I think this is the craziest idea yet... writing a semi decent marimba solo in one hour is sooooo hard! But I gave it a try and definitely found that when the pressure gets to you... it really gets to you hahahaha. Anyway, if you want to suggest any more challenges for me to try (I think I'm better at speed learning lol) follow me @thestudiofamily and send me a message!

Yes we're back with another challenge... this time it's the #SpeedComposingChallenge! Thanks to everyone who gave me this idea on @thestudiofamily! So now I'm curious - have you ever tried to write music in an hour? Let me know down below! #TheStudioFamily

Adam Tan, I've tried writing music, but it never turned out well. On the other hand, will you ever release the sheets for this piece? I love the way it sounds and would love to play it!

Adam Tan It’s great to see you struggle like this. ESPECIALLY in the same areas that stump professionals. Your definitely on a solid path towards something. If take a class or two I think it’ll expand you compositional prowess.

This is very cool to me! I’ve always struggled to write music because the ideas I have in my head never come through when I try writing it. Especially the bass notes, I always struggle making them compliment the top part. I’m going to try to borrow my school’s 5 octave over summer and write a solo though!

You’re nuts... that was awesome and I’m sending it to my brother! I definitely improv a lot and make stuff up when people are watching but I’ve never tried to write anything in such short time... do you think you might write and publish a piece with a similar melody? Also have you ever tried to write different types of music? By types I mean like how you know a piece is by Ivan Treviño without looking up the author, I feel like I’d know a piece is by Adam tan when I hear it (in a good way, like I dig ur music, I’m not trying to say it’s all the same but that there is a common style which I think is important)

So when you composed your original solos, did you have a theme in your head initially before you started plotting everything down, or did you just pull up to your marimba and played something that sounded good and went from there?
@AdamTanPercussion
@AdamTanPercussion 5 жыл бұрын
Some of them I had a theme in my head (Path, Moon) and some I played a melody I liked on the marimba like in this video (Meet Again, Lotus) and then I went from there :)

Marimbalogy Thank you Charlie! I don’t think I have 100% perfect, but when I was younger I kind of worked out a relative pitch alternative myself that’s been pretty close!

@Reid Metoyer I've done something similar. My method was to get familiar with each of the 12 pitches in a way that sticks out (much like how string players know the sound of an A, their tuning pitch, as do wind and brass players with their Bb, and many fans of My Chemical Romance can recognize a G4 with ease [Black Parade]). It's all about the repetition. I hope this is somewhat helpful :)

Hey, I've been wanting to save up for a marimba because I want to have a 5 octave that I can play at home, I've been looking around for a while and even considered trying to build my own. My budget is also fairly small so that's not very helpful.

Do you have a passion for pentatonic scale pieces? I feel like a lot of your compositions use those elements. If so, is that because the notes in those scales go well together? Ps: jealous you can play moon that fast :P

For those watching this now that can play by ear. Do you ever have something in your head then you have to figure it out, like you feel forced to. That happens to me so much. Ill be playing an etude and it will just have a single D with a F# and Ill be like shit! That sounds like the Wii theme! Then completely discard my etude and figure most of it out.
