Lenovo ThinkPad T450s with No Backlight after new LCD - LFC

This ThinkPad has two batteries. You take out the external one, think its powered off, change the LCD and then the always-hot backlight rail gets shorted to ground and blows the backlight fuse because there's still power from the internal battery.

I agree. Sincere thanks for your answer. Removing the Connectors as done here is absolutely fine. If I want to be sure, I use a single wire with double alligator terminals. One alligator direct to ground (screw hole) and on the other alligator add any 1W [1 - 15] ohm resistor to touch each individual pin. Damaged test terminals (power supply or a multimeter), previously measuring the continuity of the wire to be used, serve this purpose. On the other hand, already skirting the limits of exaggeration; I cover with black or kapton tape the cable that goes to the screen and also the connector on the motherboard. I do this to any laptop. All the best.

Just need to make sure the second battery is disabled in the bios prior so there is no need to open it up to disconnect it, I replaced the screen on my Thinkpad T440 which is very similar to this and had no issues. Really interesting repair, part of my job is looking after a fleet of these laptops. While I like the modularity of the design, it's far too easy to get caught out by the Internal batteries in these. You can turn the charging circuit off for the internal battery in the UEFI by pressing Enter, F1, and under Power there is the 'Disable Internal Battery' option at the very end of the list. This will even work on devices with a BIOS Supervisor Password or Power-On-Password applied to the laptop, you just need to press the enter key again when prompted. The battery is enabled again once the charger is plugged back into the laptop.

Interesting! A lot of overengineering purely for the sake of being able to hot-swap batteries it seems. I've never heard of anyone who's actually _needed_ to be able to hot-swap a battery though.

Hi there. Just some info: if you removed the 2 rubber tabs under the external removable battery, you would have been able to slide the keyboard cover back easily using the 2 indents on the the left and right of the keyboard, exposing the screws to undo the keyboard. Secondly, the internal battery can be disabled in the bios to make it easier before working on the logic board or lcd.

NOPE, cos if they did that, customers would replace the fuse, it goes bang and they then put a bigger one in or a shorting link across it. Then they bring it to a repairer and say "dunno what's wrong wiv it, it just stopped". Repairer has a ten times more difficult job to fix it. Been there, got the Tee Shirt, book, badge and plenty of kit that customers "broke" trying to repair it themselves. That's why they put labels on like "NO CONSUMER REPAIRABLE PARTS INSIDE". If it can't be fixed by turning it off and on again, leave it to the experts like Graham.

The T440p is different from the T440 & T440s. The T440p only has 2 or 4 screws that are revealed when the keyboard "cover" is slide up to expose them. The back cover is a dream to remove with only 2 screws holding it in. Just remember to slide the back cover off the clips. Being used to earlier Lenovos I went and pried the cover off and broke 13 clips in the process. Fortunately Lenovo were very good and replace the AUD$103 back cover under warranty. 🤫

In this case if the LCD was totally gone and there was no way to connect an external monitor you simply could not do it. The HMM is readily available to any one on lenovos support web site. Stupid question, can you put Fuse or capacitor or resistor the wrong way? "Upside down" ??
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 3 жыл бұрын
Fuses are non-polarised, so work any way up. They're just a bit of wire after all, albeit a bit of wire that's designed to break under specific conditions. Capacitors it depends. MLCC, the little brown guys, are also non-polarised and go in any way. However, you also get polarised capacitors which have a positive terminal. They're generally the bigger bois, and are marked with a + or a Line at one end.
@IIGrayfoxII
@IIGrayfoxII 3 жыл бұрын
If by upside down you mean + to ground and - to power Yes and No Polarity matters on diodes and on electrolytic capacitors. Otherwise polarity does not matter on a fuse, resistor or a non electrolytic capacitor. If unsure, match polarity. But if you mean have the component physically upside down on the PCB. It wont hurt assuming the top of the component has the metal tab for solder to make a connection against.

With those Lenovo keyboards, if the laptop is fairly new, once you remove the few keyboard screws in back they're typically fairly easy to slid the bezel up to reveal the screws. Probably had some crap in there like liquid that had gotten sticky or crumbs that jammed it up.

On a thinkpad you MUST disconnect the battery to do this. This is because thinkpads are known to have overly protective fuses that are guaranteed to wreck havoc to you when you even remove a keyboard when the laptop isn't fully shut off

You can also disconnect the internal battery from the BIOS for servicing, you don't need to open the laptop to do it. You do need to know that it's there.

Yes, do your research prior to servicing these units.

You have just fixed one of these . Can you answer a question for me . Does it show two batteries on the taskbar ?? O.k , found it , you have to go to the taskbar and expand it then it shows both as battery 1 and battery 2 . Few people have had issues with it just showing one after a windows 10 update , maybe thats why the previous repair person thought it was dead

You need to buy some electric tweezers for that kind of work - no hot air needed - suggestion only

Yea I really want Miniware or Pine64 or someone like that to make some nice affordable ones. I don't fancy the cost of some decent ones that I'll hardly use, and the last time I tried buying cheap ones they were just terrible.

Looks like a T450, had one that came with a god-awful TN screen, swapped a IPS panel in. Works fine but in Windows there's no Backlight control, only in Linux for some reason.

Have you never replaced the keyboard on it?
@JoshuaG

@@josephking6515 Not yet , over the 5 years of owning this laptop , the repairs and maintenance i've done is repasting the laptop , cleaning and RAM upgrade. Battery was just busted this year 2021. As for the keyboard , none of the keys so far have been acting weird, i clean under the keys to remove some of the dust accumulated using a very light, dry and used paintbrush.

Thanks @Adamant IT for the nice video. Would you be able to share technical specs you used to repair this one like air temperature, fuse model and amperage, soldering flux/paste specs, etc?
