Here’s something you all should hear. Three years ago I had viral meningitis that left me severely neurologically damaged and bedridden for two years. I slept around the clock for the first year, as is common with brain injured persons. Long story short, I wasn’t improving. I learned that the keto diet is being used for some brain injured soldiers and I knew that it had long been used for children with severe epilepsy. I had lost my will to go on in such a reduced state of being. And i was a burden to my family. In desperation, last November I started the keto diet. I started getting better at around the two week mark. I’ve been getting better ever since. I’ll never be the same as i was before my illness. But I now have a quality of life that is acceptable. I’ll never go back to eating carbohydrates.

Gary Simone I don’t really know. I literally slept around the clock for two years. I was very messed up. I couldn’t walk or talk or read or write or swallow. I had hyperacusis, nystagmus, a severe vestibular disorder, c-diff, photo toxic rash, post herpetic neuralgia, and on and on. The reason I can’t comment on my mental state was that I had severe memory difficulties, lost executive functioning, and existed in utter confusion for two years. I couldn’t remember how to make coffee, so I poured boiling water over my hand, that kind of thing. I couldn’t remember how to make coffee every day for a year. I couldn’t learn or remember. When I started to get better, I was angry, and frustrated to the point of tears. Today, I’m sad because of all the ability I’ve lost. But it wouldn’t call it depression.

I am a 78 year old man and have been on the Atkins diet for 25 years. I have lost a total of 100 pounds without really trying! Thanks to Covid-19 my wife and I didn't go out much. We stayed home and watched television and used the computer. A lot! We got a lot of rest including cat naps since there was nothing better to do. We are going out bicycling today and I was concerned that I might have trouble fitting into my clothing due to not exercising over the winter. That was a joke! Everything was too large except me. Shows you how we think. No exercise all winter - a lot of rest - would have to mean weight gain. I lost 20 pounds! I was right about one thing though. Nothing fit. Everything was a little too large. At 78 I am now the same weight as when I was 18 years old. It was a fantastic feeling. For the last 25 years I have never been starving. When I was slightly hungry I ate. Something I was never able to do with a clear conscience before Atkins. With all the low carb cooking videos there is no reason for getting tired of eating the same foods. All the best Dr. Westman you are doing a great job!

I am the 78 year old man below just adding more information. Casseroles are a great way to keep food ready to heat up on a moments notice. Pizza casseroles and meatball casseroles are some of my favorites. I no longer need to have a crust on my pizza. Saves time, money and carbs by eating pizza in the form of a casserole. I know that most people prefer having a crust on their pizza. Learn to live without it and it will save you a lot of carbs over the years. I was a die hard crust lover who has learned to live without the crust for the last 25 years. There are many ways to prepare foods. Learn the best way to use fewer carbs. There are videos showing you how to prepare anything low carb. Become an expert by watching and listening to experts.

I do those type of casseroles without any crusts ... Pizza Casserole, Tuna Salmon Cheese Casserole, Taco Casserole, etc. I also do what I call 'Fixins in a Bowl' which is just the same as the casseroles but in a bowl. I have pork rinds if desired, too. Then I freeze portions in individual containers and thaw as needed!

Fiber is actually unnecessary, at least for some people like myself. I used to have constipation for many years on a moderate to high fibre diet but since going very low carb and low fibre, I've been just fine. I think excess fibre can just make things worse for people because it adds bulk to your stool, making it harder to pass.

I've been doing keto For 3 years. I was never really overweight but was considered insulin resident. My cholesterol was 258 my tryglyerides were high etc.. I read labels I don't eat bread, rice, oatmeal, proceeded food etc... I've simplified my food's so much. And have no real appetite. BUT I just had labs done yesterday May 25 2021. My kidneys are functioning low just under the lowest number on the chart? My insulin was 7 which baffles me...I count sugar and eat less than 25 a day max. I try to eat things with zero or 1 gram. But max 6. I eat 25 carbs or less. My only fruit is fresh blueberries everyone needs a treat and this is my sweet treat that's how low I've trained my taste to go on sugar. I drink water or LaCroix water no alcohol or pop. I still could lose 15 lbs. I don't eat cereal. I eat 1000 cal or less. I don't know what else to do. Why my cholesterol won't come down. Why my kidneys are low? And no I don't use Morton table salt. I use hymalian sea salt but rarely salt anything. I can't get any answers from my doctor other than let's watch it or it could be herarity. I also intermittent fast.

I have a question. I’m keeping my carbs below 20grms. However I’m finding it super difficult to get enough fat...I’m filled to the gills on one meal a day 20:4 or 24 hour fasts a few days a week. I can’t eat that much protein ( ie bacon etc). I use butter, coconut oil as much as I can, but damn I get full. Example: late breakfast, had two eggs, 3 slices of bacon, Lunch: 5 ounces of ground beef with organic pasta sauce over zucchini noodles. 🤢 full. Is it a worry to not get the fat? Believe me I have plenty of body fat to burn! So, maybe I shouldn’t worry since I have the body fat to burn?

I definitely understand what you are stating and I have followed this paradigm myself always staying as low as I can on carbs in general. However, I am still wondering if you & many others are missing the real central point! That point I’m trying to make is that the real direct culprit to eventual cardiac problems is really “oxidative stress “! Oxidative stress we know will damage the LDL particles which I believe makes them very “sticky” and smaller. This allows these particles to the epethealial lining of the arteries and create a plaque and certain white blood cells go after that site due to some immunilogicsl reaction and as a result it builds up with white blood cells, cholesterol, calcium ions proteins i guess too snd keeps building as long as there is “oxidation” or oxidative stress going on! So can you tell me if the glucose or fructose themselves have high enough oxidation potentials to invoke electron transfer reactions causing more radicals to also form is by definition a single electron in an orbital. And this single electron really wants to pair with another electron to make it more stable in terms of spin multiplicity. Or after the sugars get converted to fat with have many keto groups, is it this that is the culprit for the oxidative stress effects that go on? But I would like to ask, am I correct by stating that its “oxidative stress “ that is what everyone needs to avoid. And are there tables that I can look up that promotes “oxidative stress” even indirectly???

Hi The one event that would really put Keto into the mainstream is Keto items on menus of major restaurants. This would do more for low carb than all else. If Panera offered a low carb bread or dominos offered a keto pizza it improve the acceptability so much. And it’s seems to me they would be an incentive as they viable from a marketing standpoint.

Rather than restaurants offering keto knock-offs of high-carb foods, I'd hope to see a new restaurant chain, call it 'Keto', that simply offers real, whole, keto foods - meats, greens, cheeses, butter, etc., with zero seed/veg oils, zero grains, zero sugars, zero processed crap. It'd be great to be able to eat-out again, and feel good about it and enjoy it... I don't know if such a business model would be viable today, but I know I'd patronize such a place.

Yes I agree that’s better food. But the impact to change of our standard diet will come from a bigger awareness and acceptance. And I think having Keto menu choices and chain restaurants would accomplish this more than anything else even if it’s “knock off”. It will make more aware of why we even consider low carb important.

agree that carbs are not essential nutrients because humans can make carbs / glucose as needed. We have a system for gluconeogenesis which uses amino acids and glycerol for glucose synthesis as required - but the mechanism is inefficient one . The daily capacity of human being for gluconeogenesis is estimated to be about 2.8 gm / kg body weight / day . About 200 gm / day for an adult weighing 70 kg. But if we consume carbs ( only sufficient enough) then requirement for protein will go down. Body will use ingested carbs for obligatory requirement. In this case proteins would be preferably used for other body functions. Would it be advisable to to eat carbs up to 120 to 200 gm / day so as to spare proteins for other body functions ? - protein sparing effect of carbs. Obviously the carbs should be unprocessed and no sugar !!! Any scientific argument would be appreciated -

If it was during the Passover, it was a special wheat---if you see Kosher for Passover on items such as Matzo, it is unbleached and unbromated wheat flour with water added---Though oftentimes depicted as a roll or a small french bread loaf in paintings, Jesus would indeed have been eating unleavened bread for the Passover...i.e. matzo.

24carrot gold it was Einkorn type wheat, and stone ground. The grinding process did not result in an extremely refined white powder that modern steel rollers produce, so more nutrients and a little less carbs that take longer to be digested. Also, the bread was raised using the sourdough technique, which uses bacteria, rather than yeast. The bacteria digest a certain amount of the carbs. So the bread had a little less carbs and a little more nutrients than modern bread. But not a huge difference. The thing to note, however, is that up until the industrial revolution, total carbs in a meal were far less that today, especially with zero refined sugar. Around Europe, staples were meat and cabbage. Bread with carbs was eaten with it, but meat has no carbs and cabbage very little. It's the total environment that counts, not just one food item.

Where would I get my minimum requirements of Vitamins and minerals from fat? I am most confused about what my body needs to properly function and Keto does not ring well.The body requires food to survive and transform everything into anything, sugar into fat, fat into sugar as needed.But IMO if you exercise and work with a diet of 1700or 1800 calories/day anybody will loose weight and detox quit rapidly. French food relies mostly on carbs and meat and yet before the fast food invasion was renown for being "skinny". South East Asia is also "skinny" and eat all sort of carbs.After watching dozen and dozen of videos and interviews I still do not hear the scientist talking about menus...they all speak about how good it is and what you should not have.Why isn't this diet available in schools?Doctor Atkins died and weighted over 400 lbs.I am afraid that like building muscles when you stop it all comes back as fat...
@AdaptYourLife
@AdaptYourLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi One Amongall, there are three macronutrients, Carbohydrates, Protein and fat. Only two are essential, protein and fat. You body cannot make either of these macronutrients on its own. Carbohydrates are not essential and our bodies can make glucose without it through a process called gluconeogenesis. A well formulated Keto diet will not require any Vitimin supplementation. Yes, most calorie restricted diets will result in weight loss but a Keto diet does so without the hunger. This is fundamentally different to any other diet. The science behind a Keto diet is robust and when comparing a low fat to a low carb diet side by side, the low carb diet beats the low fat diet by around 30 to 1. Dr Atkins was not 400 pounds when he died and he died from falling on ice and hitting his head. I hope this helps 😊

In terms of the argument for being a sugar burner using a low fat nutritional approach vs a fat burner using a low carb approach: I’m a sports massage therapist not a physiologist but it seems to me that if the body stores the vast majority of its excess energy as fat then shouldn’t that be a big indicator that biologically we were designed to eat very little carbs and focus on eating/burning fat? It seems like if we were really meant to be sugar burners God would have designed us to store excess energy as glucose/glycogen primarily.
@AdaptYourLife

Amy L we were in fact designed to eat very little carbs, thousands of years ago, fruit would be seasonal, fruit didn’t contain the high amounts of sugar they now contain and people would have to rely on their own fat stores to get them through times of food scarcity.
