he does that on a 15b, because he's one of a handful of people that can get it.

Do they consider those kneepad things cheating? He can lock in positions and rest for example 4.40 which his skin would not usually allow.
@ismananthek1943
@ismananthek1943 7 жыл бұрын
Yup. And with shoes he can step onto rock formations that would break his skin. So "they" do not consider those kneepads cheating but something you wear to be able to make more attempts in a shorter period of time. Besides: sharp rock still hurts through them.

Who grades these routes just curious
@ricato2
@ricato2 5 жыл бұрын
Usually the first person to climb the route suggests a grade. Then the second person to climb it either confirms, or up/down-grades. If those two people disagree it's uncertain until a third person comes along. After that you rarely get anyone disagreeing, so the grade is pretty certain. In general these climbers are good at grading, but you should still feel more confident in a grade the more people have climbed the route and agreed.
