This could be a pretty severe case of tampering. Kirk is a high profile QB $$. Top 5 in NFL career earnings. #1 Free agent this offseason. Vikings were actively trying to work a deal out before FA, and the Falcons were able to sign him post tampering. When you start adding it up this is the most prestigious tampering case in NFL history.

Any penalty involving draft capital, outside of a pick swap between MIN-ATL, won’t be applied until next year. The NFL isn’t going to cripple any team with such short notice.

Dude, you're missing the point!!! The Cardinals tampered with an assistant coach, but they admitted and worked out the pick swap with the Eagles. This is way above what the Cardinals did!!! Falcons tampered with the top free agent and most prominent QB in this free agent class, plus FALCONS DENIED the whole thing. The Vikings have filed a complaint and after the NFL is done, you will be looking at a minimum of pick 8 swap for pick 11, or a more severe punishment would be pick 8 swap for pick 23 or this years 2nd rounder plus next years 3rd rounder. There is no way Falcons will get away with cheating while the rest of the NFL and the entire world is waiting for a verdict. This stripping of the Falcons will be to send a strong message to teams that the NFL is serious about tampering. Arthur Blank has already acknowledged the Falcons will accept whatever punishment the NFL decides so perhaps he already knew they were guilty.

Vikings fan here, but not trying to troll at all. I’m just curious what y’all are thinking what the outcome of this will be since this has been an under-the-radar storyline that drastically impacts both our teams. Doubt they make you forfeit the pick straight up, but could see a situation where they force a swap this week from 8 to either 11 or 23 given there being precedent of that last year. I think the Vikings could make the argument that Kirk was playing at an MVP level last year and the objective measurement of an $180M contract warrants a pick swap. The NFL rule book has pretty harsh language for tampering and I could see them trying to make an “example” of the Falcons given how clear of a case this seems. But obviously I’m biased here and figured anything can happen With that being said, I love Kirk and hope y’all enjoy him too. Your team is built for his play style and I look forward to seeing what he can do with Bijan in the backfield.

I don’t expect anything to happen this season. It will probably be a 2025 and 2026 pick. If it is based on what is out there then it will probably be a 3rd or later pick loss next year and a later in 2026 like KC. He mentioned talking to the trainer on Tuesday after agreeing on Monday so at that time he was leaving Minnesota. I wouldn’t expect anything this year either way if it isn’t announced soon because every other team that violated the tampering rule got a chance to appeal.

@@scottburns5302 yeah I think that’s definitely a valid rationale. I think that I personally think that the scale of this case trumps previous ones in recent memory given the caliber of player is unprecedented (4yr/$180M franchise QB) and would therefore be for more than a 3rd. From what I’ve been hearing from Vikings reporters, apparently they’re going to try to argue that they were in the midst of negotiating what will likely be the largest non-QB contract in NFL history for Justin Jefferson and that the Falcons tampering hindered their ability to do so and they should therefore be compensated for it (full disclosure, Kirk was gone and this isn’t a real reason but I’m sure they’ll milk it). As for the trainer situation, I believe he said he met with them, which contextually is pretty big given he’s coming off of a torn Achilles and the signing was announced an hour after the start of the new year. I personally doubt the Falcons would be reckless enough to offer that type of money + guarantees unless their own doctors were able to evaluate, so I think that that definitely factors in as having an advantage over other teams and “hindering” (again, we weren’t going to re-sign him) the Vikings ability to negotiate with first-rights. Tbh I think punishment gets handed out this year if the two teams settle like PHI/AZ did. But if they don’t, it could take a lot of time to get litigated and for the NFL to come to a decision. We likely won’t know for sure until the morning of the actual draft because the NFL has shown that they have zero problem with handing down punishments on draft day a la last year.

@@JT-qo9ej He said met and changed it to spoke to. He was taken for a physical as soon as the league year started so the process was extremely fast. I get the idea that there should basically be a "qb tax" but I think most people knew once his dead money hit, he was done in Minnesota. He even mentioned he gave them until he accepted the contract on Monday so from that statement, the only thing that hindered MIN was themselves. I don't expect them to settle because they didn't truly hinder MIN based on what is out there. If they settle, it is likely that they did more than we will ever know. Truthfully, if the penalty is next year, if I was managing the Falcons, I would go out of my way to make to lower the value of the pick this season. Get the team in the playoffs and make a run so you are in the 20s instead of the top half to make losing it more manageable.

I think the main reason the investigation has taken as long as it has would be that the league was looking to see just how far back did it start. Cousins and his wife were looking at properties in the Atlanta area about a week after the regular season ended. Did it begin then? When Cousins agent began distributing videos of Kirk doing workouts, did that prompt the Falcons to put out feelers via Kyle Pitts? At the combine Vikings head coach Kevin O Connell stated on live television that "front office types" from a specific team were openly negotiating with Cousins agent Mike McCartney. A lot of questions will be answered in the coming days.

The question is, last year the eagles/cardinals mediated their own pick swap before the league ruled. Would ATL be willing to swap 8 for 23 or not and risk losing their 1st or 2nd round pick? To me, it would make sense to trade 1sts even if they drop to 23 rather than losing a pick for nothing. If u look at draft trade charts, swapping those 1sts makes more sense for the falcons

I’m not so sure of that bud. Falcons just tampered with and acquired a high profile QB for a large contract. The chiefs lost a 3rd and a 5th for a mid tier WR and didn’t even get him signed. In 2016 the NFL said they wanted to come after teams harder for tampering. This is the biggest case of tampering since then. And you know how the NFL is when it comes to QBs. Pretty sure they about to lay down the hammer.

If you announce picks taken away the day before the draft, that throws off all the draft planning and have to regroup within a short notice. It’s likely to be next years picks.

Back in 2016, when Cousins franchise tag was expiring with the Redskins, Patrick Peterson and Larry Fitzgerald picked up Kirk Cousins at the airport to recruit him for the Cardinals. They, and an O-Lineman, whose name I forget, played a few rounds of golf together, trying to bring him on board with AZ, back when Dan Snyder was dragging his feet on resigning Kirk. And Cousins talking with some of the assistant training staff and telling them how he looks forward to meeting them soon, isn't the same, or on nearly the same level as if Cousins had met with the HC or GM or team owner. I don't think this amounts to a hill of beans.

The only way a pick swap happens is if the teams settle the dispute on their own. Tired of seeing and hearing people talk about things they have no idea about

Even if they did take our first round pick for the first time in a long time we've made good choices in the off-season and I'm okay with that decision if it comes down to it. Don't get me wrong we still have a lot of work to do on defense but I have faith in our coach for once.
