Assembly today - this HP came in with a busted fan, causing a "The system has detected that a cooling fan is not operating correctly" error message on POST. The top case (palmrest) was also busted, so we're replacing both and chucking in an SSD for good measure.

It's usually a good practice to reinstall a plastic insulation layer (clear film) in this case it not only holds touchpad flex, but also helps with water spills (a little) and more important provides insulation between board and bare metal covering the keyboard, otherwise with flex and maybe excessive force hammering the keys could lead to shorting the board.

Through my experience, when I am replacing thermal paste / cleaning, I also take off cover of a fan, because several times I saw ton of dust near fan blades and sometimes it was causing fan not to spin or it on the way and through time it would just accumulate even more dust. I also dust off fan.

Currently using a HP ProBook 430 G5 as my go-to laptop, just over 3 years in (when the statutory warranty expired) the fan started wobbling and scraping. Fortunately it was relatively cheap and easy to fix, once I finally managed to crack into the chassis.

Great and educational video as usual! The inside of the bottom shell looked very discoloured and dirty; does it normally look like that? More importantly, I'd suggest you check the battery for any signs of swelling on the grounds that it's better to catch that early. The battery might also be a possible up-sell: "How has the battery life been? ... I can do you a new battery for £X". Keep up the good work.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 жыл бұрын
I find they often look like that, I think it's just manufacturing. They don't make any effort to leave a finish on the inside because that bit's not on show, so they often look dirty and splattered from the factory. There's a bit of dirt in there as well which can be cleaned, but not so much as to make a meaningful difference.

Most HP laptops aren’t bad, but there are a few exceptions. Take the Pavilion DV9730nr for example. It has a GeForce 8600m GS which due to a manufacturing flaw in the chip, runs REALLY hot. HP put a tiny little heat sink on it that would probably struggle to cool a modern celeron, and then on top of that there was a bug in tho bios which prevented the fan from spinning full speed.

7:05 "A weird mix of UI and Command line" that's called a TUI "Terminal User Interface" or "Text-based User Interface". Basically means it's an entire UI is made of text in the terminal. as opposed to what I think you're thinking of is a GUI "Graphical User Interface" and then there's a CLI "Command Line Interface" which is basically something like fdisk or something. all of these are a "UI" though so you're not technically wrong anyways.

Have you tried lubricating the hinges and the fan before? If the fan is really well jammed up like this one, chances are lubricating it (usually on modern fans the centre rotor comes straight out) might just fix the problem altogether and the fan works as good as new once you clean it. As for the hinges I am afraid if you don't lubricate them the bottom cover is gonna break in the near future again because hinges can get stiff over time when dust enters into the mechanism
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 жыл бұрын
I've never tried lubricating hinges, mainly because in 10 years I've never had a laptop come back with broken hinges a second time. But people keep suggesting it, so I'll give it a try on the next one and see what kind of difference in feel there is 👌 Fans, yea I've tried refurbing them. Sometimes they last sometimes they don't. And if it doesn't last, the laptop will be back again in a week with the customer saying "I paid you £XXX and it's doing exactly the same thing". Fans are cheap, my policy is to just replace them.

Did you actually fix the problem? The big problem with cracked cases is the hinges are too tight or bound. Sometimes you can adjust the tension on the hinges. Other times, add a light oil to the hinges to make less stress on the case. Great video!

The ‘software service’ do you charge separately for that or is just part of the job all in? I imagine it can take a while to do all the updates etc.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 жыл бұрын
Yea it's all included. There's not a huge amount of updates for windows 10, main thing is usually the build update. Most people are never on the latest build of windows, so I manually update that so they're not hit with a big update at random.
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 2 жыл бұрын
I've never had issues with a build update. But also, as far as I'm concerned, if a laptop is in for service it _is_ my problem. I'm being paid to install the updates and make sure that install goes through properly. Exception to the rule is if the device is being using for audio engineering / music creation - those are always a house of cards with DAW software, interfaces, plugins, and licences.

@@Adamant_IT It depends on the type of service the customer asks for. That's a can of worms I wouldn't open unless they asked. I guess you are dealing with noobs who have no clue so it's ok since they won't care either way. But if I brought my laptop in for a repair and I found that it had been updated to Win10 (I run Win7) I would be advising my lawyer who would be knocking at your door asking questions ;-)

Try the HDMI output to see if there's a picture there. Need to establish if the laptop is POSTing or not. If there's a picture over HDMI, the chances are it's a backlight or LCD problem. If there's no picture over HDMI, I'd start with a BIOS reset, and reseat the RAM modules.

I'm not aware of any supplier, as such. If you need to build up a collection though, finding a bunch of dead laptops being thrown out (local recycler? local waste disposal?) and stripping them for screws would be a good start. Some generic M2.5x5 screws would probably cover a lot of use cases as well.
