In filmmaking the saying goes, the person who makes the final decision on how your movie will look is the projectionist. On the Internet, apparently it's KZfaq. And they apparently delayed the audio an extra frame.
And because of that I felt compelled to revisit this topic and address some points brought up in the comments from the previous "Just One Thing" video:

Nice, I see you addressed most of the stuff, and added references. There's still one thing left though, but that's mainly for the viewers here: the unknown of how the media is replayed. Having been a programmer in the audio domain, I know that syncing visuals to audio is a pretty hard task. Basically, you deliver chunks of audio to the soundcard, in pro/critical apps they're generally buffers of a few ms, but for mainstream apps, like a browser (games are another story), you're buffering like 50 to hundreds of ms to be safe. And when you send this buffer to the soundcard, you don't know when it's gonna be output (the drivers aren't just delivering the app's sound, they're mixing audio from all apps, and that adds to the latency). The app has to rely on the driver to reliably tell its true delay, when it even does. Add to that, programmers often don't even care as it's not necessarily very noticable (until it adds up). And add to the problem that decoding/delivering frames is too a hard task. Even Windows, since Vista, is compositing what's on screen a bit like a videogame, introducing its own small image latency. So in the equation you have programmers, drivers, different APIs, different OSes, different browsers, different viewing devices (monitors vs TVs), & the problem of bluetooth headphones [to Jeremy Cooper below, yes your bluetooth headphones introduce their own latency] - the viewing experience has to be very different for everyone here. Classic gamers already know what to expect from today's emulators, OSes & TVs when it comes to reaction time, the problem is normally worse for audio.

And that's just the PC side. Now watch this video on a set-top box (Apple TV or Amazon Fire or ...). The audio goes to the 7.1 digital amplifier, which sends it to the speakers with very little delay. The video gets send to the TV, which does its picture processing, frame interpolation and and and, so it gets delayed by 120ms before it is shown.
@antontserepanov9720

I like your brief insight to the audio domain. Do you think there is a solution for this problem? Also, recently I was listening to the podcast about the switch from analogue to digital sound production, and latency was the main problem in this switch. I believe the author said about live broadcasting that: "we are living the same moment but at different times"
@anothergol
@anothergol 3 жыл бұрын
@@antontserepanov9720 Yes there are solutions, as when it's bad it's often due to sloppy programming. But it can't be perfect, say you're playing a videogame through wireless headphones, you wouldn't want the image delayed to match the headphones, it'd make the game even worse. Delaying is only ok for non-interactive stuff. I don't think there's any good reason to go back to analogue for sound production. Digital effects with big latencies exist, but they're rare enough (& don't have any analogue counterpart anyway), otherwise a good pro setup these day, with audio through ASIO drivers, can easily reach

This is such an important video for me because it proves why i always felt so confused flying my FPV drone doing freestyle. At the beginning i used also audio data together with the analog video for a good performance but had a lot of troubles with my senses being desyncronized. Even tough the analog video latency was more or less constant i had an overlay of the audio i was listening through the earplugs and the audio being transmitted trough the air from the loud motors. And when you were too far away it got weirder and weirder till losing control. A good friend of me gave me the tip to completely get rid of audio and fly even at further distances just with the analog feed, since them everything works better! Thank you for this amazing post!

I think that this is exactly what I was talking about in the comment of the previous video. It doesn't necessarily have to do with one or two frames or something having to be spot on. But filmmaking is more about the feeling and so it's more important how the shot, the cut, the lighting, the sound makes the viewer feel posing to not being technically spot on. It's more like making pizza than putting together and Ikea cupboard. Even though filmmaking is one of the few art forms where creativity is always closely bidden with technicality it's important to keep in the fore view that it's still an art and needs emotion. Once upon a time when finishing my high school for civil engendering I used to be a very technical person and wanted to be exact with all of the stuff I did. From technical drawings to a design of something. But as time went on and I learned more and more how to express myself better trough different stuff I did in my life, one of which was salsa dancing, I learned that it wasn't so important for something to be in the middle or on the beat but it was important that it felt right and this is something a person has to cultivate and it comes with time. Because eventually you begin to believe your inner sense of what it is and what it isn't. Thank you for enlightening me even further John! :)

Loved that you looked deeper into this and gave us an explanation. Wow this is very important stuff to know if you are cutting for effect for people who only use KZfaq. I still love the frame to be changed so the beat can hit that frame. It feels like you are hitting that changed frame with the beat. But when the frame changed with several beats in a roll then it feels important to keep the beat and the frame together. But I can see using the cut for the mood you are trying to portray in your project. Thanks for making me smarter ;) I need all the help I can get.

Thanks for being pretty much the only person to adress this issue of the frame delay not only on KZfaq, but also the probable delay in premiere pro! I didn't even considered the delay from exporting H.264 on premiere pro. I read the comment on this video far down below about the audio re-encoding by KZfaq itsself was the source of the issue. First I noticed delay when I was using the bluetooth headset in the beginning; never gonna edit montages with that anymore. After that I noticed the problem when I uploaded it on KZfaq and I thought I was in the wrong with the probable cause of fatigue or the mere exposure effect for losing objectivity. Now I am realizing this when editing a video with a song theme for a movie I made. I am definitely going to test out dragging the audio around 40m further when exporting when editing is done & testing it on a new channel with private video to see where the delay/imperfections are still 'too' off for the real upload. Really want to nail this right perfect, because the video editing is from the movie itsself and this footage of the movie reflects the emotional atmosphere of the movie AND the music in each specific part the whole track.

From what I've read, it's a problem with encoding h.264 in general in regards multiplexing (which is how audio and video are separately compressed and then synched together). It would take me a lot of research to understand it.

@@FilmmakerIQ Ok thank you. To be sure, I tried to replicate your test here on a 4k H264 main 5.2 59,94 FPS video montage (2 min) which was already uploaded last week. And i am surprised at the conclusion if this is correct: - i compared the video that i had to export in premiere pro 2 times instead of 1 to layer another text effect properely on it - I noticed the audio of the 2x exported video started 2 frames EARLIER (so no delay, but faster) than the audio of the original unexported video when these video's were both exactly lined up (FYI timeline is split up in frames for me, not in ms that you mentioned at the end of this video). - Then I downloaded the youtube video via a website that allowed 1080p downloads (i know somewhere in the comments you said that a random youtube downloader site wasn't totally accurate to check, but i can't remember the right youtube downloader) and this video is near identical to the original. (so it went back 2 frames at this 59,94 FPS video and another really small portion of the frame. You could almost say then that it is identical to the 1 frame of the 24/23,94 FPS you talked about). - This would mean that the youtube delay actually canceled out the early 2 frames of the export - Then I watched it on my phone for the first time on youtube (not youtube studio) from a short distance and everything felt really good how i wanted it to be. If this website downloader & test is 100% accurate, that means if I only exported it once, as usual , KZfaq would have only delayed the audio 1 frame later (because 1 frame of audio was earlier from premiere pro export, and the video from the youtube downloader site delayed the audio 2 frames) with the H264 file (converted from .webm coming from PS5). Then the conclusion would be that 1 frame for a ] 60 fps video is pretty much negligible. So weird, but if this is true, it sounds like every situation can be somewhat different.

There's this curious thing that happens when cutting precisely on the beat. I see the shot cutting and just because the effect of the sudden change in visuals, the response to the audio stimuli seems to be suppressed. In other words, cutting exactly on the beat sort of undermines the auditory impact of the beat. I don't know if it's just me, but if you experience something similar, let me know.

Great work John! I saw the video earlier and couldn't really pick what you were talking about, so I put it aside until I had a chance to look at it "properly". When the video was ahead of the audio it felt to me like the audio was being dragged into the story. I will tuck that away to use as an effect to create uncertainty. I also read in another place that was completely different to video and filmmaking that the brain doesn't assemble our perceptions in a linear manner. It kind of puts the key bits in place first and then some 50-100 ms later backfills other details. I think it was something like shapes and movement registered first, and colour was layered over the top of that later. Curiouser and curiouser,

The biggest mistake people make is comparing the human visual system to cameras. Eyes are nothing like cameras - in fact the cheapest plastic lens you can buy would outresolve the human eyeball by a huge margin. It's the brain that makes up most of what we see... And yet, when I get attacked on this subject and quite rudely, it's almost always in respect to this fundamental mistake.

Thanks for your work! Your previous video was cool in that it made people aware of the possibilities (I had a sense of it, as a musician, but never really looked into it as you did). The sad thing is that in this video, you just made us realize that we can't really trust our own eyes and ears when we edit for KZfaq, and I suspect that some degree of back and forth between export and upload check will be necessary for those who care about those things. That said, I suspect the editing pace and musical style of your backing track will have an equally significant effect. From the way your music is rhythmically written, to even the sound itself. Here your bass drum is kind of fat and hollow, and I'm pretty sure that if you had a much tighter and higher pitched kick drum like in metal music, the timing of the cut would have to be quite different (and it'll also depends on whether your drummer plays before, on, or after the beat!). In this sense, I actually liked better the higher latency caused by KZfaq in your previous video, it fitted the heaviness of the music for me.

Cut after beat looks like a some swing, when frame changes and sound follow it; it can be fine for some videos which have a goal to accent some effects as musical break / speech accents / etc. And cut in beat ... uhm, it makes me feel some anxiety while I'm watching. Thanks for the rectification John. The first version (which turned out to be two beats ahead) had me screaming at everyone "It's wrong!" I felt I was being hurried along - something which was at odds with the visual content. Of course everyone is correct that we need to treat each on a case by case basis, but one thing I haven't read here yet is that a good drummer will often play slighty ahead or behind the beat, particularly on key beats, giving the piece more urgency or a "bigger" feel. So follow the actual beat or the drum hits? More scope for experimentation :)

There is another thing to consider too. KZfaq transcodes several versions of each video quality, using different codecs and sometimes even storing the video and audio separately. The only way to guarantee consistency in the video is to upload and watch above 1080p, where youtube always uses the same codec at each quality level (VP9 video, usually opus audio synced separately). However, with the detached audio the actual a/v sync might depend on device, or some other crazy factor. KZfaq is confusing

Exactly what I've learned before - although our visual sense has more delay than audio, but since there will ALWAYS be more delay in visual than sound in real world (light travels faster than sound), so we sort of "get used to that". That's the reason why when in doubt, I always let the audio delay but NEVER audio advance wheb doing lip-sync edit. I bet that you can throw in, say, 2 frames delay in and 90% of the viewer wouldn't notice.😉 In other example, some tv channels in my tv box did have issues. The audio is noticeably ahead of the video (haven't measured it but probably wayyyy more than 0.1s) making it extremely uncomfotrable to watch. If it's other way round I wouldn't even notice it at all.

Yes, this one frame ahead version looked better! And if KZfaq is adding extra delay to your videos, it’s because the format you have uploaded it in is wrong. I had this problem myself years ago, and was also adding an extra frame to my videos. But tried a different h264 codec in Vegas Pro, and found the delay was no longer there. The problem now is only with the KZfaq mobile app. Because when played in a browser, the timing is fine. This is why I watch KZfaq using the safari browser on my iPhone or iPad. What’s even crazier is that even though the KZfaq apps play the videos out of time, their own YT Studio does play them in time. So yeah, it’s a nightmare to deal with. Vimeo on the hand has always been spot on. No problems there.

I uploaded a ProRes file which had no audio delay. I don't think it matters what format you upload from, the KZfaq encoder adds it's own delay regardless

I watched the earlier video and thought it felt weird. Now it makes more sense. But, I like both the one frame ahead and the perfect on-beat cuts. They provide different feels. Prior frame cuts make the new image form completely in my sight on beat. However, the on-beat cut made the old scene cut out exactly at the right time. They provide different feels, but neither feels off. I would use each for their own effect.

There's a lot to be said about the way the brain works. I'm primarily an animator my work involves exploiting the audiences mind through audio visual means. Little tricks like these work because our brain is designed to fill in the blanks and come up with an averaged interpretation of what they are seeing. Animators and VFX artists use tricks like these all the time, in many cases we draw or produce only partial images or distorted images in a frame which when placed properly will cause the audience to see things that never actually exist. Heck even in old school tv certain tricks were employed such as the use of interlaced images. Display a series of lines on one frame, a second set of lines in the next one, and the mind will just see a complete picture.
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 3 жыл бұрын
Actually in the case of interlace, there never were visible lines in that sense. The scanning gun moves so fast and dies out so quickly that you only think you see a full image. The interlaced lines only became visible when we started looking at that signal on a progressive screen.

The speed of sound vs light argument is just insane. Not only because at the distances you normally watch content it doesn't matter, but even if it did then since the speed of sound is lower the audio cut should come first, then video not the other way around.
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 3 жыл бұрын
Well about 5% of my comments on the previous video all echoed that sentiment - it was more that our minds got used to hearing sound later than seeing light, so the edit should reflect that. Problem is it assumes the human brain is some sort of insane chronometer capable of microsecond precision and then automatically adjusts for varying distance differentials. When really the truth is, our brains just sorta guess.

The speed of sound matters, though (yes, in the opposite way here), it's a real problem for large concerts.

You're misreading the situation. Nobody is talking about the delay between your speakers and your ears. We're talking about the delay between sound sources in real life and our ears. Most stuff we hear is between 0 and 200ms away from us (or between 0 and 68 metres). That means that our brain has been trained since early childhood (even ignoring evolution) that sound can never be early but can easily be late. It even expects that. However, we also have been trained to ignore the distance "behind" a TV or movie screen. Watching an explosion that 70 metres away in real life, we expect a 200ms audio delay. But watching an explosion that's 70 metres away from the camera on a TV screen that is 0.7 metres away, we expect...2ms delay.
@FilmmakerIQ
@FilmmakerIQ 3 жыл бұрын
@@HenryLoenwind but now you're talking about explosions which the human animal did not evolve to see... The only example of a large crash from those distances I can think of is lightning and thunder but if you're far enough where you can hear the differential then you're really not in any danger of it... The bigger point is that the human mind does not know what the differential between the sight and sound speed... There is no way of knowing. The only way we know today is because we have a separate millisecond chronometer that we can compare both phenomenons to... such a thing in the brain does not exist. Instead the mind just combines the concepts together if they fall into a relatively close period of time.

You could do more testing to include the average delay IPS computer monitors have and also the much higher average delay led lcd Televisions have due to processing. Also keep in mind there is some delay on most consumer audio systems or pc soundcards. Would love a tutorial on how to sync/calibrate a monitor/tv to the audio interface used!

Wait lol, so this means if i want the frame to change EXACTLY on beat in the YT video, ill need to edit with the audio beat being 1 frame BEFORE the visual media clip (video clip 1 frame ahead)? And if i want to have the youtube video having the visual media clip 1 frame BEFORE the beat of the audio(video clip 1 frame ahead), i will need to edit with my visual media clip and beat of the audio being EXACTLY at the same time as each other? This is such a confusing thing bro haha, love you for doing this though i seriously appreciate it.

One question though, I don't want to switch it from 60 frames to 24, as I found it kind of messes with timings of some things, especially since the footage is at 60. Where do I look to convert the timeline to ms instead of frames?

Having done a lot of music production editing, depending on the style of music, you usually never edit anything percussive ahead of the beat as it's jarring. You can have swing or drag behind to beat for artistic effect. With music video editing I like the visual edit later as the transient portion of the audio hits first with the effect of more perceived punch to the eyes. Great video topic.

3 years later, I stumble on your video on the synching of audio/video challenge with compression. My old stereo has parameters to adjust audio/video delays to ensure sync. Consider a source that supplies analogue audio and hdmi video on separate cables, the stereo would have no way to synch them as they are two separate and independent feeds. The digital to analogue conversion for audio would be done by one device and digital to hdmi by another. The TV itself introduces some latency between start of receiving frame data and it displaying the frame in full. (apparently very important to video gamers). Have to wonder if delays in encoders were purposefully introduced based on average delay of TVs displaying a frame but with TVs getting faster, those legacy delays now causing problems. Also curious if the delay behaviour is "reset" whenever the clip hits a key frame of whether the audio is "anchored" to video a keyframe effectively starting a new stream at that point.

Interesting, after 40 years of film making I never really thought about it. I was partners in a small tv production company and that is the one thing that would drive my partner, who was the director, bonkers. Back in the late 70's early 80's it was nearly impossible to precise about editing picture since machines had to sync and sometimes the sync signal on the tape would cause the machine to make the edit somewhat behind or ahead. Time code mostly fixed that but you could still be a squeak off. If you wanted precise, cut on film and the transfer but that made making deadlines difficult. I learned how to edit video on 2" quad machines with no time code. Punch and pray was the more correct terminology for non-time code editing. Fun times!

I'm a huge fan of the cut on the beat. I understand the appeal of the "frame ahead cut" for the beat, but I prefer the music to be the driving force and kind of 'cause' the cut to exist. The only place I want the cut to happen before the beat would be The Dark Side of the Rainbow.

I like the cut behind the beat. Not because it is correct. I agree that it should be ahead. But I can see using behind the beat as something tense as that slight delay gives an slight uneasy feeling. Beat matching is something which has sent me mental many times, so this will be really useful in making them feel right.

Nice Addendum. My concern with trying to accommodate youTube is what you said - " It may be different next week" So modifications would then throw your video way off down the road when, and if youTube decided to somehow compensate for older videos, and fix it in the new uploads. I see people saying similar things for color and saturation etc., same thing might happen. My opinion is to do it correctly, and not worry about compensating for youTube might be the best plan of attack. I was thinking about it yesterday, and wondered that as we get older, that our brain might be processing the sound and video sync slightly slower than someone younger. When watching your clips on the cuts, some seem to have a slight dark to light dissolve on youTube. That could also be part of their strong compression or a latency in my computer monitor? I have seen that before and when I inspected frame by frame on the original, I couldn't see it. Anyway - extremely interesting topic - I failed to mention the other day, how much I enjoy your videos. Thank you for contributing to the technical education of us. Much Appreciated.

Synchronocity can be a true pain. I once shot a classic concert with choire and orchestra, both located about 15m from each other and like 50m from me. Later I received somebody else's audio recording recorded about 10m from the choire. The in-camera recording was looking badly asynchron already but the crisiness of the new sound recording just made everything worse. In the end I had to hand synchronize to yield something where the movement of the voilinists gave a faint illusion of synchronicity. But it was never perfect, 30fps was already too coarse for that. Add the imperfections of the whole video pipeline and ... Ouch. In the end I was happy enough - but the synchronicity was something artificial, in this very large, verry echoy building, a cuppola dome, synchronicity is not something a view at the camera position would have noticed with his own eyes and ears.
@HenryLoenwind
@HenryLoenwind 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the original setting your brain compensates for the large distance, but when watching the recording, it only compensates for the distance to the monitor. I wonder if our brains would compensate for the distance "behind" the monitor if movies and TV didn't sync the audio to the picture but kept the correct audio delay for the distance between camera and action.
@ralfbaechle

@@HenryLoenwind If for example the brain obtains the distance from the focal distance of the eye that would mean the perceived effect would differ between a monitor and a very large, distant screen such as in a cinema. I think the microphone characteristcs also made a big difference. The additional microphones supressed the building's massive echo much better than human ears or the in-camera microphone both due to characeristics and the location. The building in question btw. is the Dome of St. Blasien, see de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Dom_von_St.Blasien.png for an image of the interior. Choirce and orchestra were located in front rsp to the right of the altar in the centre and I was located on the balcony like 10m above ground behind the camera of that picture.
