"Wykrot" is a characteristic piece of Białowieża Forest landscape (Puszcza Białowieska). It's created by a natural falling tree that takes the root system with it, so that part of it is being exposed above the ground. The fallen tree may lose it's majestic beauty, but it does not loose it's role in the ecosystem. Quite the opposite. It becomes home to many species of rodents, insects, fungus. Slowly it becomes a part of the forest biomass. In the hole created by the lifted root system we can find resting boars, wolves are often giving birth to their cubs there. Żubr, an animal from the ox family can be found resting in this pan in the ground too.
Protecting Puszcza Białowieska and it's fragile natural state has not only the effect of survival of particular species, but whole systems that many of them are creating. One event in the forest may affect their life or end it.
European Court of Justice ordered Polish Ministry of Environment to cease the cutting in Puszcza Białowieska at once. The decision is temporary and applies untill the final judgment in this case.
Heavy mashines that are still working in the forest, despite the ban, can cut down up to 200 trees a day.
