The N64 was a weird one. My only memories of it were that it arrived too late to the fifth gen party to make much of an impact. The decision to use cartridges hurt it badly, but I think it was the PlayStation's success that really killed its chances - it was simply unstoppable by that point. What might have happened if only Nintendo had swallowed their pride and gone with CD’s…
@anthonyettner9981

If Nintendo 64 used CD-ROM, some third-party developers wouldn't have jumped from Nintendo. I really think a lot of RPG games, multi-plats, and DLCs being on the PlayStation and how it was advertised was the reason why it sold way more consoles than the N64. Even with the PlayStation they didn't have enough room to fit Final Fantasy VII on 1 CD-ROM and it sold like crazy. I never would have thought the N64 would have only sold 33 million consoles.

It really didn't come too late-- in 96 a lot of people were still waiting on what Nintendo was going to bring before deciding to buy. The problem was no one wanted to develop for it

Objectively I know the N64 isn’t the best console ever, but quite simply it is my favourite. I think for some (not all) people there are those years from around 10ish through to late teens where the lack of responsibility and more free-time lend itself beautifully to gaming. And during that time there’s that one console that just comes along in that sweet spot. The N64 is that console for me. It gave me so many great memories. I love it.

Well, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered one of the greatest games ever written (even being the first game to score a perfect 40 in Famitsu Magazine), and it was originally written for the N64.

But did it really screw them though? I hear people talk about the N64 now a days more than the PS1. While the PS1 sold better the N64 is far more memorable. It just screams 90's nostalgia.

That’s more a backfire of the biggest drawback of the n64. Using cartridges instead of CDs. That’s why square, capcom, Konami etc. switched to Playstation. It was just better in every sense. I still like the n64 more but still it would’ve been so much better for Nintendo if they had used cds
@adronator

Joy Pad True. The 64 managed to imbed itself deep into pop-culture. I really think where it suffered with the disc and third party drama, it made itself standout with the 4 controller ports honestly. When people think back, they’ll probably remember playing Mario Kart or Smash 4 player with a bunch of family/friends more then they would the PS1. Something about it just has so much personality for some reason.
@hepwo91222
@hepwo91222 4 жыл бұрын
I think it was the exodus of 3rd parties in general due to the expensive cartridge format. So Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, etc companies that once only made games on Nintendo consoles really didn't bother much with the N64.

@@michaellancaster4444 nah people talk more about PS1 than N64 especially in JRPG community man N64 has no good JRPG only games thats is good on N64 is the First Party Exclusives (WAVE RACE 64 BEST GAME) but aside from that there is nothing PS1 has way more better game library than N64

I remember being in 5th grade. I had a magazine, I believe GamePro but maybe not. It had a picture of the "ultra 64". With the full rainbow of those weird controllers lined up underneath it. I remember thinking and at that point it may have been the coolest thing I had ever seen in my entire life. A year or so later I got a different magazine... It had boobs in it... The N64 was still very cool just not boobs cool.

The Nintendo 64 will always have a special place in my heart. While I won't deny that the Playstation definitely had superior hardware, I still think the Nintendo 64 was able to measure up to it in terms of its game library. I remember seeing so many awesome Nintendo 64 commercials back in the day. The Smash Bros and Banjo-Tooie commercials are still two of my favorites to this day. And "Get N or Get Out" slogan was badass. The PS1 and N64 are both equally amazing to me

I actually rented a Japanese N64 a local store had before the North American one came out. They would rent it out with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. My friend came over when I brought it home, and when we first popped in Mario, our first reaction to the whole "It's a me, Mario!" line was practically "Holy. Shit." Then we went around the castle for what seemed like hours just screwing around because it just looked so badass. Damn I miss those days...

Shout to the parents who made our childhood great!!! When he mentioned how his mom sporadically bought him a N64, that brought back memories of when my sisters, mother and father bought me games or a computer as a surprise on a special occasion growing up. One thing as a kid/teenager that made me mad as hell was when my father would make me bust my butt doing extra chores or tasks around and outside the house to get a game or console I wanted. I would have to clean and wash all his cars and my mothers too by hand, clean the front and backyard, his room, other rooms in the house, wash clothes for the house, oh and study for hours. I remember busting my butt in the Summer of 98 during a heat wave to get my special edition N64 console which came with a extra special edition controller. I was so excited to get it, but do to the heat wave, I couldn't play it for about a week and a few days. I will say this, by my parents making me work for most of the things I asked for as a child, I learned at a young age that if I want something in life I have to work hard to get it. You also have more respect for your stuff that you worked hard for, plus that feeling you get. I still have my consoles, Pc's and games from my childhood along with the ones I purchased as an adult. I can truly say I put in the work to get each an every one of them, I'm truly grateful to my parents for teaching me about workmenship.

14:13 Actually, according to Wikipedia, the Dual Analog (the predecessor to the DualShock, and had rumble in the Japanese version) and the N64 Rumble Pak came out around the same time in Japan, in April 1997. Not sure which one exactly came out first, since the N64 Rumble Pak doesn’t have an exact release date, but it’s worth pointing that out. Sony were also the first ones to have rumble built into their controllers too (and the first to have a second analog stick), which became standard after the Dreamcast died. They were also the first to have buttons inside the sticks themselves with the DualShock, so Sony did innovate more than you might’ve thought with the PS1.

Only one thing makes Nintendo compete today with playstation and xbox1...nostalgia! The people who were loyal to Nintendo for the gameboy, nes, snes, n64, gamecube, will always love Nintendo! We love Zelda, Mario, Metroid!

@andyouf
@andyouf 8 жыл бұрын
john tucker of course not, i grew up with nes and there is a sense of nostalgia there with certain games that nothing now will replace. But kids now still love mario (which is good 8 yr olds should be playing nintendo) and nintendo competes also because that is a niche that the others haven't covered. My loyalty dropped off at gamecube, lol, there's only certain amount of time I have for games and can't have a bunch of platforms. However if I had a kid (or more time) I would be happy to have a Wii U in the house. I was just discussing this nostalgia as it relates to Star Wars. A friend and I were agreeing that no matter how "great" the next one is we'll still be disappointed, because it won't live up to 3, 4, and 5. Why, because we're adults now and the originals were childhood magic and nothing trumps childhood magic.

I can name a few that have aged well today just from my collection alone and I'll even leave out the 1st party stuff as well as Rareware games (the latter because they got better versions on XBLA). There's... Body Harvest, Hybrid Heaven, all four AKI/THQ wrestling games, Fighter Destiny 2, Bomberman 64 and Harvest Moon 64. Almost half of those games I hadn't even played until recently, so I can confirm there was no nostalgia required to enjoy 'em and, if you need proof that nostalgia didn't play any part in making this list, I used to absolutely love the 1st gen Pokemon games... I can't stand their guts now.

AlexanderTheNotSoGreat I guess. I didn't name it for a few reasons. 1. It's a 1st party game 2. I don't own it 3. Outside of Pokemon, I don't like turn-based combat systems so the game never really had a chance with me

4th Generation, yes please. I'm mainly curious about your experience since I've figured that I must be close to 10 years older than you and learning about your POV of those systems would be interesting. Also, regarding the N64 controllers, they were designed that way because Nintendo thought that 3D would be a fad and that having a nice big d-pad where people are use to having one would allow them to jump back easily with 2D games if their predictions would have come true.

Thanks @AdamKoralik another great video and an awesome series overall, your my go-to guy for learning about video game history. Our history with games is very similar even though I think I'm a couple years younger than you. I first had a snes, asked my parents for a genesis but they got me a ps1 then a 64 and even though I loved the 64, games like tekken 3 crash bandicoot 3 and Twisted Metal 2 (my all time best 90's game) turned me more of a fan of sony. Lol it's cool to hear people with similar fanboy stories. That would be cool if you did the fourth gen as I've recently started to appreciate it more but if anything you definitely should do a series based off of the handheld generations which I was very much into in the 90's and 00's. I like the way you set up your videos without super cheesy intros or overly sarcastic tone it keeps it informative and still funny at times, keep up the good work!!!

***** Well it's the one system I use emulators for. I cannot stand the N64 controller, especially since my hand are so big now. Especially since the Saturn had the same amount of buttons, but in a more ergonomic layout. So do not worry, I've played them and enjoyed them, but I still do not like the controller, and remains my least favorite controller of all time.

Paul Oniel I do not regret it, I loved my PSone and still do. As for the N64, the few games that fascinate me are Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, other than that, nothing really wows me on N64. And on a side note: I recently got into the Saturn, and wow, even that machine has a shit-ton of exclusive titles that blow away the Nintendo 64 in my honest opinion. =P

eric gaza I can't say its my fav but its my 3rd fave. To each his own and I have been playing since NES. I loved N64 but PS2 was my favorite followed by the Gamecube and then the N64. 6th gen was my favorite gen overall because I liked all 3 of the systems. N64 had the best titles of it's day imho and I have a special place for it in my heart and still own mine. It turned me into a hardcore gamer.
@adamellis8829
@adamellis8829 9 жыл бұрын
eric gaza for me, the PS1 vs N64 debate essentially boils down to the game lineups, specifically the fact the N64 lineup is very limiting, while the PS1 lineup was substantially more diverse. See, my 4 favorite genres are RPGs, Shmups, Survival Horrors, and 2D side-scrollers, and the N64 was literally a barren wasteland for those genres, so the PlayStation was a easy pick. Heck, I'd take the Saturn over the N64, given that it actually had some games in the genres I play.
@DjGaza18

Adam Ellis they both had games you wanted to play regardless of which system you owned, yes Nintendo 64 was my favorite, but my cousins owned the ps1, so when I would visit, we would play games like, spyro, tekken, metal gear, crash bash was favorite, and ctr was awesome to, I even remember they had a fighter game for Jurassic park we enjoyed, and nowadays I would have to say my favorite type of games is open world/Sandbox, I'm one of those small percentage of people who don't enjoy RPG's.

ADAM! so I usually let my you tube subscriptions pile up while i do something else and yesterday was the day i chose to catch up on some of them! Your Generation Recaps have always been something i love and i got to say i love this one very much you seemed to go into a lot more detail and i love how you put your childhood experience in here I literally was able to put myself in your shoes! the main thing i got to say is watching all of it back to back .... that intro bro! it was killing me same intro for all system lol not good watching it on a playlist lol in any case Magnificent job and if you make recaps all the way to the 1st you know ill watch it! keep up the good work sir!

xboxmodder02 That's a very small part of the reason. Mostly it was to make a more cost effective console, to make a medium they knew kids would be able to use, and of course their recent dreaded dealings with Sony and Philips.

Adam, I love your videos and relate to them because I grew up with the same consoles. The only thing that is just unbelievable to me is that you were not aware of the Saturn in the mid 1990s?! You have said that you were a Sega fan, you might have picked Saturn for the 5th gen, had you known it existed. True, not very many people had it, but it was in all the video game mags at that time and was demoed at Target, Toys 'R' Us, KB Toys, etc. The 4th gen would be great, you must do it; please include Turbo Graphix. Last question, I bought the expanded battery for the WiiU that you did a video on. I was curious how you felt about it and thought you may do a follow-up vid about it. Thanks

For a lot of people...yeah, I can't disagree haha. There are genuinely some people who go back to it though :) I went back to it about 2 years ago and it's...well, let's just say the nostalgia is probably more enjoyable than the experience itself. We've kind of been spoiled with FPS games - Goldeneye was a great game at the time but there are some inherent flaws in it. Not because they fucked up; just because it was early days. It was a natural step in the progression (and subsequent regression) of the first person shooter.

But the N64 is still more powerful than the PS1 even with cartridges. That's like saying the GameCube is weaker than the PS2, because of there 1.5 GB discs.Again, the power was there, it just couldn't be used to it's fullest potential.
@AdamKoralik
@AdamKoralik 9 жыл бұрын
Being unable to use that power makes it ultimately irrelevant. It's like saying, what's better? A Ferrari with no wheels or a beat up Geo that actually works? Which one would you get in to if you needed to get somewhere? Point is, the N64's use of cartridges held it back and allowed the PS1 and Saturn to have various advantages when they shouldn't have done that.

AdamKoralik Okay, I understand, but the N64 still had some good looking games. Conker's Bad Fur Day looks really great, I can't think of a 3D PS1 game off the top of my head that looks better siIvermate 1.5 GB and does 0.1 GB make a difference? The point is it's small.
@Vampire__Squid
@Vampire__Squid 9 жыл бұрын
Dipper723 I just don't get where people come up with 1.5 GBs, because mini-DVDs only come in 1.4 GBs
@AdamKoralik
@AdamKoralik 9 жыл бұрын
Dipper723 Have you ever held a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day in one hand and then another N64 game in the other? It's a heavy cartridge. It's kind of like the Resident Evil 2 cartridge. Was insanely expensive to produce and houses more memory than most games do. As a result, they were able to get more out of it. As a result, the game really didn't make any money, if anything it probably lost a lot. I know that doesn't really answer your question, as I don't have an answer off the top of my head to be honest, but it's interesting none the less.
