this video was extremely insightful. Being on social media for years now you tend to forget to sometimes take a step back, get away from this what feels like to be a competition of who can push out more artworks in a certain period of time. I think that patience and thoughtfulness was a key factor missing in my art, thanks a lot for sharing this !

I completely agree with the fact that the world is going way too fast because of technology. One of the reasons why I take 20+ hours to finish a painting is because I fall in love with the process of it & it helps me to slow down. I used to draw Mandalas in the past too, and I can say with conviction that it takes a loooong time to get all those details inside the concentric circles to make sense when put together. Thank you for reminding us to practice patience, resilience and to stay hungry for knowledge from all walks of Life ❤

i've been so focused on finishing art school and feeling totally lost with what to do that it took me until today, a month into the break, to realize i really missed your videos. i'd spend hours working and listening to you and other art tubers and have this sense of peace the whole time. school drilled some sort of mania into me with the tight revolving door of deadlines. looking forward to finding this peace again.

In comics, the product's compatibility matters more than its quality. So, Adam, may consider making a video on accepting the task of creating things we don't like while maintaining our sanity? People that are forced to follow the industry trends to keep a job appreciate it immensely.

As a tattooer, I appreciate the bit you talk about regarding the intentionality of each line placed. It's funny though because that is the only time these days that I feel that slowed-down intentionality while art making. In just about any other medium I feel that 21st century-afflicted monkey mind chattering about speed. Thank you for sharing your re-introduction of calligraphy into your creativity. It inspires me to try a completely different medium to slow my ass down. Another great video, Adam! 🙏

I really struggle to get my thoughts together to type them, but here goes : Thank you for this art talk. I appreciate the discussion you're promoting around AI, but I realy do love your art talks about the creative and spiritual side of art. I particularly loved listening to you speak on the forced speed that seems to be pushing us to experience "more" of life faster. Even though I'm quite young at 20-ish, I've found that there really is no such thing as "more." I haven't found more than 24 hours in a day. Part of the joy of art is that you spend time in a lovely state where you soak up as much of life as possible. Time carefully spent on observing the details of my sensory experience as a human, especially the mundane has brought me more life than anything else. Hope that came out okay, I'm tired. Looking forward to your next video.

That's awesome. I remember when I learned A LOT about painting when I learned more about miniature painting. It's completely different but a lot of the same principals apply and it really helped convey to my artistic brain what I have to do in certain situations.

Great talk as always Adam. Regarding your point on patience and taking our time, that is something that has been going through my mind a lot lately. Having spent so much time watching time lapse videos (at say 4x speed) trying to understand the artist's process it can be easy to forget that they are giving careful consideration (or using intuition re-enforced by years of careful consideration) to each action they make on the piece. I know that sounds really obvious, but even though I'm aware they aren't painting at that speed there can still be a bit of cognitive dissonance where I'm subconciously expecting myself to produce art faster because I'm continuously watching sped up footage - so it's really important to balance that out with watching people create in real time too. Something that has really helped me with this is imagining that a person is sitting next to me or that I'm giving a live demonstration where I'm required to explain the thought process behind pretty much everything that I'm doing, this is forcing me to be mindful of my execution, sometimes anyway! KZfaq's playback speed feature is also something I would recommend for people who binge timelapses, stick the video on 0.25 speed and remind yourself that the artist is not superhuman.

when I was in USAF, I worked grave yard shift for 6 years, it was always moving to see the sun rise, knowing most other 'normal" humans were still asleep and missing this beautiful scene. how the colors of the sky would change over time from dark purple to lighter purple toward a slight reddish to yellowish sky. how quiet and serene it was. I worked at an amusement/vending company from mid to late 90s. my video game of choice was San Fransico Rush.

There is nothing like shooting film (even Polaroid). Taking photos with an analog device requires you to go through the whole process of taking the shot, processing the film, doing a multii-exposure test strip, and then outputting the final image onto paper using whatever tricks you can to dodge and burn the areas that needed that treatment. One of the other nice things about film is that it slows that photographer down beCause of the expense in the photography medium makes you think twice to before pressing that button. Yes, I have to say that photography has made a huge difference in my art.

So much food for thought and so timely! With all of the AI conversations happening I’ve moved away from both the internet and digital media… not completely but a bit. Like you I have taken up other manual art forms, in my case a return to book binding and exploring watercolor theory on good paper in handmade notebooks. It has reminded me of what I love about artistic expression. Your comment on photography was also amazing. I would argue that photography itself is an art medium that leads to spectacular results for photographers that maximize their use of theory and the medium. That being said, there is so much that can by applied to other artistic expressions. I highly recommend James Gurney’s book on Light and Color. It touches on many of the points you made and talks about the difference between using photo references and plein air for realistic painting.

You talking about the insane speed that took over our daily life and pretty much all our actions resonated with me a lot. It also shows in film. The beginning of "Once upon a time in the west", for example, would be almost unbarable to watch for many people nowadays because by now, we are so used to very fast cuts and the story progressing quickly. It is scary to think about when I felt bored the last time. Really cannot remember. Allowing yourself to slow down and do things more mindfully is an important skill that got lost almost completely, in my opinion. Maybe trying to do less and to do the things we do more intentionally helps to feel connected to the present more. I really miss that and I'm scared to fast forward through my life skipping important memories just to fulfill unquestioned expectations and routines. Thank you for the reminder!

Lovely and inspiring as usual Adam. Very timely for me too, you somehow always have the exact advice that I need at the exact right time. This summer has been bonkers and this was a great reminder to throttle back and smell the roses a bit rather than just relentlessly cranking things out. I totally agree about the interdisciplinary stuff too. The more I learn about photography and lens behavior the better informed my paintings seem to be. I also need to say that you must be the most thoughtful and measured speaker on the internet so I think this is advice that you are uniquely equal well qualified to give. Have a great summer and whip a few asses on the chess board!

As a someone with adhd who scribbled since I could hold anything that could stain paper i decided, at 22 years, I want to create art. Because I didnt know anything ,every piece of knowledge was big leap for me, but then it stopped and I started getting into the mindset of "gotten knowledge or progress / time spent". It was the worst thing that could've happen. I noticed that everything i knew i was forgetting during the process of creating because i wanted fast results, which resulted in tons of art half-way finished without any sense of story telling, bad color theory or perspective. The faster and efficient i tried to be, the more life it drained from my paintings.. Currently trying to get back to basics, drawing rocks and trees, focusing more on color, light or composition and thinking about every step i take.

As an almost 2-years-old-tattoer I find that the times were I pull a line and it doesn't end up how I would've wanted it, it's because I'm not being calm, mindful, and have an intention behind every line and curve. Nowadays it doesn't happen that much, but every now and then the anxious rhythm of the world we live in can creep in without a notice and pull you out of your own.

Crazy how much you have to control your mindset when tattooing If it’s any consolation, there are little mistakes in my tattoos and I like them - they remind me of the ARTIST behind the masterpiece :)

Oh man, as someone who has been struggling with an undiagnosed case of ADHD for most of their life, learning to slow down is something I'm having to do. I make a lot of mistakes and errors while drawing because of my impatience, but when I take my time and get caught up in the process and not the desire for an instant finished result, it comes out a lot better.

Thank you for this. I feel I understood why I'm having difficulty with drawing, everything doesn't feel like it used before but I still want to draw.... and yeah, I just have to slow down. It feels really hard than saying of course since I remember one of my "art" teacher throw my drawing away because I drew it too detail. He said I shouldn't put much effort on it because this isn't a drawing that he wants. And all my drawings back then was fast pace drawings trying to please my teacher and just to see what works best. And now... I lose my own artistic self and passion. If I could turn the time back, I wish I never met all those "art" teachers during my diploma. But I know the future me would wish I get out from this sad loop of unable to draw again sooner so I'll push myself to make art, this time hopefully slower and more thoughtfulness like being young again...

Hey Adam, I love your videos as always. I'm currently watching an older video of yours (i was still drawing after watching this one) and one subject i would be interested in hearing more about would be something you mentioned in "relationships that are toxic for art careers". Mainly the point that it felt like infidelity to your ex-partner when you were studying nudes. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts about that. How to work on being less insecure in the relationship when the partner is drawing other people they are attracted to and express their fantasies in that way.
