Near the start of the film Oliver said he didn’t smoke & then a couple scenes later he’s spying on Felix with a cigarette in his mouth. Such a liar 😂 🤥. I couldn’t take my eyes off him throughout. Barry Keoghan is a fabulous actor 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I find this film so interesting, because i really don’t think Saltburn was his goal from the beginning. I think it all stemmed from his obsession with Felix, he did everything and anything to keep him close and avoid rejection. but Felix’s fate was sealed when he started to see Oliver for who he really was, when Oliver realizes there’s no coming back from it, that’s when he kills him. and I think he immediately regretted it. even when it briefly cuts back to present-day Ollie during Felix’s death, he’s still crying. when Felix invites him over, he says he can go home whenever he wants, present-day Oliver says “And I believed him.” I think it’s cause after Felix was gone, he felt like he had no choice, he *needed* to stay at Saltburn. Saltburn had to become the new obsession, something to blur his infatuation over Felix with. I also think it makes sense that Oliver would lie during his monologue, I mean throughout the film he’s proven the fact he’s a liar, and yet, he’s narrating the story for us. trying to make himself out to be this mastermind who had a plan from the beginning and was driven by economic resentment despite the fact he’s not even poor, i can see how in reality, he’d just be making the best out of the situation he ruined. there is an insane amount of details in this film that i could probably spend hours looking through, i actually didn’t like the film on the initial watch, but after it sat in my brain for a day, i realized i really did. sorry for the rant, i’ve been hyper-fixated on this film since it came out lol.

Lol i totally understand. Interesting theory but the thing that I think debunks it is at the end Ollie admits he never loved Felix, he just hated him. It felt like an actual moment of honesty (at long last lol)

@@AdamfromFWCI we know from Emerald (director) that Oliver was apparently “profoundly in love” with Felix (in her words), but most of everything else i said is just theory and waffle hah, i find it really interesting how she talks about it actually, as she says: “Oliver’s profoundly in love with Felix. The first thing he says is he *wasn’t* in love with him. And we know that’s a lie. And the film shows us that’s a lie, and to what degree that is a lie he tells himself? i don’t know.” she always says something along the lines of “well, it’s depicted in the film.” which is so cool! she leaves things perfectly open-ended for people to go back through and absorb those details that unravel the characters, and make their own conclusions about them. just so brilliant. really enjoyed your reaction by the way! i realize i forgot to say that in my original comment hah x

No worries, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And there's no harm in speculation over this kind of thing. I do kinda like the idea of Ollie lying right off the bat and then insulating himself further at the end when he says "I just hated him" Another great moment is him letting himself into the gate of Saltburn.... its eery on the second watch

He is definitely an unreliable narrator he lies directly to his audience several times, I think, he has convinced himself that he hated Felix as a way to reconcile to himself that he k8lled him. Henis clearly deeply in love with Felix throughout the film and even after it all falls apart and Felix rejects him and he puts the drugs in the champagne he etill gives him one more chance in the maze to forgive him and be with him, it's only after he is completly rejected that he thrusts the bottle into Felix's hands and kills him. Oliver couldn't have Felix so he kills him and decides to become him and attempt to take everything that was Felix's for himself. I think one of his most honest moments was in the maze when he tells Felix he only lied to create a story for him, and that he is his only friend and that he loves him.

The pull of the full moon really does mess with us. My mom was a labor & delivery nurse for decades and the full moon put people into labor 😂 She knew the rooms would be full that night. If she was only “on call” those nights, she would just treat it as a normal shift bc she knew they would need her 🤣

You mentioned the tension, and its also what sticks with me from this movie. Anxious alarm bells bubbling away, louder and louder throughout the movie. Even when they were still in college, you could feel something wasn't quite right, but couldn't put your finger on it yet. The explicit scenes didnt feel gratuitous once you put it at all together. But when they're happening, its like uhhhhh is this necessary??? I wouldnt change a thing about it. The reddened room after the curtains are drawn is my favorite scene, and Ollie in the bath with the bloody mouth is my favorite shot. Stunning movie visually and emotionally.

Brilliant reaction! I burst out laughing every time you gasped, especially when we meet Ollie's parents and the reveal at the end. I love the tone of this movie. It's a dark dramedy a la Cruel Intentions or Heathers, and the cinematography and editing is incredible. The film has a way of playing with the audience's expectations and satirizing how out of touch the upper class is. Since Ollie targeted Felix from the start, my take on his character is that he's an obssessive sociopath who envies the privilege of the uber rich so he first targets Felix as his way in but when that does't go to plan he takes down everyone one by one. My favorite line is when he tells Elspeth at the end, "Unlike you, I actually know how to work" 😂

I think he had this plan way way before he even arrived at school. The one thing I can't figure out is if the trip to his parents house was planned by Ollie or not. He left his phone, I dunno he's so crafty and deceptive, where does it end?

Emptying the throne (twice) and make himself the King of 60 million people... There you have it! I wount claim the rights to the script 😊 , You're welcome.

My mum is an alcholic, abusive. She doesnt look like one. Everyone thinks shes a great mum when shes far from it. Dont judge a book by its cover! What i will say, is the scene of Felix taking Oliver to his parents. If Oliver is telling the truth then Felix is bringing him to someone who abused him, neglected him, traumatised him. He has every right to freak out. Obv we know different now but still i know what that feels like to be forced to face someone who nearly ended ur life as a baby all through ur childhood. Its messed up
