Van Deursen (www.vandeursen.be/), a car electronic shop in Belgium (not the Netherlands as I incorrectly said in the video @ 2:00) offers a plug-and-play kit to allow you to add Apple Carplay/Android Auto functionality to the Audi factory radio units that ran the RNS-E firmware (such as the radio units in the Gen 1 R8).
Here is how you do it for the Gen 1 Audi R8.
For specific coding instructions, I've written a DIY post that goes into detail on how to code the radio unit for the Gen 1 Audi R8.

Further corrections I got from Van Deursen:
For cars with AUX, their kit still gives you the ability to use AUX in addition to Apple Carplay/Android Auto.
Adding touchscreen support will permanently change the screen, preventing your radio unit from reverting back to stock, which they do not support.
