Hello from California. I must have been living under a rock because I just discovered you! I was just at my derm last week. I’m 65 let me say and skin obsessed. I have never adapted to RetinA.....no matter how many times I’ve tried.....my skin simply hurts. It’s very sensitive. So, he says....get Adapalene....you will find it less irritating. I don’t have acne but want the anti aging benefits. I ran to the drug store to buy it. I’m just at 4x a week because I still have irritation. Ugggg. I will keep plugging along here but this video was so helpful! And timely. Wish me luck!💚

This is the most informative compact explanation ever - thank you for that. I have mild rosacea, sensitive, but quite oily skin, so sometimes get confused on what to use. I know the Retinol is probably not the ideal on rosacea skin, but found a retinyl palmitate in the list of my moisturiser, so kind of freaked a bit as it is a new product im trying and was scared for it to irritate my skin (my fav was discontinued, sadly)

Hi Dr. Anne, i have subscribed to your channel. I find you give very good information. I am trying to add a retinol/ retinoid to my skincare routine. I don’t know what to start with. A small dose of retinol by the Ordinary because i just started using their products 3 months ago. Could you help me with what I should start with. I don’t have real sensitive skin. Thank you for all your great videos!! 😊
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
The Ordinary have a wide variety of products with retinol, but I haven’t tried any of them, so I can’t give you a personal recommendation. I do like the one by The Inkey List (I have a review on my channel) that comes at a similar price point and can be introduced slowly for beginners. But in general any retinol you can get without prescription, introduced slowly (I have a video on that) should work, so pick one that you like the texture and that is affordable for beginnings.

Hi doctor Anne , can adapalene 0.1% fade away post inflammatory hyperpigmentation? I am Indian with medium brown skin ,
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
Every Retinoid will reduce hyperpigmentation, so yes, Adapalene can help fade PIH. If it is your only concern though, or the hyperpigmentation is very stubborn, something like Hydroquinone might be more effective. You might need a prescription for that though, at least here in the EU you would.

Doctor Anne hi doctor Anne , I am Indian with medium Brown skin and am more prone to POst inflammatory hyperpigmentation and I Don’t want to use hydroquinone, I have years of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, if using lightening creams other then hydroquinone then aren’t you more prone to developing more hyperpigmentation spots if you are exposed to sun even with a high spf. Sun cream ? I don’t want to use hydroquinone and I am scared to use any lightening creams incase more hyperpigmentation spots develop , and is it true the stronger the retinoids you use the more irritation and the worsening of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation will happen ? Can adapalene completely get rid of PIH ? I appreciate your help doc
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
It is important to understand that any advice I can give here is general advice. For individual problems, especially if they are severe, it is necessary to see someone in person, so my advice for you would be to go and talk to a dermatologist face to face. In general, the stronger the retinoid, the higher the risk for irritation. That doesn’t equal a higher risk for PIH per se, but yes, all retinoids as well as all acids increase sun sensitivity. A sunblock with frequent reapplying and sensible sun behavior like wearing hats, seeking shade and staying out of the sun as much as possible should take care of that. For fading hyperpigmentation Hydroquinone is the ingredient with the most data on efficiency, but I understand that you don’t want to use it. Other ways to tackle hyperpigmentation is through laser treatment done by a dermatologist. Everything else, retinoids, acids etc. will help to some degree, but are not as effective. For you individually, see a dermatologist face to face and talk to them about your worries and your skin and then follow their recommendations. I am sorry if that is not the answer you are looking for, but it is all that I can safely provide on here.

Dr Anne, so retinal seems like the most potent from the over the counter retinoids, but you were saying that there is lots of data only on tretinoin and retinol which i guess suggests that it is a better chance to get results with retinol which has been proven to work than with retinal which is stronger (less conversion is needed) but NOT proven to work?

Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide are very effective in fighting acne, but they are certainly drying. My advice would be to go very gentle with everything else and focus on hydration (I have a video on how to use Tretinoin with minimal irritation that you might want to watch). The mixture is safe to use as long as you need it, you should talk to your gp or dermatologist if you want to stop using it, as the acne could come back if you do.

I have a lot of food sensitivities and i got confused as i didnt know if i was experiencing reactions to food or if i really just had breakouts and a damaged barrier...But if i steer clear of the main offenders my skin is fine,so it seems to be internal...When I eat any offending foods my skin can fluctuate between burning,hives,little shiny blisters like pimples all over my jaw, chin and around my mouth or just plain itching,depending on what food I eat....I'm seeing a dietitian and am getting to the bottom of it....But yes anyway renee rouleau suggests this routine for people without sensitive skin,for people with sensitive skin she suggests retinol...I find retin a actually calms my skin and reduces my redness when I'm using it consistently, only I was of the opinion that "I MUST" use it every day,and after 6 years of trying this i found i was experiencing too much dryness,my skin felt parched...So I did a bit of digging,and this makes sense for me at the moment,I may have to tweak it in the future...Retin a × 2 days,then exfoliate whatever dry skin there is from the retin a,then repeat,then give your skin a break from both....and if you only wanted to exfoliate once or not at all,then I guess you would just try 4 days on retin a,then 3 days of repairing serums ect....I will definitely update you Dr anne,I'll give it a month and then let you know..

Do you think it’s okay to do that ? Or is not necessary to exfoliate while using differin ? I only use cleanser, niacinamide serum and spf with moisturizer and in the night cleanser, differin

Once I apply the lotion the skin started getting a reaction and a bit tingling. On the next day the same thing. I understand that this shouldn't be the niacinamide, but I can't figure what. I know that salicylic acid can't be combined but they say it's fine on the next day.. also the third day my forehead developed small bumps all over. What would cause more side effects... Differin or a retinol? I am 33 and still deal with cystic acne. I know it is hormonal (and genetic) but I want to fight it from all directions. I have Differin at home but am afraid to use it. Also think it might be a waste to start it now and get used to it and then have to quit when I want to try for a baby. So I am thinking of waiting until after pregnancies, but maybe I can start a mild option now? So my concern is both acne and aging...
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
You should speak to your doctor about it, ut in general: If you have cystic acne, there is a risk of scarring, so if you aren´t already trying for a baby, I don´t see a point in waiting. In regrads of irritation, Differin has higher irritation potential than Retinol, but less than Tretinoin. But retinol will most likely not do much for cystic acne. There really isn´t anything to be afraid of, I have a video about how to introduce Tretinoin with minimal side effects if you need some tips.
