Good question. That is the cancel button. Thanks for pointing out that I missed it. If you push that button while the cruise control is on and set for a specific speed. It will cancel the cruise, the car will just coast. But the car will remember the last set speed. If you push the resume button the car will accelerate to the previously set speed.

This is a great question. The quick answer is the brake lights do come on when the car applies the brakes. I am not an expert in these matters. In this video or explanation I am not recommending that you can take your eyes off the road at any time. These systems are not intended to drive the car. So you must remain alert and in control of your vehicle at all times. I did some research and will do my best to answer this in detail. It may seem like this is new technology. It is true that, Volkswagen is always updating their safety technology and using the latest state of the art systems. Pre- Collision systems have been around for some time. In 2003 Pre-collision systems began to appear on the market. They were rare and only on the most expensive cars. These first systems were not as sophisticated as today's systems. They used lasers and infrared to detect objects in front of the car. By about 2011 you would see them more regularly in Luxury cars like Audi, Lexus, and some limited Volkswagens, and Toyotas. Even in these early systems the brake lights came on when the car applied the brakes. So where as in 2011 you may have only seen systems like this on a Volkswagen Phaeton, and Touareg and even then it was rare and only on top models. Then it only had the ability to see cars and these early systems were not as fast. For example if you are going 70 and following at 2 car links. ( I would not recommend this) If the car in front of you applied its brakes and slowed to 51, that being about a 19mph difference, the Pre-Collision system may have prevented an accident. I do want to take a moment to differentiate between two features here. Adaptive Cruise, and Pre-collision. They both use the same sensors. If you have the Adaptive Cruise set it will keep you at a safe distance. As shown in the video. Pre-collision systems work even if the cruise is not on. They work if the driver gets distracted and the car in front of you hits the breaks. The Pre-collision system will first warn the driver if it thinks a crash is going to occur. If the driver does not react it will apply the brakes and set seatbelt pretensioners. Nowadays systems are on many more cars. Like in this video you see it on this, Taos. You can get it on many other Volkswagens also. Pre-collision systems now use multiple cameras, and radar systems. Not only can they recognise cars but can sometimes detect pedestrians. They can also usually prevent a crash at a 30mph difference in speed. If you are following at a safe distance, the driver takes over, and further applies the brakes and steers the car. They usually can prevent an accident all together.

@@DetailingSolutions that’s what it’s really intended for. yes, you can kind of use it around town, but I wouldn’t rely on adaptive cruise control in stop&go traffic.
