Tiny Sci-Fi Cities | Circuit Board Macro Photography Tutorial

In this macro photography tutorial, we will be using scrap circuit boards and electronics to create interesting sci-fi cityscapes and aerial shots.
Computer components like motherboards and graphics cards are pretty common and make for amazing macro photography subjects that are fun to explore with your macro lens. Adding some coloured light can make the skylines of components and solder look like the sun setting on a futuristic city, with a little imagination.

Hi Ben! Another really interesting video, thanks. You don't even have to use your imagination much to see that these circuit boards really do look like cityscapes! I personally prefer the Aerial shots.

Cheers Ashley, I think I like the aerial ones better too, but the ones from the side look a bit more like tilt-shift city shots I think.

They are old PC parts. Motherboard and graphics cards.

Yeah, the tripod is always kept handy, though I like to go freehand occasionally to keep things interesting. Did you get some good results?

hi Ben, this was really interesting and looks like it could be fun to try. You have a 'Blade Runner' Landscape, you now just need to capture the flying vehicles and aliens in the images.

Just found your channel and subscribed. I've been looking for macro ideas and yours are great. The lighting rig you use is superb but too pricey for me and I was wondering if you can suggest any alternatives for a novice photographer on a strict budget. Many thanks

Welcome to the channel Dave! There's lots of ways to get similar effects, though obviously there is always expense in either time & effort or the cost of new equipment. Probably the most obvious and cheapest way to light your images would be natural light, otherwise, flashlights and lamps from around your home will get you started.

Hey Michael, There were all sorts, depending on the lighting. The thumbnail image was shot at ISO 500, f8 and 1/80th, whereas the side on shot with the sunset was 1/250th.

Hi Ben I think this is a very nice looking product I was planning to visit the show in Birmingham I have show tickets and booked my flight from Ireland but I think its safer to not travel at the moment I was hoping to pick up a Ultimate Set with extras would it be possible to ask if I could get the show discount regards jonathan
