Charles J. Orth was born in Bavaria in 1867 but went to the USA with his family while still a child. His novelty piece "In a Clock Store" is probably what he's best known for (if at all) today. On this 1968 Reader's Digest LP, with the RPO conducted by James Walker, the producer (Charles Gerhardt) goes to town with as many clock effects as he can muster!

Oh, my. I haven't heard this in almost 40 years. Even so, each note, and melody was instantly anticipated. It was if I had heard it every day. This used to be the song I listened to before falling asleep. I tried to anticipate the final crescendo, and conduct it at exactly the moment it began. I'm smiling. My heart is full.

My grandparents had this record in the 1970s and I loved it - how brilliant just to see the cover art let alone hear it

I had the pleasure of this being conducted to me at Disney Land - and I was in the percussion section!! We had so much fun :-)

I had the pleasure of conducting this piece - about 45 years ago! I remember that although we used the standard orchestral parts for woodwind, brass and strings, my percussionist and I compiled a "special" percussion part which brought in Orth's original as far as we could, but also introduced other effects, with a number of clocks and devices placed prominently so that the audience could see what was going on. Brought the house down!!! Thanks so much for providing this superb recording of a rarely heard novelty piece - I only looked for a KZfaq recording because I came across the set of orchestral parts while looking for something else entirely!

Thank you very much for uploading this piece. It touches me hearing it again. As a little child, my father played it often, as part of a Readers Digest collection; I have very good memories and am thankful he introduced me to classical music.

I still have this record and the "Music for You" boxed collection from my parents, though I now need to buy a record player (and find the space in a small Parisian flat to put it!). Thank you so much for posting this, @adam28xx

Any Philly-area viewers who recognize this song? (It's used in the Macy's Christmas light show--formerly John Wanamaker's--during a sequence with clocks.)

Just been looking for this version (RPO). Impossible (almost) to download pure audio version without site timeouts, or worse, sites trying to download search changing malware. I used to listen to it years ago on the 'Eric Robinson Music For You' RD set. I just loved all the clocks at the time. Thanks for the upload.

What's fun is we bought an old used baby grand piano some years ago for $300, and it has "Chas J Orth" emblazoned across the front. I don't know if he built it or just stuck his name on it. :)

My old 12" acoustic Victor shellac disk plays a very nice rendition, but it's shorter. After the 3:25 point, it becomes recognizable. The apprenctice, whistling, opens the shop and when the clocks run down, winds them up.

"Like" on 10 September. I am 72 years old, and I think this may be the first time I have heard this gem. BTW, perhaps you were thinking of John Orth as the composer?

I'm glad you like this "novelty" piece. As to Orth, there were two of them! ... Carl (Charles) Joseph Orth (1867-1921) was a Milwaukee pianist, music publisher and the composer of this piece. John Orth was born in Bavaria in 1850 but was brought to the USA when still a child. He too was a pianist and composer and he died in Boston in 1932. The comment down below ascribing this work to George Voelker Jr. is incorrect. He composed "A Hunt in the Black Forest" which is on the same Readers Digest LP as "In a Clock Store," so that's where the confusion may lie! Incidentally I've uploaded an old 78 of "A Hunt in the Black Forest" so have a listen to that too ... it's hilarious! ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLyDltaptLezY2Q.html

This work was composed by George Voelker, Junior, who also composed "Hunt in the Black Forest" replete with bird singing and other sound effect, just as this work also has its sound effects. Disney used it for an animated film and it had been recorded by several companies on 78 rpm. I can find very little information about this composer. Anyone know anything beyond these comments?
